@Michael Scofield Having a bad teacher is still better than no teacher at all. And, studies have shown, that well paid teachers tend to be better teachers, because they can care about teaching instead of caring about how they're going to pay their mortgage.

No. There aren't enough teachers in the UK because the government refuse to pay them enough and its such a stressful job. Schools across the country are having to cut budgets making the job harder as resources are cut and class sizes are having to increase. I read an article and 34% of teachers plan on leaving in the next 3 years. They work 50 hours a week on average.
Teachers don't earn a lot for the amount of work they have to do not only while they are working, but to even get the job. They definitely need more money for what they do, being a teacher is one of the lowest paying jobs and it should definitely not be that way
Michael Wade I Think That's pretty much universal. I consider my country (Denmark) a pretty great country. Yet we're about to shut the entire country down (yes, You read correctly) because They are unwilling to give teachers a fair work enviroment.
In the U.K. that’s the same. You are either terrified of your teacher, best mates, or they get mercilessly bullied by the students. We had a maths teacher who got called Princess Kevin the whole year and another teacher who got locked out of her class room (we have auto doors and she left the key in the room) so this boy took the chance to go through her bag and put her stuff in the bin.
Is that it? You sound like you went to a snowflake school looool. What pussy would be hurt being called "Princess Kevin" There's way worse examples than that. it's not a good thing to abuse teachers but whether we like it or not the disrespect happens everywhere in the world.
Yeah but if you subtract the amount Americans pay for healthcare ut affects the wage. (I'm English so i don't know how much it costs)(hopefully not too much)
In the USA virtually every school district pays for health insurance for their employees. While it varies by district, in general, American school districts tend to provide above average health insurance benefits for their employees relative to the insurance plans most private employers offer for people in a similar pay range. Also worth noting that school districts are some of the last employers in the country that still provide true pensions for their employees rather than 401(k) savings plans, though many states are starting to scale back how generous those pensions are.
I would like to add in the UK, many teachers get a relief in their huge work loads due to GCSEs ending 75% into the school year. Bear in mind that all secondary teachers care about is their GCSE students and A Level students, their workload drops by about 46%, according to a study done in my old school.
We have teachers who teach from 7am-5pm from Christmas until their GCSE exam. That includes break and lunch. They also teach on weekends close to exam period. Those last few weeks don’t make up for all that work imo.
Kiwi Kiwi very true, which is probably the cause of the lack of teachers. However, a teaching job almost always requires a lot of work. Marking and such just takes up far too much time, for example, any teacher with like a class per year has to do about 180 sets of marking in like a week.
There have been multiple occasions where teachers have dipped into their own pockets at my school (UK). Last week English teacher bought Romeo and Juliet for us because we had a cover lesson in the maths block and he couldn't play the film as there were no DVD players in maths so he used Amazon instead. Furthermore, apparently, a lot of departments have to fundraise as they do not get enough of a budget from the school so the teachers actually pay their own money towards being able to teach the students with quality supplies. I respect my teachers and couldn't thank them more for putting in all the hours and effort they do towards us, and we should be grateful, wherever in the world you are. Don't just take the mick out of your teachers when you don't know what they go through to look after you and ensure your future!
I'm from America, and I agree with you. The UK is made up of more than one country, and I think it's disrespectful to the other countries when people refer to the UK as just England. I don't know if maybe it's because their royal family is more well known and famous (Princess Diana was pretty much the most famous woman in the world), but I don't think it's right that people see them as the only country in the UK.
I’m from England and tbh I feel guilty like ik it’s not my fault but 😂 (also as soon as I read “Wales” my brain automatically started reading ur comment in a welsh accent 😂)

