One of my favorite anecdotes somewhat related to this was from Sigrid Schauman. She was stopped by the traffic police in the... fifties, iirc, and asked routinely, if she had had any dealings with police before. Laconically, her answer was, once, when my brother shot Bobrikov.
7:13 I have an endless demand for Finnish metal. Children of Bodom ,Nightwish ,Ensiferum ,Moonsorrow Ambien Dawn, Amorphis ,Turisas,Impaled Nazarene ,kivimetsan druidi And of course Finntroll . That's what I like it's what I need to function Properly
As a Finn I can say that the Civil War of 1918 was pretty bloody and would divide the nation for years to come until WW2 happens.(Winter War and all that) Even today the Civil War is one of the most controversial topics in our history and probably the darkest part of it.
Yes it was a terrible conflict in with so many atrocities were made against POWs and civilians. People of the same nation and culture slaughtering each other over ideology. I've read about the Vyborg massacre... Hate is an unsettling thing.
We in Hungary love all our uralic brothers both in Eesti and Soumi the winter war we tride to send volenters but they get blocked by other powers. Welcome from Hungary or as we call it Magyarország
The union of impossible-to-pronounce languages. Seriously. In my travels across Europe in all other nations I can sort of read the signs and get the hang of where I'm supposed to be going. In Estonia and Hungary? Forget about it. At least in Finland I can read the Swedish signs and somewhat understand just by being a native English speaker and knowing basic German.
Thanks bruh but I love my country and how everything is handled here in the Northern-European countries without corrupted prime ministers and next to non existent social security system. I have a Hungarian friend and what I have heard its unbelievable how the student financial aid is based on how you do in the school instead of being equal to everyone who goes to schools.
Finally! Thank you Indy and the crew! I've waited this ever since you did the video about Sweden 2 years ago (has it been that long?) and said (IIRC) that there'd be a video about Finland as well.
1809 Sweden lost Finland to Russia after Russia attacked sweden. And Finland never was the same and Sweden never forget lossing half of it's country, a third of the population and the status of Finnish as an official language.
Imagine Indy going all excited "Then Finns told Koreans communism and pop music suck, Koreans were so pissed off that they united against the Blue menace." and so on :DDd
Really cool video! This expanded my knowledge quite a bit, even as a Finn. For example I don't recall being taught about Franz Seyn or Adrian Nepenin at school. Everyone knows about Bobrikov and Schauman of course :D
Your channel "The Great War" is an unmatchable masterpeice - great attention to detail, excellent (and unbiased) analyses, superb scholarship, lucid presentations and summations.........and the style of your delivery keeps one deeply interested and invested throughout the video. Well, well done (and -no, I am not related to you.).
A nicely informative video. Part of my background is Finnish. So knowing more about the homeland of my ancestors is quite nice. Thanks for making this video. Great job.
Cool episode. Very informative and edjucating. I personally am finnish and still didn't know most of this :'D. Love the butchering of names aswell. I Find it quite funny.
Hey indy and the team. I am watching you since 1914 and I am really proud to be part of this awesome community ( I am talking about you, Flo.) I am from young democracy called Georgian republic. My country is ancient and used to be influenced by many cultures. After annexation of Georgian principalities and absorbing it by russian empire in 1801-1811 Georgia used to play crucial role in the region. Its capital, Tbilisi was administrative center of south Caucasus and russian empire gained foothold in Caucasian region by it. As we have close proximity to persian and ottoman borders, all wars t With them were fought on our land and using our manpower. Georgia with population of over 2.3 million by 1918 has sent somewhat 250 thousand troops to russian empire on all fronts. After fall of russian empire we had great relations with German empire which helped us to negotiate between ottomans and Russians. These times are really important for my people as it played crucial role in our strife of self determination and nationalism. On may 26th, 1918 democratic republic of Georgia was proclaimed independent. After this till 1921, when Soviet annexed us we had really interesting times. We had many successful wars, we effectively fought off communists and our government consisted mainly of Mensheviks(minority of communist party after split in london in 1904.) Indy, Flo and the team. As you see I am fluent in English and I can easily speak or write in it.(not concerning this text, I wrote it hurry.) I want to do research and send to you my work, but I have some challenges. 1) there are lots of works about ww2 but not ww1, they are scarce. I found a great book which used sources from that times but it is written in georgian and sources and bibliography is either in German, russian or Georgian. Thus book is written by highly educated historian who used approximately 500 sources and even had interviews from whiteness. I really want to contribute my work time and effort in this work but would you trust this sources? Is there any point of me doing this and translating. Btw, I have contacted one of tgeost famous historians in modern Georgia to help me out. What do you think, will you trust my work? And how could it be sent? I am 17 years old and I am planning on studying physics in the usa but I have a great knowledge in history and that's why I loved your channels in the first place. I would be glad if your read the whole thing, idk, lol, thank you. And please, can you contact me?
