Imagine it's summer 2001. You're at Rock am Ring and Linkin Park is playing the entire Hybrid Theory album. The crowd lives in the moment and nobody holds a smartphone in the air because these pieces of junk haven't been invented yet. What a time to be alive.
Even though this is just a festival performance, a rather trivial thing, it's seriously hard to find anything that hasn't gone downhill in the years since.
This is my story: I was at the age of 8 years old (2003) when I discovered Linkin Park via my brother. I was totally impressed that music like this did exist. It was a hard time for me because my parents just got divorced and I couldn’t get over it because I thought it wasn’t natural. I have the Asperger Syndrome which makes me obsessed with things and I’m quite a weirdo. In school I had no friends, although I tried, and everyone didn’t want have something to do with me. I was not like the other kids and locked myself in the toilets etc. My older brother was going through his puberty so he had problems with himself which is logical. He was always there for me but I understand he had a lot of problems on his mind as well. Life didn’t make sense to me. I saw no reason to keep on living because I saw my life as a whole failure and there was no one who would understand me. English is not my mother tongue but it’s Dutch so sometimes it looks similar to English. I listened to Hybrid Theory and Meteora and loved it. I had a feeling in the music and in the voice that made come over true emotions to me. I started to listen to it every day and I was always looking forward to listen to it when I was going through another hard day at school. At home my parents (read: mother and stepfather) were always perfecting me and complaining to me about how I should have been. My life kinda looked like the girl her life in the video of Numb. I want to thank Linkin Park for saving my life because without them, I would have commit suicide on the age of 8 years old. I stutter since I was a child and it may sound kind of funny, but the main reason I stutter is because of people wouldn’t let me finish when I’m talking and I found so much understanding back then in Chester screaming ‘Shut up when I’m talking to you!!’ Through those years I smashed my face so many times against the wall when the screaming parts were playing and I abreacted myself so hard on it. Listening to songs like In The End… Even the beginning tune is already so sensible, right? You could just FEEL the emotions and that it was meant so real. In 2 years time I listened at least every day to both Hybrid Theory and Meteora twice, which makes a sum of about 1,500 times in 2 years. Linkin Park helped me out through the hardest time in my life and I would like to thank them for that forever. I don’t want any kind of compassion but I just like to share this story with random people I don’t know and maybe some people can somehow relate to it. I saw Linkin Park at Rock Werchter 2017 in Belgium and it was Chester’s fourth last show. Well, that was some emotional night. At some moments, sometimes even weeks before the show, I cried because I realized myself I was going to see the almighty Linkin Park. That day Blink-182 and System Of A Down played there as well. I wanted to see all three of them at the front area but it was a numbered area so if it was full, nobody else could join it anymore. I was thirsty and hungry and needed to go to the toilet very bad, but I kept staying there for the legends and my heroes Linkin Park. When the intro was playing and I was blinded by the lights, I was shivering on my legs from stress… The moment was really going to happen! I read the setlist before on setlist.fm so I would have an idea what they were going to play and I knew the fifth song was One Step Closer and the first old one at the set. During the intro I was standing there with my hand before my mouth from amazement because I knew they were going to play it… When Brad hit the first notes I was already jumping like a lunatic and I couldn’t stop crying singing along until the refrain was there, haha. During the show I cried at least 5 or 6 times. Through the years I saw a lot of bands and during a lot of songs I wiped a tear away, but I’ll never forget the moment that In The End started and I burst out in tears like a baby. These days In The End reminds me of my former best friend who left me because I couldn’t hide my feelings for her anymore and we never talked again since that day. Probably the song I’ve listened the most ever to in my life. After the show, my legs were hurting so hard and I got a hard cramp in my both legs. I couldn’t even walk anymore and a friend of mine massaged my legs for 20 minutes and it helped. I’ll never forget that and that another friend of me drove to this sacred place where Linkin Park performed a legendary awesome set. (It’s On TH-cam by the way) I could feel a part of my cramps even 3 days after the show, haha. But it was worth it… Chester, I’m happy that we came together in frame on TH-cam during Crawling. It’s now my desktop picture and that will never change. I hope you truly found calmness, silence, peace and eternal rest now. We will love you forever and I know you did your best to fight and keep alive as long as you could on this fucked up world. You saved me and many other people and you and your music will never be forgotten because it will be a part of music history. Although, I have to say you did one unfair thing: I still wasn’t cried out when I was thinking about the concert so how can I ever know how many times I would have cried when I was thinking back about the concert?? I guess it would have never end, buddy. But I know I’m crying right now, and it’s actually not because of the concert… Maybe, before you hung yourself you thought: ‘I tried so hard, and got so far, but in the end, it really doesn’t even fucking matter!’ Sleep tight, hero.
Shinelundaa Enkhbaatar each one has their best band of all time, for me is Linkin Park. I may not listen to them everyday anymore, but I know they were the most important band in my life. Because of them, I started listening to music that I really liked, and discovered the kind of music that I like, started playing guitar, formed my first band, wanted to get a spiked red hair (because of mike on One Step Closer lol), and the first death that I really felt bad and cried about. They will forever have influence in my life, and I’m really proud of it.
Sorry for your loss. Everything feels so random and chaotic. There is no certainty. I know your pain is intense. Turn it into a force of love for those around you.
That intro symbolizes just how Linkin Park took the world by storm - they exploded on the stage with musical precision, energy and attitude. 6 college kids with no musical pedigree burst in with no egos and just cleaned up. With Chester's passing, it just makes these old shows even more nostalgic, the music was their strength and it lives on.
Well said. Some people don't know what it was like to be an impending teen in the early 2000's. The only music I knew was whatever was on pop radio (boy bands and Britney) or classic rock...LP introduced me to heavy rock and hip-hop. Say what you want about the other albums but Hybrid Theory and Meteora are classics.
Yep, there is a lot of hate out there, especially from musical snobs who don't do 'radio'. It's not LP's fault they got so popular and mainstream took them to the next level. Hybrid Theory and Meteora are certainly classics, what a time it was.