In the US, teachers have to avoid their students with guns - in the UK school shootings are not a problem. So, what was that about how the UK treat tantrums badly? Recent news suggest otherwise.
I'm Scottish and I'm pissed that it isn't possible to get an SNP representative as Prime Minister due to there not being enough Scottish seats in parliament
I've taught primary education in both the US and UK. This video missed almost everything that is comparable and different. Some of the biggest differences I noticed were the longer English schhol year and the type and use of curriculum materials. In the UK we were given National Curriculum skills and concepts as guides (just policy documents) for what to cover with students across 11 subject areas. In the US we had a school book for most curriculum areas. For instance the school district would expect all teachers to teach from one main history book and the students would work from a complementary workbook. The same for science, math, geography, etc. In the UK a teacher would be given 1 ream of paper per term for copies. Giving worksheets to students was not considered appropriate teaching. In the US most student work was done with worksheets. In the UK teachers had to create their own resources and develop their own lessons and activities. Schools traditionally did not teach to scheme books which meant teacher workload in the UK was much higher. As far as pay goes, in the US it varies greatly. In wealthy states and with incentives for further education, teachers can make over $70,000/year. Equivalent schools in the UK make £40,000 with a larger workload and a much longer school year.
Soumik Naskar In DMV and most state it's not a thing for teachers, and that been happening for teachers in Alabama and some parts of the south I heared

I’m a high school teacher and the instant they tried messing with me, I shut it down right there. It took time, but I earned my students respect through consistency and hard work. I don’t coddle my students, I make their work relevant, and tell them that world outside of school is a more unforgiving place.
...with the gun. The person pulling the trigger kills...with the gun. You are part of the problem. Go fuck yourself
Plump: It was never an honor system. We've had armed police in schools since Columbine. That's not a problem because those people are trained professionals. As for "mentality" arguments: What do you call a shooter without a gun? Something else. What do you call a mentally unstable person without a gun? Not a shooter. Oh, and can you tell me ONE bill or law to expand access to mental healthcare that the republicans have proposed after ANY of these shootings? Just one? No? Then go fuck yourself with your precious precious gun.
Plump: I can vote for candidates that support gun control. I can continue to speak up against ammosexuals. I can continue to donate to candidates and organizations that are pro human/anti gun. And, of course, I can continue to promote and educate on the benefits of a gun free society. As for armed staff, they're obviously a good idea as a last line of defense. Unfortunately, there is currently no first, second, or third line of defense. Which means gun control laws, mandatory training, national registry, banning private sales, harsher punishments, and comprehensive background checks to prevent the armed police staff from needing to be used. I'm not scared of a gun in the hands of a trained professional. I grew up in the military surrounded by the best trained gunmen and women in the world. A gun in the hands of an untrained idiot or someone not in full control of their faculties scares the living hell out of everyone with two brain cells to rub together and there ought to be a law. You dare to say I don't care about kids? Coming from someone who wants to do nothing to protect them or any of the thousands of adults who get shot in America every year, that means exactly dick. Oh, and you didn't answer my question. One bill or law to expand access to mental health care? One? Anything? No? Then take your gun, and use it to go fuck yourself. Preferably while loaded.
Hey i really love your videos and find them very informative and intresting. It has also helped me in school in leatning thing that i didnt really understand. Thanks.
I’m an ESL teacher from Canada. I’ve been living abroad for a few years but I’ll be returning to Canada soon to get my Bachelor of Education (2 years, not 4.) English and American teaching salaries are SOOOOO low. In my home province, the minimum salary for a new elementary school teacher is around $44,000 before tax. After 10 years it’s about $86,000 before tax. In Ontario, Alberta, and Nova Scotia, salaries are close to $100,000 before tax after 10 years.
I can confirm the shortage of teachers in the U.K. there are even adverts on TV encouraging people to train to be a teacher. They offer about 18K or something if you choose to train I’m pretty sure but I don’t really know.
Very thankful for where I go to school. None of these things are really an issue at my school. Most of my teachers have been there for 15+ years so they make around 115k as thats the max salary in my district.
Great video, infact my sister in law is an American teacher who is now teaching in the UK. I will send her the link. But going off what she said in the past its very much the same, The big difference seems to be in the attitude of parents. In America she found there was alot more stress around the parents coming to the school and kicking off about this or that, while in general in the UK the parents are alot more relaxed and hands off!.
Same for the UK. He only compared US to England but Scotland also has devolved powers much like a state in the US would. Completely different system with different curriculum. Scotland being one of the most devolved countries that is in a union in the world meaning it has high control over things like healthcare, education policing and taxing and comparing one part of the UK doesn't translate well for the entire union.
There is no shortage of people qualified to become teachers. The only shortage that exists are people who are willing to work under an educational system that values an arbitrary scores on a standardized tests over respecting individual needs. The argument is bunk. It's about working conditions, respect, and funding levels.
Im a British student but when a American teaches us i get so happy because they're so kind and I love the accent but British teachers are annoying and strict like all my teachers (only some British teachers are nice) 😝 But UK schools are safer due to local police's and gates.
Lizza who? You like the American accent? Well that's a first wait was is southern, Philly, or a Boston accent that'd make since but never met someone who though the normal US accent was special or cool
This was so interesting. I am a teacher in Canada. After 11 years of experience we get paid $99,000/year. I am shocked to see how little teachers in these countries make in comparison.
Juan Hall ikr youtubers get paid millions for clickbaiting not every one because editing takes 9 to 12 hours and there are good TH-cam's who care for their fans and aren't money wanting fucks
As a non-teacher, the idea of having to buy the equipment needed to do my job, unless I was self-employed, is absurd. You wouldn't expect an office worker to supply the stationary and IT equipment, you wouldn't expect a doctor to supply the medication and medical equipment, so why is it different for teachers?
I was thinking about teaching after I graduated college and needed a job but I decided not to do it. The pay is not worth all that stress unless teaching is your passion and you want the benefits. But you gotta pay for your own classroom supplies and be around a bunch of bad ass kids for 8 hours. Teachers do not get paid enough for all the crap they gotta put up with. Hell no! 🙅🚫
Is that student dropout rates? In the U.K. students cannot drop out until 18 unless they can secure employment in which case it's 16. Doesn't matter if they have the mental age of an 8 year old. They still have to attend some form of education or parents will be fined.
Undoubted Chicken where did you get your information from? You only have to study until you’re 18 and you can dropout after. Anyways, as if anyone even follows that law...

