Frank is the little brother that Karl never had. This is Karl's second chance to do the right thing and protect his little brother's future, very powerful.
this is slowly becoming one of my favorite films of all time, I don't understand why its hitting me so hard, now that I am older, but it is...probably going to watch it again tonight
Justin, I hear you and I think that I've gone to love it more the older I've gotten too. Karl's character is so simple and yet so pure and honest, he's not smart in the typical sense but he knows people and he knows what he has to do to protect the boy that he has grown to love as his best friend.
JayDogTitan 1464 I agree that Karl likely thinks that would be the case, but I’d hope that Frank and his mother would be regular visitors at the “nervous hospital” Karl returns to.
That's the way it should have ended. with Karl having a visit from Frank and Linda, and the boy showing his homework from school to Karl, who at last would now have a family.
@@FretlessMayhem Sadly, it wouldn't surprise me if Frank's mom blamed Karl for killing Doyle and depriving her of a boyfriend. Obviously something was wrong with her if she was with Doyle in the first place, and even letting him move in.
I think its because ,when you've lost someone ,you keep it inside[like Karl does] this is so unselfish, and innocent ,the boy plays his part ,so well, all the pain is buried in Karl,so to show ,even slight emotion ,is moving.
Chris Haven M.S. Karl tells his father that he understands a good deal of the Bible. I think Karl knew he was sacrificing his life for Frank and his mother. I believe Karl thinks that either Doyle will eventually kill them both, or Frank will eventually kill Doyle, with all their lives ruined either way. So, Karl does it himself, sacrificing his freedom for the lives and happiness of those whom cared for and about him.
Really though, he's mom should have been the one to break things off with Doyle. Otherwise I'm afraid she'll just end up with another Doyle, putting Frank back into the same position.
The beauty of this scene is take it is all done in *ONE TAKE*. The camera never moves or cuts or flashes - it is just there, very static. This has such an amazing effect of us, as viewers - we are watching this conversation unfold without any real editorial manipulation. This is why it feels so real and human. It is like we are simply watching this tender moment as it happens.
I agree. Modern directors really need to learn to lock their cameras down during dialog scenes. Let the actors act and let the audience take in what's going on.
I’m 30 and my dad was never close to me or involved in my life. I cry every time I see this scene. The sheer impact of a father figure to a young boy is so valuable. I don’t have kids yet but when I do I’ll do everything my Dad didn’t do with me.
Sheesh, possibly one of the greatest films about friendship I ever saw. This scene had me in bits. The film did win an Oscar btw - for best screenplay.
That this movie lost the Best Picture award to....gyah....THE ENGLISH PATIENT was when I first started seeing that the fix was in. SLING BLADE is a near-perfect film.
I read that after filming this part, when Karl looked back at Frank (they omitted that part), Billy Bob said he got very emotional and was crying when he walked out of the scene.

the mark of a masterpiece is in the rewatch. you see those formerly unnoticed nuances build to the final conclusion knowing all along how it ends but watching it with all new appriciation for the journey
For what? If you watched the movie, the mom was clearly not going to admit he beat her and press charges. That would have just made the beatings worse. Killing Doyle was the only solution
TheWholeSystemisFckd He could've been given breatherlizer tests to see how drunk he might've been and Carl could've said he might've drank which would be proven by the test and eventually outvote the bum.
If only life worked like that, friend. Just proving someone was drunk doesn't justify killing them. Never mind the guy that killed him being, what the state deems, mentally handicapped with passed convictions of killing people. Unfortunately, the justice system just doesn't work like we want it to. That's why Carl's actions make him a martyr. The 2 choices were to leave it alone, or kill him and sacrifice his freedom for the rest of his life
Karl is my favorite character of any character I've seen in any movie I've seen in my entire life. He is pure, kind, genuine, and just good in every way. I love him very much. He is a cherished character even though he is fictional. He has been satirized more times than I can count and with good reason...but the teasing is never vicious. He is Americana. If he were a real person, I would want very much to have him as my friend.
I will never forget seeing this the first time in the theater. I already loved the film, but then THIS SCENE hits, and I remember vividly people SOBBING in that theater. I brought 2 other people to see it later on, then saw it two more times in the theater on my own. I'm a film freak but I'd never gone to see a movie more times in the theater, and haven't since.
This movie aside from being one of the best stories ever told, has one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard. It’s so simple but the way they used it so freely and so raw throughout the scenes brings out so much emotion.
I always come back to this film. I feel like Karl and this boy are only sensible people I have met. This world has so much evil and apathy. But, these two have precious souls. It’s a true Masterpiece.
@Evan Goch, it's almost certain that Liza Rossellini meant she met them figuratively, not literally, and that does not qualify her for the nervous hospital.
This is such a wonderful film. With the perceived simpleness of Karl, that we come to find out he understands exactly how things need to be for his new friend. Billy Bob may be a little out there, but this is like a top 5 movie of all time. A thoughtful, heartfelt masterpiece.
I swear this is the greatest film of all time. It's an emotional roller coaster. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll get pissed off. It's amazing. The cast of actors were beyond incredible. Dwight Yoakam deserved on Oscar or something for his performance. John Ritter stole the show too. What an actor.
1:50.....Karl's voice had a slight crack in that "allright then." He had trouble showing emotions outwardly, but he knew he wouldn't see Frank anymore and it broke his heart.
I just watched it today. I feel like this is one of those movies that haunts you for a few days after you watch it. And most of the film was pretty much long takes after long takes. Really well done. Everyone did a great job, but it takes a genius to write, direct and play in a film. (and be this good in all three of those things) And such a unique character as well.

Good pointing that out
frank became karls little brother that died at birth

That line destroys me every single time. I think it hit John Ritter in a way he never expected. His reaction to it is pure un rehearsed emotion.
Love that line. It’ll make a grown man cry.

It's a mighty big place as he actually worded it & yes I cried hearing that line , it hit me real deep personally 😢

I think Karl felt more “freedom “ being locked up. The world was too big and complicated. In my mind, killing Doyle was good for both he and Frank.
Tough
Not really,he just murdered some mother's son.

"You will be happy".
It takes Karl a lot to guarantee that for a friend.
I lose it at this part, when he tells him he loves him. I just lose it, what a touching movie
