I understood the way Atreus acted in the first game. He was a young boy who had very little interaction with his father. In the second game they spent three years together, and they're still having trust issues for some reason? Half the problems in the game happen because they don't really talk to each other. This is the kind of thing that should have been resolved in the three years offscreen, given they don't really interact with anyone else besides the Dwarves, the wolves, and Freya.

Like you said, his father was a stranger and cold to him. He used to sick etc. It made sense. In 2022 he looks sometimes out of place and often brings the quality of the game down when compared to characters like Freya, Mimir and Kratos.

I definitely think the “whatever” section was a response to the community at large about how they all felt about rebellious Atreus. There were a lot of funny reactions to Atreus repeating “whatever” over and over again from Dunkey to JackSepticEye, but your compilation was likely one of the most memorable and easiest to consume, so I think you’re right on that. I also think it serves minor narrative significance as well, with Atreus confronting the mistakes of his past a bit in that segment, and throwing that whatever section in there complemented that narrative pretty well.

Odin and Thor here aren't a 1/1 recreations for their myth versions, but after so much of MCU changing and butchering the myths, this is way more close to the original. Thor was indeed rather build burly, and he does drink a lot, provided he didn't have much of a family drama in the poetic eddas. Odin is jarring to hear, a criticism that is indeed valid, but people also complained he was more Loki than Loki is, but Odin isn't exactly the wise old man people perceive him to be. In the myths, Odin is also a trickster, and just as much of an insane control freak who wants to know everything. As much as Odin is shown as an Aesir King, he is often a tyrant as well, something even JRPGs got right.
Loki is the only odd one out here, being the god of mischief he is bound to cause some dire troubles for each and everyone. The thing is though, actual Loki meant his mischief with a lot of choice and weight to them, and he isn't also completely evil, which certainly sounds like someone who would be a child of another Greek who caused tons of misfortune for those around him. Atreus however often borders on hypocrisy at times and he only covers it up with more lies, that's not to say he didn't have some redeeming qualities or he's very terrible but not only are those moments carried by other characters, some of Atreus' moments just misses the mark sometimes.
    Ironwood is still Atreus Atrocious

Odin sounds like a character from the Sopranos. Thor would be at least likable if he was actually on par with his fathers authority. His family dynamic is just too much. They asking the players to sympathize for too many characters and it doesn’t work.
Ofc Thor tuned out to be a Darth Vader redemption story done horribly. He and his father’s final battle was an immense let down with no scale and zero stakes. Baldur’s battle had scale, stakes, and so much tension.
“Loki” turned out to be a big nothing burger. Oh, he’s shapeshifter? Yeah, well shapeshifter seems like a common trait most gods can do. The term “shapeshifter” is even in the game.
Oh he created the big snake with soul magic? So what, many giants can seemingly do this. There’s not much to “Loki” that only he can do which contributes to his character as unique.
2018 set up a lot of expectations and 2022 it didn’t deliver. I didn’t go into the game theorizing what would happen but only used what they alluded to in the previous game.

    • @Impalingthorn
      @Impalingthorn ปีที่แล้ว +15

My main issue is in how they talk with modern inflections, though their appearances definitely have some inconsistencies. Thor, while burly, is just sorta've... Out of shape?
I do MMA in real life, like, a lot of it. I have a few blackbelts, and the only reason I bring this up is do to how "Viking bod" gets tossed around in reference to how some MMA fighters are built. It is in reference to the large but solid/muscular builds people have. Thor is not one of these builds, he's straight up kinda just fat. Fatter than Fat Thor in the MCU that people hated so much. The design could have worked had they given him more muscle definition. Odin however is just a skinny stick and talks like a mob boss from a TV Show. Someone here referred to the Sopranos and he really does feel like he came straight out of that. He just kinda looks like a "dude" and it's offputting. And I know this isn't the first instance of them deliberately and wildly changing character appearances because Angrboda looks nothing like her mythological self. We're talking about someone who normally gets depicted with blue skin, or sometimes with various other colors.
Ratatoskr is perfect thought. I mean I don't even know if he should be that big, but I will give him a pass on account of the fact that he makes Kratos uncomfortable by disrespecting his personal space.

I find that Atreus can definitely be annoying but I never felt like it detracted from the game to me. It felt somewhat intentional in that, despite the time he spent with Kratos over the last 3 Years, he has inevitably reached his awkward teen phase that everybody goes through. For a lot of people being in that phase tends to harbor a strong desire for independence from parents which would only be fostered by his inherent curiosity and finding out about the opening of Groa's shrines and later on the thought that he is the Champion of the Jotnar. I think its extremely believable for him to get impulsive and rebellious. I also noticed that throughout the game that despite Atreus and Kratos being at odds once in a while they never became nearly as contentious as they were when Atreus had his "godhood" phase in 2018. That shows to me how they have developed their relationship a lot over those 3 years.

Why didn't Zeus and his brothers one day decide to gather together and attack Kratos all at the same time? Why did Kratos fight everyone one by one, was he lucky, was it bad writing, was it fate, was it stupidity from the gods? You little salty bitches will never realise that you are just in the wrong from the start. I'd wager 90% of you hating the new God of War games are not honorable people in real life and you do a lot of projecting in your critiques and showing off your favouritism towards primitive instincts, rage, gore and savagery.