You missed that in the UK, schools have A LOT more and I do mean A LOT more holidays than the US. Every Few weeks in fact..... All Paid I might add. What's more the top teacher in the UK can be considered the head of a subject area in a articular school school and they can make up and above £50,000 (nearly $70,000). Now if you're a Headteacher/Principal or part of the Senior Leadership your salary can be £75,000-£100,000+ ... add on top our free healthcare. You be the judge.
In the US the expense of getting a collage degree (often a Master's) and then earning less than a cab driver just isn't feasible. If we want good teachers that can stay with the profession, we need to make teaching a financially desirable career choice.
Where I live teachers work 9 hours and students go to school for 7 hours. Teachers don't pay for school supplies, we buy our own, it teaches us to be independant.
Account That is still "free" healthcare, I know that healthcare is a big part of Philip Hammond's budget but you do not have to "pay as you consume". The NHS is free for all even those who don't pay taxes
It is harder to become a doctor than a teacher. Also a lower 10 percentile teacher will make you miserable for about an hour. A lower 10% Open Spine surgeon will make sure you never walk again. Teachers should be paid more, but the stakes for an individual bad profesional are much higher for a doctor. Of course, if your teacher sexually abuses you, than you got yourself a permanent case of psycological trauma, which is a pretty high stake. Cheers, Null.
Scotland has it's own parliament and a different education system, please rename this to "US teachers vs English teachers", a lot of English and Scottish things are the same but education is really different.
The issue with the crisis in the uk is that the shortage in staff means bigger classes which means the teachers can’t control the children and that puts off many new teachers. I have a friend who studied to be a teacher but ended up being placed in the ruffest school around with kids throwing chairs and weapons at her. The thing is it’s a cycle that is going to continue until kids can be controlled in big numbers (which isn’t going to happen) I am a student who has just got out of school and I can say that most of my teachers were so fed up they didn’t even teach well.
You made the UK teachers to look like they are worst than the US: working more, payed less, having too much children to teach and UK is lacking of teachers. Thanks a lot!
ScienceTastic that's the truth. Teachers are paid little here. For all the teachers looking here, you better start looking into private tutoring. My mum is paying £60 for a 90 minute session of English tutoring. That's pretty good. I can definitely think of many teachers in my school who are good enough to charge even more. It's volatile, but will be better in the long run.
Okay so I'm not even mad about him referring to the UK as just England and forgetting about my country cause I'm so use to it at this point. What I'm angry about is that they didn't even put my country on the screen when showing "All" of the UK- 2:08
Here in the UK, the lack of teachers has really taken a toll on my school. My textiles teacher has to teach not only her specific subject, but food tech and geography too. The students don’t help the situation either. We are all little savages. 🤷♀️

