The Poor Man's Panzer | 40M Turán I

  • In the later part of the interwar period, the Kingdom of Hungary was seeking to improve its lightly armored motorized units. Domestically, Hungary did not have any tank designs available, outside of the lightly armored amphibious V-4 design. This lack of heavier domestic designs led the Hungarian leaders to search for vehicles to import or produce under license from other countries. This search would find its end in Czechoslovakia and lead the Hungarians to the production of the 40M Turán I and its later derivatives. While the design of this tank proved to be lacking in many regards, its production was a real testament to the power of the weakened Hungarian heavy industry.

    As I understand it re the 40mm gun, They were producing the Bofors AA gun and had got a license for the PaK 36, and decided to mate the two to only have one barrel to worry about making. Quite a punch in its day, but quickly left behind.

      The original czech 47mm Škoda A9 (basically tank version of KPÚV vz.36/PaK 36(t)) was much better gun, close to german 50mm PaK 38 in performace.

      @@jirja3192 incorrect. It was a short barrel low velocity gun. The 4cm was an L60 barrel straight off of a bofors AA gun with 820m/s muzzle velocity, and up to 75mm of penetration at 100m.
      It was undoubtedly insufficient later in the war, but was not completely incapable of damaging the soviet frontline tanks that were its primary opponent.

    The opening foto of two soldiers shaking hands at the beginning of the video is from a pretty specific time. From March 1939 to September 1939. The border marker is actually Czechoslovak one and Hungary gained a border with Poland when it annexed Carpatho-Ukraine and lost it with Soviet occupation of Poland. And i kinda doubt that they would leave the border markers of Czechoslovakia in there for long, so it's likely from the beginning of that period.

      @Ruffus Vampir What the heck are you even reacting to? I'm just putting a date on the picture and not commenting on the current relations. Also I was not talking about current Ukraine, but about Carpatho-Ukraine, which is a region that has often changed hands and was not part of the today's Ukraine till Soviet annexation. Before the first world war it was a part of the Hungarian part of the Austro-Hungarian empire and greater Hungary before that as Carpathian Ruthenia. And I was talking about it only because it's the only place where Hungary and Poland had a common border on which a Czechoslovak border marker could stand.

The series would have included either the German Panther or the Hungarian 80 mm anti-aircraft gun. As no suitable engine was available, two Turan engines were built into it (2x265 horsepower) that could operate separately. He was able to run a single motorway on the country. That way he could save fuel. Like some of today’s cars that turn off a handful of cylinders when they aren’t needed. If one engine injured during a fight, the other was able to move off-road at reduced speed.

    As the next step after the THNP the T21 was a good effort. The period when medium tanks were designed with small caliber cannon was fast passing. It made sense. After all, who would've suspected that the 3.7cm armed PzKw III would be pushed to the margins, while its erstwhile support vehicle, the 7.5cm armed PzKw IV, would end up the main tool of the Panzerwaffe? Not Guderian, apparently.

      Probably availability issues, how available a gun would affect which gun is mounted even if the other guns are better, as an example, IS-2 would have used D-10 100mm gun which has better performance than D-25 122mm gun, however because the 122mm gun and ammunition was more readily available, it was chosen instead, although later the D-10 is used mainly by SU-100 in the later years of the war, and the T-54 and T-55, and the Chinese Type-59 after the war, and some outliers like the T-34-100, T-44-100

    The oversize rocket round was in concept identical to the Stielgranate 41 used with the 3.7cm PaK35/36 in German service. Although quite powerful in the role of punching holes in armor, these Monroe Effect projectiles had laughably short range. Moreover, imagine trying to fit one over the barrel of your main gun while in combat.

    There are photographs of the Romanians using at least one captured Zrinyi and one Turan. The Red Army captured so many recoverable or intact Hungarian tanks that 5th Guards Tank Brigade had formed an independent battalion on them by September 1944. There were 32 vehicles, of which at least 8 were Turans, 3 were Zrinyis, 2 were Toldis and 2 were Nimrods.
    The main prospective opponent that Hungary had an eye on was Romania. In so far as it put the Hungarians ahead of the Romanians in tank production, the Turan was a success.

    • @rogerpennel1798
      @rogerpennel1798 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The road wheels on the Panzer 38T are misleading and the suspension is actually leaf spring. Just like how a lot of people still claim that Russian tanks use a Christie suspension when they actually use torsion bars instead. The large road wheels, slack track, and lack of return rollers aren't necessarily indicative of a Christie suspension.

      Despite the reputation and hype, the biggest death traps in WWII was the german tanks. The mortality rate of tank crews tells the story. The german crews had the least chance to evacuate a destroyed vehicle. Especially with the later designs. The best chance to survive the destruction of the vehicle? Well, that title belongs to the Sherman.