Be in there was my biggest dream :( It will never happening anymore you will live in my heart Chester and I will be in your concert when I die and come in heaven... ;'(
There are talents, there are metals, there are music, there are musician, There are vocals, there are raps, and there is LINKIN PARK with deep lyrics and deeper music
Beautiful... sound, voice, crowd, that crazy energy... had a lot of pleasure watching this Goodbye my childhood friend, that's how I'll remember you, Chester Rest In Peace
One of the best Linkin Park performances ever. The crowd enjoy their gigs very well, full of energy and vocal stamina from Chester. Thank God I could watch their show 20 years ago in Jakarta.
2001, Besides 9/11, what a time it was to be alive! Linkin Park was at the top, 11 years old, Xbox, Playstation, Tony Hawk games, Amped Snowboarding and Fuzion Frenzy, Nu metal and Punk/Pop Punk ruled the radio!!!
It was a dream of mine to see them live and just when I got the opportunity to do so. One week before the concert Chester passed away. The only thing I got now is watch all their concerts and this one specifically is where the love for LP started.!! Thank you ❤️LP and thank you Chester❤️.
Definitely died like a coward!! And a legend in his own mind. Only in his mind. He destroyed these talented musicians and their families. He destroyed his childrens’ lives. I hate him for that.

The best everything of all time.
I agree on the intro.
And the worst band of all time
@@jarumsuntik4099 you're adopted.
best illuminati band
Damn I love how Chester been very aggresive in 2001. We'll never forget about you bro, u will live in our hearts.
find out what his life was like back then and you'll understand his anger
I got chills listening to Papercut. I was 10 years old when this was filmed. Linkin Park was my favorite band. No smartphones, no 9/11, no worries as a 10 year old. The things I would do to go back.
every nu metal guitarist has to see a spine specialist now

Hahahahaha man I'm a guitarist myself and I guess it's because I lived this scene, but whenever I see a video or something of me playing I'm also like that. Fucking Saturn devouring his son man! Hahahaha
Yeah, that's so late 90s and early 2000s!
They used to bend, almost touching the floor lol
It gives me so much nostalgia.
This video really took me on a trip to the past... so cool
i was in middle school at this point bumping Hybrid theory in the portable cd player during class and field trips
Im still listening this in 2024, we love you chester!
I am with you, This is my LP what a time .....
Hardest opening ever 🤘🏼 still listening to this show in 2024 and until I die
way to start a concert lol
I think this is one of the best concerts I have ever heard on youtube
hilebard damn true
absolutely one of the best ever
If you're gonna open like that, how does your voice even stay okay for the rest of the concert?!
This guy ❤️
I was 10 y/o .. I've missed out on the main live shows of the band that will give me goosebumps for the rest of my life.
I just made myself sad.
ChaosOnTour I seen them in 2010. Was great. Although was the Thousand Suns era which some people didn't like. I thought it was great.
ChaosOnTour I was 5 when this concert happened, and 13 when I first heard MTM, ATS. I wasn't allowed to go to concerts as a teen sooo I missed out on the badassery big time.
Lucky
Don't be sad, Amon. There is hope yet
No phones at all…just fucking enjoying the moment …the good old days
Check out any of the latest Rock am Ring sets and you still won't see many phones. It's a cultural thing, not one of time.
the world with our phones is much better . youre just a nostalgic stoner
it's crazy to watch this today and realize it's done.
17:47 (Chester sings all up in Mike's face and Mike walks away smiling) Their friendship was real
That's so fucking nostalgic... RIP Chester :'(
Lucky bastards watching this live at this time with this setlist awesome
It was awesome! Probably the best one of the 4 times I saw them live. Good old times! Rest in peace, Chester.
@@Jessica-pl5tm must have been a blast how would you describe the energy of this show live?
I was hasting back home from school to make it in front of the TV in time, because back then Rock am Ring and Rock im Park would still be broadcast on MTV.
Thank you , Ches, for 17 years of great music. Another legend gone too soon.Hope you finally found your peace. You will be missed.
This is a real masterpiece! We love you Chester...