I know it's outside the scope of the channel, but I've always admired how Finland hammered the Soviets in the Second World War. It's like, please leave us alone, we are neutral, but if you invade we will fight to the bitter end.
Roland Deschain - Kijoitin vahingossa suomen kielen isolla, lål ei voi olla totta... / Jag skrev finska språk med stor bokstav på misstag, lål det kan icke vara så...
Sorry guys, my intention (Toni) in that moment was actually to show more the area of the Finns in general, less the borders. Should have done a more softly border...That's probably what can happen, as we're having a stressful time to get all the episodes ready for christmas and new year as we want to go on vacation and meet our families as well and still give you guys the full tgw-experience ;)
Suomi perkele! Finally this episode I waited for! And I just yesterday found a bunch of mosin-nagant and Mauser casings from an civil war battle near Lahti!
Come to Finland, it's so damn cold that a couple of weeks and you'll know all the bad words. This is due to something you can only experience this far up north called "vitutus" used to express a state of continous anger, grudging acceptance of the conditions and unwavering defiance against mother nature. This in turn is made possible by "sisu" which allows us to stubbornly defy anything that puts us in circumstances that we are not completely satisfied with. But also allows us to survive in said circumstances, with the cost of having to deal with "vitutus" which is usually made apparent by the almost silent mumbling of various swear words and age old curses in an almost chanting manner.
"The almost silent mumbling of various swear words and age old curses in an almost chanting manner" That sounds actually like a fun song, someone should compose it! Although I like cold, I doubt my strength could stomach that level of climate.
Loved the video, but 0:39 the border is incorrect: that was the border only in 1809-1812, until the good Czar Alexander 1st added the Old Finland to the Grand Duchy in 1812. The area was administratively the Viipuri province and had been a part of Finland (Sweden) until Russia annexed it some 90 years before in the Great Northern War. Thus, when the Russians conquered the rest of Finland, it was only logical to unite the "Old Finland" and "New Finland". Anyway, happy to hear more Finland videos coming!
Swedish language was predominant in certain parts of the country, not specifically exclusive to the governing classes. However, upper classes were almost exclusively Swedish speaking.
For once, an unusual classy, informative and objective history-video. Great work. The boundaries of the Grand-Duchy were quite freely drawn on the map, but what the heck.
Please, do something on CGE Mannerheimen and the Jäkkeri. There so much more on this, than just this quick sprint through the years. Especially since Mannerheim had quite some influence on Finnish politics for the coming decades. And before I forget, olka hyvää suomi. I had some of my best in Finnland. Love this country and its people.
And as always, they are exceptions. There was this Finnish composer who only spoke Swedish. This did not prevent him from writing patriotic works that the Russians kept banning. But FINLANDIA kept coming back under new titles, although everyone knew what the original title was and what it meant. Sibelius was not the only Swedish speaking Finnish artists who threw their lot in with the struggle for independence, but I mention him because I love classical music.
Hey thanks for the series can you cover the baltic insependence war or does it go outside the timezone, if so how about an episode on soldiers from baltics like lithuanian rifles or estonian sharpshooters? Thanks with love from lithuania.

As usual a great eposide, from start to Finnish
Stefan T how am I the only one who liked this!? This is gold!
Did however fail to mention Finland's great national heroes like Eisa Peitää and Maski Hallonen
Stefan T... Maybe because there is nothing about them on the web? (at least that I can find, in english)
