I always thought that people were talking INTO the tube
I had no idea how it really worked either until I got one. Best way to look at it, it's like an acoustic guitar. The strings vibrate and the sound goes into the sound hole and then the guitar amplifies the sound. With a talk box, the synthesizer is (equivalent) to the strings and the sound hole is your mouth, but unlike an acoustic guitar, you can shape each note with your mouth into words in a song.

Same story with me but I saw a TH-camr do a over of "No Diggity" on the talk box like 9 years ago on youtube and fell in love. I didnt know how it worked for a long time until I got one a few years ago. That dude from tiktok is pretty cool though 🔥

Exactly, you have pronounce the "C"s, "K"s, "H"s "F"s "SH"s, "CH"s, "T"s, "S"s and "X"s in order to get the words to sound correctly. Like in the word "happy" you have to make a "Hhh" sound and then mouth the word "-appy". Daft Punk????? No mention of Daft Punk??? I feel like they’re the most iconic of the talk box users
I'm a huge Daft Punk fan and I do mention them in most of my talk box videos! I do believe their go to instruments for vocals are the talk box and a vocoder.
When I think of a talk box the first person that comes to mind is Roger Troutman from the 80's - 90's but there has been many great talk box players before him as well. When I think of modern talk box musicians I think of Daft Punk and Mr. Talk Box. Theres a lot of TH-cam talk box musicians that are a big inspiration to me as well 🔥🔥🔥

A talk box is not a midi Instrument, you record the audio on a talk box the same way you record a person singing because a talk box is acoustic sound coming from your mouth, not a digital signal. But with that said, a talk box is super easy to set up and will be super fun to use in the studio!

So this is basically working similar to a vocoder, very interesting!

Agreed! They are not exactly the same but I think the concept of how they both work share similar physics. You can get the same result by putting the speaker on your phone up to your mouth while its playing a song. You can kind of mouth the words like a talk box that way.

Is the talk box useful for live music?
Definitely! many people don't know what a talk box is so seeing it played live would be a fun experience for the audience.
how versatile will it be if i plug my electric bass into it.
It will work the same way as an electric guitar but you might want to play higher on the fretboard. A regular electric guitar would be ideal but a bass would work too. Add some effect petals and you'll have a blast!

so normally we generate sound pressure with our lungs and we expel it out and then we enunciate with our face/tongue/etc, and the final sound comes out of our mouth. we can catch the sound with a mike and direct it to an amp. we all know this..
now...
with the talk box we know the sound pressure goes in your mouth. you mouth the words with your face/tongue/whatever. my question is then... does the final sound come out of your mouth (then into microphone then amp)? or does the final sound just come out of the amp and nothing comes out of your mouth besides air?
There's a reasonably modern song in my head that sounds like it might use the Talkbox - it's very repetitive, and I think has the lyrics "whirl around, round and round...." - anyone know the name of it? I've been aware of the Vocoder for decades, but only just discovered the Talkbox - very interesting!

But i dont get how sound can travel down the tube , into the mouth and out to the mic, .. Cause i thought when something makes a sound, the sound waves just radiate out everywhere,, like a stone thrown onto a pond.. but apparently the talk box is able to channel the sounds waves so specifically into the tube only, and i dont hear any of the regular synthesizer sounds
Great questions! Yes there is a small speaker enclosed inside of the talk box itself. When the synthesizer send a signal to the the talk box it comes out of the speaker. Generally the speaker would radiate the sound everywhere but since it is enclosed in a metal box the sound waves have no where to go except the path of least resistance which is through the tube.
Do you think this would work with somebody that has Lou Gehrig's disease AKA A.L.S? This person has had a Tracheostomy procedure done on him. He cannot talk anymore. Please let me know & thank you so much for your support.

So a talk box has no input for the "processed sound"! What we hear is the sound coming from the mouth and in the mike, right?
A talk box has an input for the synthesizer signal goin into the talk box, it also has a output for bypass reasons if you’re using a guitar and want to bypass the talk box once your done using it.
And yes you are right, there is no output for processed sound because the sound is essentially acoustic, you would record someone playing a talk box the same way you would record an acoustic instrument or a vocal track.

Hey man! Cool content for a video! But, I was losing interest pretty quickly. I feel like you could have shown talkbox examples instead of listing/talking about it. Up until at least 1:43 I will would have no idea what a talk box even sounds like. Also, a little more excitement in your voice would be nice haha. It's hard for me to be excited about something if you don't seem excited about it.

Can you use just a regular keyboard?
Technically yes but it wont give you the same sound. A synthesizer with a saw wave is the most common used way of getting a talk box style sound.
You said, that "Dogs" from Pink Floyd was done with the Talkbox also. I think you're wrong, I believe they used a Vocoder back then...

Yes, the sound from coming out of your mouth will be the same note that you play on the keyboard.