@Sand Castle the crowd of SOAD in BDO'05 was better. Check it out on the same song (Bounce)
My favorite sight of the crowd is @26:21. Legendary!
yea this is so perfect. bringing cell phones to the shows should be forbidden by the law
HiAko
a spine-chilling-scream of pain. RIP to one of the best of the vocalists upon the turn into 21st Century.
The vibe in the 00's shows was something else
I love Linkin Park... I love Chester, I love Mike and all the guys... I can't stop crying watching this. My love. My life. Linkin Park is a part of me and my life... I am heartbroken :'(
Same to me
You must be my soul mate. I am subscribing to you. Ive seen them live in NY three times. Last time i saw them was when they came here for The Hunting Party.

Be in there was my biggest dream :( It will never happening anymore you will live in my heart Chester and I will be in your concert when I die and come in heaven... ;'(
Don't worry you will meet him in heaven. :)

There are talents,
there are metals,
there are music,
there are musician,
There are vocals,
there are raps,
and there is LINKIN PARK
with deep lyrics and deeper music
Beautiful... sound, voice, crowd, that crazy energy... had a lot of pleasure watching this
Goodbye my childhood friend, that's how I'll remember you, Chester

We don't need cellphone in LP concerts
RIP CHESTER!!!!! ONE OF THE BEST LEAD SINGERS OF ALL TIME..... Youll be missed bro.... #LegendForever
Hello there
Kinda hard to say "besides 9/11" - when that's the very thing that ended all of this....
If ur not american it's an amazing year
1:20 !!!!!! and this crowd... amazing !
Yeah, sadly you hardly get any crowds like that anymore :(
COME ONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

All respect to Emily and hope they go on and be successful… but man I just had to come here to hear Chester again.
Voice of a generation
It was his prime here, he was not singing like that anymore
Emily knows that Chester is irreplaceable but hey. She's doing great. I love her courage to hype us all LP soldiers. Persevere Emily. 🙏❤️🇵🇭
Emily is for the simps.
Linkin Park at their fucking best

Anyone else loving that goddam snare??? Sounds so tight, so 2000's. In those times they had snares that cut through. Now they sound like pillows.
Was thinking the same I love the sound of that old snare!

Shotgun Pete drummer confirmed
rip chester
I always tune my snare high and tight. love how it sounds!
Not a phone in sight. Just enjoying the moment. Beautiful
Wow what a performance! Chester is massively missed by many. 🙏🏻 RIP.

“Used to Rock”
It was a dream of mine to see them live and just when I got the opportunity to do so. One week before the concert Chester passed away. The only thing I got now is watch all their concerts and this one specifically is where the love for LP started.!! Thank you ❤️LP and thank you Chester❤️.
Amazing show.
I've seen this concert so many times...
Rest in Peace, Chester.
Sings like Angel
Screams Like A Devil
Died Like A Legend ❤❤
Rip Chester ❤
Died like a coward
Definitely died like a coward!! And a legend in his own mind. Only in his mind. He destroyed these talented musicians and their families. He destroyed his childrens’ lives. I hate him for that.
@@BlueEyes-ro2rv how you can be hundert percent sure it was a suicide?

And chester is gone now..rip brother..can't believe he's dead..feels like he's still around..damnn..
Damn I miss being a teenager in the 90s. The music was so good. You don't know what you got until it's gone... They were awesome times.
16 years already but their songs still on my playlist. One step closer, crawling, bleed it out, somewhere i belong, etc....
chester's golden era..!!
Those screams 😍
