BC Of Anglia Television's Birthday Club, 1980s

  • In 1980, Helen McDermott, then just a few months into her new job at the station, suggested the idea of a puppet co-presenter for Anglia's Birthday Club slot. Helen had previously worked with Gus Honeybun, the Westward Television mascot, and thought the idea could be adapted for Anglia viewers. At first, Anglia wasn't keen, but Helen persevered and in the end BC was made by 'Vera from up the road.'
BC was named after a viewers' competition - the initials "BC" stood for "Big Cat" and "Birthday Club". Some thought that BC was a leopard-like cat, others a bear, but whatever ELSE he was, he was certainly a handful! He was a major star of Anglia Television for over two decades, eventually going digital, and when he was retired in the summer of 2002 Anglia issued the following announcement: 'BC has had a marvellous run on Anglia for 22 years, and we appreciate that many viewers will be sorry to see him go. But nothing is forever in television.'
The memory of those crazy BC days still linger...

My dad Julian Wade, had the pleasure of working alongside Michael Speake during the 80's and 90's at Anglia.
The old man was also one of BC's alter egos... Whenever the Big Cat was being particularly annoying or mischievous I gather you can almost guarantee it was my dad.

I loved BC! I watched him whenever I went to my nans house when I was little! My nan was going to send a card in but forgot the address!

I remember meeting her in Luton in the late 80s. I couldn't have been much more than 5 at the time. :-D

My sister was one of the viewers that named the puppet B.C. and won a prize for doing so along with another girl who's name i do not remember and according to my sister it stood for Beautiful Cat. I watched in the studio as my sister and the other girl gave a short interview as part of the prize, this I belive went out on air and would be great to see it again if anyone knows if it still exists. The rest of the prize was meeting all of the presenters, Katie Glass, Patrick Anthony,et al.

The destruction of local tv companies is nothing less than disgraceful. I really miss the regional quality and identity each area used to have. So much for progress.

This is hilarious, how Helen didn't flip I don't know! I met her in the Castle Mal when I was about 20, I was so happy! People my Boyf was at UEA with were like "who the f is she?"... Local legend! I got her autograph and a hug and also she's tiny. I loved BC, every birthday I'd get my cards, read them out and pretend I was one of these people. I also saw a pic of BC in a book where he had legs and I was so shocked I shouted again and again til my head of sixth form came and told me off....

Yay BC! I loved watching him, as a kid growing up in a little village outside Biggleswade - called Potton! Me and my sister used to play at doing our own Birthday Club at home. Does anyone know what happened to the puppet? I hope someone is looking after him fondly in his retirement. I really think the regions gave ITV something special and frankly, TV sucks now. I hardly ever turn the damn thing on. Just watch Netflix and TH-cam instead.

Marvellously parodied by Susie Blake in Victoria Wood: as seen on TV".
"Can we have 3 wallaby hops from Wally the Wallaby?" "No!"

Does anyone remember one particular Birthday Club where someone threw BC, and he went flying through the air behind the presenter. It was hillarious. Wonder if whoever was responsible got fired.