I don't understand how the teaching profession can pay so low. As a student who is a TA, I can already see that real teacher workloads are insanely high and some supplies come out of pocket. I don't understand how we treat teachers so poorly when they provide society so much.
Hamzah Patel It's better that way because it's easier to concentrate on the subject I used to share my desk with my friend and he was a pain in the ass
Hamzah Patel I am assuming you're from India based on your name? Even in India students sit on individual desks. It depends on which school you're going to. I know cause I have attended 5 different schools.
We aren't always sometimes we have tables and such it depends on the size of the room and the teacher I have a class with long tables, and have had at least one for most of my school time
Interesting how neither country seems to acknowledge that we'd get better quality teachers if we paid them more. An average teaching salary in a decent small city should be approximately $60,000. Also, teachers and school systems should be held accountable if schools have a high student failure rate. Lastly, we need a national computerized test we can use to evaluate students. Not a paper test that teachers have access to so that they can help their students cheat so that they will look better (this was on the news frequently a few years ago). In short, we need to pay our teachers well but hold them accountable if the failure rate is high.
Gregory Chiadika I don’t like computerized tests. I’m in a Highschool of around 600-800 kids and we have about 150 computers. We have about 1 computer being broken every day and many people actually volunteer after school to help fix them. The WiFi is terrible so it takes 15 mins to open, and there’s no telling on which program they would be using to take the tests. Yes there are standardized tests like the ACT or the SAT or the like but those are state mandated and worked tests that have the same questions. What u are suggesting is that a teacher is to make a computer program that can make tests unique to the subject and what they learned and expecting it to go well on devices that barely work? No offense my friend, u seem like a very smart person, but that is a bad idea at this time.
Gregory Chiadika and that “national evaluation test” yeah we have that already. It is called the ACT. It already exists and students in the US take it their Junior year.
As a teacher, I can tell you, a teacher's salary is not equivalent to quality of teacher. If the profession paid more, it doesn't mean all the smart people will move into teaching. The job itself, regardless of pay, will drive people out through attrition. Teachers never quit because of salary. They quit because of the bad kids, the lack of supplies, the unsupportive administration and parents, and the demand on your mental stability.
Listen you can’t hold teachers accountable for bad results and it already happens away a school can be in a deprived area at the end of the day it’s the kids not the teachers (in most cases)
This video is propaganda! If you think teachers clock out and forget about the school, students, parents, and don't do anything related to their work after school weekend and summers you'd better think again. Most people don't consider this but teachers also do before and after school tutorial sessions that could be considered to be a second job.
I am a teacher in Houston, TX. You're right, average national salary sucks in both countries. But in some states you get paid more. Houston teachers get paid average $50K starting, without stipends such as advanced degrees, cerifications, tests, coaching positions, etc. Similar in Austin or San Antonio. Then again you must account for the cost of living and transportation. In Houston cost of living is not real expensive unless you live near downtown area, but you suffer for lots of driving if you have a decent home (some teachers, by themselves or with their spouses can get homes like up to $500K+ with mortgage), but 30mi away from your job. Austin is not so forgiving because real estate and the job sector is booming. Hence higher real estate. So many environmental factors for money. But if you can deal with the living standard, especially alone as a teacher, kudos to you.

