Yes, that works very well. for a two weight a medium MOW tip paired with a OPST microtip would probably be money$$ We use a heavy MOW tip (150 grains) paired with a 10' OPST micro tip and that combo produces amazing linespeeds! Thanks Ian! will try to get that video out soon!
Great video, have you guys reviewed or tried the new Rio skagit max game changer heads for single hand rods? I believe they also have a scandi style head as well for lighter applications.
Great question Marcin!Big game in 25 pound test is the absolute lightest I would go. Even with 25 pound test if you skip it you best replace it right away or you could use your shooting head. 40 is your safest bet but somewhere in between might be the ticket. Thank you for the question tight lines
Hey Tim, as far as big flies go how well does the sa Spey lite scandi compare to the Opst. I’m getting real sick and tired of my junctions catching on my guides.
@@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins that’s what I’m currently working with. I heard Opst has a line with an integrated float tip in the works. Just trying to get rid of junctions on bass rods without going to a standard wf. Maybe Steve godshall can create what I’m thinking of 🤔🤔
Great video! I think what you are really looking for is a wulff ambush, but the new short version! compact like a commando but has the punch and grace of a scandi. Check it out and make a video! love to see what your thoughts are! Keep up the great work!
Thanks Bannsider, I looked up the ambush and I found a 175 grain head for my tiny rod but its too much, so I will go another rout, but that doesnt rule out picking up a bigger rod! like a #4 8" might be just the ticket for the slightly larger head! Thanks for weighing in!
@@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins I will say, with the wulffs you can go slightly heavier (25gr) because of the taper. It may be slightly too much for your rod, but I wouldn't be surprised if it works out for you! I have a 400gr for my 7wt switch and it feels lighter than my 325 commando. Same thing on my smaller rods. It feels lighter and faster than the commando in my opinion, because the weight is closer to the tip and the water load has a little less tension. Either way, I think you'll like it!!!
Far be it for me to tell you what to do when it comes to spey but you'll find the 5 or 7' tips much better for the lighter Commando heads. I'm pretty sure you said you were using a 10' tip and I've found them to be too much also. When I started using the shorter tips on the 150/175 gr heads I had a lot less trouble, mind you my smallest rod is a 9' 3wt or 8.5' 4wt.
Thanks Silverm9r, I agree. I think the 7.5' floater would work nicely on my little 6' 2/3 and lighten the load by 15 grains which might be a good fit. I have a pretty long casting stroke so I don't mind the longer tips if they are reasonable but I'm with you, the easier the better off for functional fishing. Thanks for the response to the video.
I did some experiments in the summer with my 6" 1# single hand rod. I started with the OPST 110gr 14' floating tip. But too heavy. I tried the 10' 90gr. (I THINK...) and that was really sweet. Try OPST tips as heads on teally small rods.

OPST is too expensive for a tiny spey line at $95, RIO is also overpriced.....Funny, if says Spey on the box is must be "special" tiny one-handed line made by magic Elves in SpeySacandia lol
I agree all these lines are way overpriced, check out sierra trading post you can get killer deals of scandi and skagit heads.I own a ton of heads rio,opts,scientific angler and airflo after a ton of use with each a 240 grain airflo scandi and 225 grain opts are the sweetspots for my tfo 4 weight switch.i can be quite expensive to find just the right line...just keep an eye out for deals
hey Steve,, i thought about this maybe a guy should just buy a heavy floating MOW tip for 24.00 bucks and have a go with it "ala commando head" i saw one on sierra trading post for 9.99 plus free shipping ..not much to lose,at any rate just a thought
I owned the spey lite scandi 150grain a few weeks ago,that black back taper really thin,the 180grain version doesn't have this problem.

Sorry I meant the Rio trout spey set ups for 1 handed rigs. They have a skagit and a scandi style
No but I’m willing to bet that they are very nice. Rio does a great job with their short heads. Hopefully I’ll get ahold of one to try’
