I have never touched a skagit line before today in my life. I thought I'd give this a try as I've had so many problems casting big flies on my single hander using traditional lines. I got the 300 grain commando head paired with 35lb. lazar line and a 10ft. T8 MOW tip for my 8wt. single hander. I cut the bend off a zonker fly just in case I'd kill myself and went down to the river to practice. Single speyed fine, double speyed great, and after about two hours I was zinging out that a large fly 60 to 65ft. using a snap T. Totally awesome I'm thrilled with this porduct! I decided to tie on a large sculpin fly and entered a large slow pool to fish the evening. I ended the session with 3 solid early season smallmouth and two I missed. I can't thank you guys enough for sharing this set of techniques. Truly a game changer.
Welcome to it OPSkagit. Please keep putting up these wonderful videos. It's great to see what possibilities are out there for these lines. I'm already putting together a light 4wt. setup for small bass and summer panfish. This is a blast.
Just wanted to let you know that this system has changed the way I fly fish for bass. I'm planning on liquidating a few of my rods and outfitting my three primary setups with OPST skagit heads.
this is really exciting. A few years ago Ed gave me some advise on skagit lines and spey rods for fishing for muskies as I live in northern Wisconsin. I am going to try these lines for bass and muskies here also. thanks
you should show the casting clinic that matt jordan and dave pinzckowski did from minnesota. matt let me use an OPST on my 9ft 6wt and it was awesome. i bought from the website later that day! thank you OPST!!!!!!
Yes. They have a list on their website of every length/gr weight of their heads for single handed, switch and spey rods. All you need is some running line, the correct weight head, and your sink tips.
I'd like to put this system on my 8ft. 4wt. What size of running line and commando head would you suggest? I'd be using it much like in the video for warm water species. Thanks.
Great video. I'm new with my switch rod. I have a Beulah 6/7 Classic switch. I have tried the set up from the fly shop and just cant get the hang of it. After talking to people in my area they all say it wont work. Will your line work on my rod and does it need a running line also. I fish a lot of single hook and articulated streamers.
hey thanks for the quick reply .. cant wait to try out some of these new heads.. i been using the 25 lb lazar line on an old ambush head and really liking it but it is kinda tough for me to deal with in these cold montana winters.. maybe switching to a thicker line would be an upgrade... ..do you prefer the thicker running line(35/40lb) with trout size heads in the 150-200 grain range? still launch just as good?
please list the equipment used on these streams - 6wt - 9ft 4pc rod, backing line (ft?), shooting line (ft?), commado head( 14ft?) - tippet - 9ft - right off the reel i am 23ft - tossing 30ft means letting what another 10 ft of lazar or shooting line - never getting in to backing line on a stream like this....so can i omit the typical backing line 100ft length? thanks in advacne
Again, we think that you're maybe overthinking things with the lengths. Let us know what rod you'd like set up, and we will be happy to give you recommendations. Typically ona 9' 6wt we use a 225 grain Commando Head (13.5'), 7.5' 60 grain Micro Skagit Commando Sink Tips, our 10' 50 grain Micro Skagit Commando Floating Tip, and our 35lb Lazar Line (165' roughly) Backing can range from 100-150 yards.

You guys were wading on a gorgeous tannic looking River, any clue to the name of it? Thanks a lot! Great video! The heads are absolutely incredible!
I know this video is super old but do you have specs on the rods, fly weights and head weights and types you’re using?
awesome video
how were you able to mod your single hang rods with the extension but piece?
Dang 5 years later and they never answere, I was wondering the same.
Love this!
Nice to see you guys on some of our nice Wisconsin streams!!!
OPSKagit, that line looks phenomenal! I can see how it increases opportunity to cover more water. Do the heads come in different weights?
Yes. They have a list on their website of every length/gr weight of their heads for single handed, switch and spey rods. All you need is some running line, the correct weight head, and your sink tips.
9.5' 6 weight single handed rod: 200 grain commando head? What sink tips did you use?
We'd use the 225 grain Commando Head, and the 7.5' Micro Sink Tips, 60 grain.
I loved this video and have been wanting to try spey casting forever! Where can I purchase your products?

What grain wt are you shooting with your single hand rod
Not sure what rod he was using, but we can cover 3wt-9wt single handed rods no problem!
Any chance you guys know the name of that inflatable kayak he was using?
+OPSkagit Thanks a lot!!
I wanna go Commando! What would you recommend for an all around set up for a 9'6" 6wt???
+1 to rescuing dogs!
What would you guys suggest for a 5wt. 8' glass rod
200 grain should work well.
