I have a Milwaukee power plus 18V that has the same motor so I was able to see how you replaced the brushes. I'm not going to remove the rotor so I won't struggle with the press-fit gear. I do have to find the brushes though. Thanks for posting.

Fantastic tutorial! Do you have any tutorial for a Bosch DDS181A 18volt with a loose chuck? The whole chuck wobbles all the way back to the clutch setting, is it bearings or something else, sure could use a how to.

Is the spindle at the end of the motor that has the gear cog on it tapered so that it holds the cog harder the further you push it down the shaft?
Thanks for sharing, I was drilling a wall with the gsb 1200 li, in hammer mode and the things went wrong , it seems that is a gear box issue, but I think this tool has 2 year guarantee and I hope they could help me

You definitely need a pair of snap ring pliers my friend! Watching you pry that big circlip out was like hearing nails on a chalkboard. Also, I would get a good 6” (150 mm) vise - much better for pressing those small gears onto the motor shaft.

Great stuff. I was searching for something for my worx handsaw which is also smoking like crazy. Cleaned the comutator, checked the stator and the armature and all is good! Sanded the brushes to get them even and its still smoking! The brushes are long enough and the rotor moves freely. I am out of ideas. The only thing left i could do is to replace the brushes. Any other ideas?

excellent work - I Wanted to know the brand and type of grease used in this?
Some observations: (1) the LED wire which you inserted was wrongly done, should have been under the clockwise/anticlockwise switch not over it. check 1:57 timeline. (2) using a rubber mallet or plastic head soft hammer to insert the bearing from the armature would be ideal, and best practice with bearing puller would be ideal. (3) the primary armature shank when inserted in gear box was not greased, even though the gear housing was perfectly greased. best practice would be to apply coating over the armature shank before engaging it with the gear box. This when done ensures proper lubrication overall. if not done this shank will pull grease towards it and make the gear housing gears dry of required grease.

Hi there great video on the restoration of the drill.
I actually bought one and it worked great for an year and suddenly started smoking. I am not a heavy user. Just used it drill holes in walls to hang paintings, to fix up some wooden chairs and hanging up doors.
I am tech savy but, haven't ever fixed a drill before. My Questions are:
1.) Would you recommend someone new to get a sodering iron and the items you show in the video and start opening up the motor?
2.) Should I take it to Bosch's service center and try to get it fixed there ? And if there are any scams I should be aware about do let me know.
3.) What is the cost of repair at a service center generally?
4.) Does anykind of Grease work on the parts or do you need special grease only which I read in the other comments? And what do you use here 19:43 ?

@@radmau Well tried it and it's still smoking and working slow. I just hit it with a WD 40 and a paint brush.

Hello! I have now the same problem! I re-assembled everything almost the way you did! Especially the motor. I checked it with 12V before reassembly. But.... after the reassembly the motor smokes again. So here is the question: WHAT EXACTLY WAS THE REAL PROBLEM WITH YOUR DEVICE? I just cannot believe this was about debries and old greese.
I disassembled AGAIN, cleaned the collector and the brushes again and let motor run on external power for 1 hour withour the gearbox. First it run real slow, but then suddenly rivved up. I guess the collector finally run in along with the brushes. Now working fine.Thank you for the inspiration!
I did not restore the motor on mine. Just put 1-2 droplets of engine oil on the left and right 'bearing' bushings (for the right one you need to remove the transmission) Put 2 droplets and spin at low speed with the motor vertical - don't touch metal with your hand, use glove. No more smell or big flames.

If you heat up the shaft/rotor the rotor comes off you can pull the rotor off easier. No need to hit it with a hammer ...

What liquid fo you use to clean the gears at 5:10 is it household bleach?
I use 1 SUPER CLEAN UP detergent available in my country. I think you can use gasoline instead

Which torx bit size did you use to remove the screws from the casing?
T 10 in my case - Bosch GSR 120 Li. Very likely that the screws are the same.
My gsr 12v-15 screwdriver casing screws are T9

DO NOT do that!
You can pull the gear easily with flame torch gas powered. 20$ at local repair parts store. Heat it up and simply pull it with pliars. Takes 20seconds.
Both my Bosch 12-15V started smoking to hell and had to repair them thoroughly.

Usually such motors are relatively low cost making "swapout" the preferred method of repair. You don't say here what the motor replacement cost is?
