Carl first offers to cut the grass but then confronts his dad about how he was treated. I think Billy Bob and a stroke of genius inspiration on this film. I think it's a once in a lifetime thing . I don't know if he will reach this high again. But his acting in other films is quite excellent ( especially A SIMPLE PLAN) so maybe he doesn't have to. I'm from the south and the character Carl is one the only characters in a movie that actually uses the idiom and dialect my relatives did
Tommy, you are so RIGHT! This movie is a masterpiece in movie making. ALL of the dialogue is spot on. Especially that of the character Doyle Hardgroves. Men who work hard feel entitled to special treatment from every one around them. When it comes to women, they are monsters because they feel the women are the reason they HAVE to work so hard. I've worked hard. But I never treated my wife that way or expected anything special from her. Yep, A Simple Plan was a good idea, but a bad script. People want to see people who have good fortune take it to the limit because it's drug money . The lottery, so to speak.
Well yea , I wonder if that's what would have really happened if three guys found all that money. But I do think the script is well done in terms of portraying how normal people can do evil things when a new or unfamiliar force or temptation in thrust upon them.
How much more can you ask of a man then to step up to everything that ever hurt him and is afraid of. This is such a beautifully simple moment of a man proving his worthiness of goodness. Regardless of what he is, choosing what he believes is right and standing up to his demons.....Awesome

My mom watched this a lot when I was a kid and for some reason one time she was watching the scene started skipping and looping. It just kept saying "I'm ya boy --- aint got no boy" like 20 times before it was fixed. We all laughed so hard.
Carl would’ve been a better caretaker of his brother than his parents ever would. It shows despite how much they hurt Carl and made him did what he did, he still is compassionate to others, especially smaller folks.

My dad was always a bit of a asshole, but that thing Duvall does with his mouth at 1:42 is a dead ringer for the shit he did when he got physically frail and started slipping upstairs. Just little snarky facial expressions and snide remarks constantly.

Two amazing actors together. Thornton’s attention to arranging the detail on this set stood out to me. I found the religious artifacts interesting and am unsure of Thornton’s meaning but the detail in this scene really speaks about the emptiness that many people chose for themselves as their lives end.
Billy Bob Thornton is a rare actor on par with the likes of genius Daniel Day Lewis!! Many actors are cast because their natural attributes fit the role well and/or they adjust accents or mannerisms some… but this level of talent is next level! Thornton should’ve used a ghost name to see if anyone even recognized him!

@@u.p.woodtick3296 The Apostle. I grew up in that world, though a different part of the country. My mom wouldn't watch that movie. I'm sure she thought it would be too close to home, which it would have been. Too bad, though. It might have led to a good conversation. I thought Duvall was very respectful and balanced in his portrait of those individuals and the community.
He surrounds himself with divine art, but rejects his son. Has he no concern for The One who has the power to reject him?

That may be the original score by Daniel Lanois. He nailed it with the music in this movie. Slingblade is bound to be a classic for so many reasons, and Lanois' music is a major part of it.

I wish this movie was available on streaming or was on TV sometimes. It’s only available by dvd and those are hard to come by.

Nobody really mentions how the scene starts with Christian iconography behind his father and nothing behind Carl. But at 48 seconds in, the icons of Christ appear behind Carl, and at 1:14 behind his father are empty bottles of alcohol.
When Carl gets that look in his eye, hide the cutlery. Also, I'll be 1/2 of all the people looking at this clip won't know what that thing is at Robert Duvall's right foot, that pot. It's called a SLOP JAR. It's used for cold winter nights to take a shit.

Two amazing actors together. Thornton’s attention to arranging the detail on this set stood out to me. I found the religious artifacts interesting and am unsure of Thornton’s meaning but the detail in this scene really speaks about the emptiness that many people chose for themselves as their lives end.
Billy Bob Thornton is a rare actor on par with the likes of genius Daniel Day Lewis!! Many actors are cast because their natural attributes fit the role well and/or they adjust accents or mannerisms some… but this level of talent is next level! Thornton should’ve used a ghost name to see if anyone even recognized him!

Sling Blade wasn't even nominated for a best picture Oscar. The winner for '96 was "The English Patient", a torturous 3 hours, but a nice safe movie to honor.