As a person who is quite immersed in Nordic myth and folklore I want to say the representation in the game was actually pretty spot on. Thor is a dumb angry drunk. Odin is a utilitarian that spends his time manipulating his kids towards his ends of preventing Ragnarok. And loki? He's annoying. He makes trouble for no good reason. He complains when he's caught. It's all about right--its just that the games marry it to reality. You can't be the kind of person who can drain a sea of wine and still stand if you aren't a massive alcoholic. The game just follows through on the premise. (Mimir is probably the least accurate.)
On the atreus thing: Atreus doesn't bother me. It's fine that he bothers you. I'm not calling that opinion illegitimate. I don't think the commenters are being accurate when they say he's written to be annoying. He's just the bundle of chaos that kids with anger problems often are. He acts like a 1,000 kids I have taught. You don't have to like him, but I rub against the idea that there was some objectively good way to interpret a child into fiction.

So the takes I can't get with is how they "ignore the first games and pretend like they didn't happen" and "this is the Atreus story" let's address the first one. In 2018 while they don't address as much as I feel they should've they do not detach from the Greek saga as much as you claim. Where the Greek saga really plays it's part is in Ragnarok so you must turn off audio or something when you play I guess? Or don't read? Idk from the top of my head in vanaheim we finally address how kratos killed his family where he states he was tricked by a god to slaughter a temple not knowing his wife and child were in there then kratos states that drove him to vengeance and made him who he was in the Greek saga. (In the parentheses section now I will describe how kratos changed to the man we know now briefly. In the comic kratos trained his rage and how to control it by going into the woods every night and getting brutally mauled by animals and if he got angry and killed them he failed he used this to help control his rage) continuing on, Deimos from the literal PSP game is brought up in dialogue and talked about. In many boat or sled sections kratos recounts tales of his time in Greece a few I remember off the top of my head are him describing killing the fates in GOW2 he also talked about the furies from god of war ascension. When seeing the kelpi kratos even mentions the hippocampus and posiedon. There are a few passing moments too such as references to the Titans and such. For Christ sake the spear is basically a symbol of Greece itself thematically it's the most important thing for his personal arc. The blades are a curse from his past he can't get rid of (source comic for canonical reasons etc) and the axe in my opinion acts as a reminder of his wife an extension of her the spear. The spear is kratos' weapon the first weapon a spartan masters it belongs to him and he tended to prefer it even in a lot of cutscenes it is part of his acceptance of his past. The lady rejects the omega symbol and embraces the Sparta symbol which I feel sums that up perfectly. Ffs the gods are also constantly referencing what he did in Greece too! Right I forgot I gotta defend why this isn't the Atreus game. Okay a story can have multiple characters and focus on multiple characters if you think Atreus is the main character take a look at the gameplay and tell me that. Atreus has like 4 real moves and combos. It's a great system and he's fun as shit to play since he's so swift and fast but he is nowhere near as in depth as kratos system. Story wise it is not the Atreus story the only part I can somewhat stand by is the god awful ironwood I get what they were going for he's never met someone his age chance to be a kid etc as for the Asgard sections those serve to build up odin much more and humanize some of the characters as well like Thor. GOW succeeds in humanizing Thor. While this story is very important for Atreus and has set him in his own journey you fail to see how it begins kratos journey too. Kratos learns many valuable lessons throughout mainly being the classic open your heart to it. When he does he becomes the new all father shown in the shrine at the end and Atreus moves on to find the giants. The Atreus sections are for the people who say he is dumb and is stupid blah blah blah because if all you want is kratos then that's what the old games are for. Clearly Santa Monica loves kratos but they also love these other characters they've made for us like Atreus. So they attempt to make Atreus his own person his arc in my opinion is to get out of the shadow of his father which he does and it's awesome. Should I talk in depth about Freya's arc? Thor's arc? Sindri? BROK? Even fucking Mimir had an entire character arc. Clearly Santa Monica loves the characters and wants us to as well they want some narratives anyways I'm going to sleep now it's the middle of the night