Oh man, I can already tell this video is going to make me sick. There's nowhere near the appropriate level of respect for teachers in America.
Michael Wade I Think That's pretty much universal. I consider my country (Denmark) a pretty great country. Yet we're about to shut the entire country down (yes, You read correctly) because They are unwilling to give teachers a fair work enviroment.
Katrine Petersen lol same for my country
In the U.K. that’s the same.
In the U.S shutting down the country is a national pass-time.
Uk pound is worth more than a US dollar so the payment of teachers in both countries will be similar

you forgot to mention that in UK teachers dont have to worry about health care as they have single payer health care system.
Yeah but if you subtract the amount Americans pay for healthcare ut affects the wage. (I'm English so i don't know how much it costs)(hopefully not too much)
as an American our tax dollars goes towards wars and spacial interests . gladly most americans would pay extra taxes to cover health care.
SxKushxS Yes but that tax is much less than what Americans pay for healthcare plans let alone when an emergency happens
This video lacks context. What do teachers have to pay for (or not) with their salary? What is the cost of living? Etc.

I think it's really down to the teacher go be honest
Really annoying how they say it's the UK but it's really only England.
We have teachers who teach from 7am-5pm from Christmas until their GCSE exam. That includes break and lunch. They also teach on weekends close to exam period. Those last few weeks don’t make up for all that work imo.
Shayron1989 they stopped doing it this year
Kiwi Kiwi very true, which is probably the cause of the lack of teachers.

Don't just take the mick out of your teachers when you don't know what they go through to look after you and ensure your future!
its not just flipping England as I'm from Wales anyone who says England makes me really annoyed...
Same here as well
I’m from England and tbh I feel guilty like ik it’s not my fault but 😂 (also as soon as I read “Wales” my brain automatically started reading ur comment in a welsh accent 😂)

In the UK, teachers treat tantrums badly
In the US, teachers treat the student's education badly
In the US, teachers have to avoid their students with guns - in the UK school shootings are not a problem.
So, what was that about how the UK treat tantrums badly? Recent news suggest otherwise.
This is what pisses me of the uk is not just England it is Scotland, England,Wales and North Ireland

*Biggest difference:* Now US teachers carry guns😶

It was never an honor system.
Plump:
I can vote for candidates that support gun control.

Very interesting! Really shows how hard teachers often have to work!
You can’t really compare the two mainly because of the independence granted to districts in The US
Same for the UK.

I agree. Doctors, lawyers, surgeons, etc. etc. It's because of teachers that they are who they are.
It is harder to become a doctor than a teacher. Also a lower 10 percentile teacher will make you miserable for about an hour. A lower 10% Open Spine surgeon will make sure you never walk again.

I don't understand how the teaching profession can pay so low. As a student who is a TA, I can already see that real teacher workloads are insanely high and some supplies come out of pocket. I don't understand how we treat teachers so poorly when they provide society so much.
I find it barbaric how US students are made to sit on individual desks
Hamzah Patel It's better that way because it's easier to concentrate on the subject

Hamzah Patel I am assuming you're from India based on your name? Even in India students sit on individual desks. It depends on which school you're going to. I know cause I have attended 5 different schools.
We aren't always sometimes we have tables and such it depends on the size of the room and the teacher I have a class with long tables, and have had at least one for most of my school time
Hamzah Patel I'm anti social, I love separate desks.
You should not have to pay for your own school stuff the government should provide that.
Actully a small city here in California yeah some teachers get paid around 60k
Meanwhile in Canada, my high school teachers got paid up to 96,000 CAD.

Unchartmario YT realize*
Rlly idc were are the more popular country and more important in the uk with 55 mil people compared to the rest maeking up less then 10 combined and 2.5 trill of the economy
*Nice going infographica show. But what about french school?*
I'm currently in year 10 (10th grade), and I have mad respect for (most) of my teachers, the fact that it takes so long to even become a teacher, then get underpaid, THEN have to manage and look after rowdy kids / teens must means that they are very passionate with their job (i hope lol) mad respect
The fact that so few annoying students can cause so much damage astounds me
Year 10 (UK) would be grade 9 (USA) same ages
