  • Hello all! I am heavily contemplating on driving my 1989 Chevy G20 Van from south Georgia to Upper Peninsula which is roughly 2600 miles total round trip. I am thinking it will be okay. I need to secure my campground today for June. Scary but exciting!

Man I don’t know I’m kind of nervous for ya! I’m a “what if “ kind of person. My first thoughts are what if something happens really far away? You’d better have a plan to be able to get this beast back home or to a garage that can still find parts for it while you sit it out a local hotel somewhere you’ve never been before. I’m also thinking extreme tune up? Fuel/air filters, plugs/injectors, belts and hoses even? Some of that rubber could be fine for back and forth trips but 3,000 miles……? Check spare tire is not dry rotted and matches the size of current tires. Maybe throw in a full size floor jack and tools for changing a tire. Bring tire repair kit also. Have brake and fuel lines looked over for corrosion, emergency brake looked over. If there is a weak spot on brake lines you could blow a line coming out of mountains. Also thinking about axles conditions or bearing or rear differential seizing over a trip it’s not used to. I’d also be thinking of battery/alternator health. I’d take extra fluids of every kind. Oil, transmission, steering, brake, antifreeze, washer. Maybe some flares, cones, flashlights/lanterns/batteries/chargers/jumper cables/emergency bathroom bucket/bag/tp kit/blankets/food & water.
These are my first thoughts and concerns, I’m sure there will be more!!

Believe me, I have those same thoughts. But I tell myself that driving this van would be such a great adventure.

If you take it easy on interstate I think you would be fine. What part of the UP are you planning on visiting?

I plan on going near the Tahquamenon Falls and Whitefish Point. I want to drive around mostly in that area. Also, the Pictured Rocks area.

Do the basic maintenance have some spare parts and tools and drive it. You will feel the wind a good alignment will help. I bought mine in November it was sitting for 10 years going to drive it 1600 miles to Kentucky in may

Thanks for the tips! Let me know how it goes, especially in Kentucky. I am more worried about how my van will react once it hits the mountains. I think it will be fine but that is the main thing I worry about.

Mine was the same. I would of continued to use my backseat/bed but I had a hard time sleeping on it. That's awesome that you were able to do a long trip like that. I love sleeping in the van on trips too. Thanks for watching again!

Thanks for the comment. I do have some longer content with the van if you look at the playlist. I hope to have a big series on it coming up for my trip to Michigan. Thanks for watching!