Dude... Everything you just said in this comment is pure 100% facts and I honestly couldn't have said it better myself. The fact that he actually had the nerve to say that they "ignore the first games and pretend like they didn't happen" made me feel baffled beyond belief. Like you said, they do not detach from the Greek saga as much as Mayo likes to claim. Said saga is brought up multiple times throughout 2018 and Ragnarok. The fact that he does not realize this (Or maybe he just deliberately ignores this just to prove his points like he did with Ultrakill's alt-fire weapon cooldowns in his Ultrakill Act 2 "review") is honestly mind-boggling. Then again Mayo probably did turn the audio off from time to time like he did in 2018 because "Atreus so annoying reeee!" Speaking of Atreus? ...Holy crap Mayo's hate boner for Atreus is eyebrow-raising. I mean, yeah. The boy does have moments which aren't exactly his proudest, he does have a bit of a rebellious streak, and he did act pretty shitty when he learned of his godhood for the first time. But I don't think he's as annoying as Mayo makes him out to be. Atreus has clearly learned from his mistakes and him regretting his past behavior proves that. He does grow as a character and matures throughout the story. Him and Kratos escaping the depths of Helheim is a great example of this. Which brings us to the "This is the Atreus story" bit... No. Sure, he's a big part of the story, but so is Kratos. The amount of character development he has shown throughout 2018 and Ragnarok really shows how far Kratos has come from being a killing machine driven by vengeance to someone trying to move on from his past self and change for the better in order to be the best father he can be for his son is SO satisfying to witness. Now, I'll admit, I do agree with some of Mayo's points about Norse era GoW. Namely about 2018's enemy variety and I semi agree with how tight the camera's FOV can feel (Though I was able to adapt to it pretty quickly so not TOO big of a deal. But it would still be nice if there was an FOV adjustment option). But the vast majority of his criticisms overall? ...Yeah, this ain't it, chief. Imo at least.
Oh yeah, almost forgot. The "Or don't read?", part would honestly not surprise me since it's been proven by both Brother Nier 2.0 and Psychonautic Therapy that Mayo is illiterate, unobservant, and downright oblivious. Proof of this is Nier explaining in both his "Under the Mayo doesn't understand Ultrakill" and a bit in his "Under The Mayo's Style Meters Analysis is Extremely Bad" videos about how Mayo fails to understand what kind of game Ultrakill is and Psycho picking apart Mayo's "GOTY" vid on Sifu, as well as Mayo's rant on Sifu's easy mode update. While doing so, Psycho brought up how Sifu's directional throw mechanic somehow went over Mayo's head about 3+ times even though it was EXPLICITLY stated in the OPENING TUTORIAL of the game. If that alone isn't proof enough of how illiterate, unobservant, and oblivious Mayo is, then Idk what is.
*Deeply inhales and then exhales.* Ok! I'm done. Sorry for the rant. It's just that I love how your comment pretty much spoke nothing but facts. With all that said? Imma go check out your content since it looks pretty dope af. \m/

For Germanic (Norse) Pagans and/or people with a deep love/interest for Norse mythology, the mythological aspects and over all character designs of the last 2 games are, to put it mildly, atrocious. Now for people who either don't care about it or take a new age approach to the mythology, it's fair that it doesn't bother them or even makes them more interested in it as being a counter to the more traditional Hollywood/Marvel depictions. However from a purely mythological/historical standpoint it's objectively wrong and bad.
For the first games it was similar, however the butchery became so bad it was one of the reasons I wasn't interested in the new games.

If it wasn't for this plus the 1000 things he did, Kratos and Artreus could've never joined Ragnarok.
The Aesir could've demolished the alliance army.
The fact that Odin was there as Tyr watching their every move only made it worse.
How could anyone in his right mind expect Atreus to put on his mask in the midst of battle like he did, after what he did?
    It's practically insane.

It's funny that a character who is credited for being an "expert" manipulator and strategic thinker can not develop enough patience to not unnecessarily kill an annoying drawf he only meets a few moments that puts all his work to jeopardy.
Like Zeus is a much better manipulator and schemer than Odin is ironically, as he hid as the gravedigger without ever exposing himself. He successfully tricks Kratos into giving his power away to render him mortal so that Kratos is left weak. In the end, Zeus ACTUALLY succeeds in his plan to kill Kratos, who is only saved due to Gaia.

People are fucking weird where you can't have both praises AND negatives on something at the same time. Clementine from The Walking Dead is another child character from a game who isn't annoying. And yea, I had a hard time believing this is the personality of someone who was raised by Kratos. But above all else, Atreus is terrible because his modern way of speaking broke my immersion. Most everyone else still *feels* like they are from an ancient/fantasy world, although in the sequel, more and more characters talk with modern vernacular. It's a lazy sloppy, dialogue writing, and everyone responsible should take notes from A Plague Tale on how to make characters sound modern without feeling like they sound out of place and time.

  • @Heby_cz

4:09 that's because Kratos didn't raise Atreus, Faye did. The whole part in the light of Alfheim in gow 2018 is about that and that part is kind of important, it's not just some throwaway line. Atreus literally says "He always leaves. He's never here. He doesn't want me and he never will. I don't know him and he doesn't know me. Doesn't seem to want to." in that "vision" or what ever you want to call it.

@@melancholyman369 Yeah Asgard was a MASSIVE disappointment. I mean, I do like the wooden cabins, and taverns. But it felt to small scale, like a small mortal village, not a place with gods. I wanted a HUGE collection of these, with stone castles mixed throughout, an old city kind of thing. I like the great lodge, and how Odin built it himself. But honestly, I wish that was like, his personal one. For him and his family and guests. Maybe even having it be the very first building in Asgard, hence why Odin keeps it simple, it’s his. But in front of that should’ve been a grand and luxurious one. And also I agree, the warriors looked terrible. Well the main ones did. Most were boring to fight. So much for Asgard’s finest. The captains were cool though.
As for Thor, I’m…mixed. I’m okay with the design, but I wish he wore armor and looked more dignified. Like in 2018. Even if he was still as fat, the armor he had would go a long way to fixing the design.
