Ive been going to the Anstruther fish and chip bar for over 40 years. Definitely best in Scotland. The fish is fresh out the sea every day from the fish market right off the boats and on to your plate. Its under new management now but i understand the original management have a place in St Andrews that will be worth trying
It is my home county of Fife in the East Neuk of Fife and the place is pronounced Ann struth er. In the summer months you get lots of bike meets at the harbour and the sailing boats are lovely. Great fish and chip shop and a little gem of a place.
Couldn't agree more! The wee chippy is fantastic! Not that the Anstruther fish bar isn't good....just the wee chippy is better. Oh I'll be back for my smoked haddock and chips soon! 😛
Brilliant chippy been in a couple of times. And theirs a little coffee shop about 30 yards behind your van where Jack Vettriano got the inspiration for his paintings.
I used to live in Anstruther and if I wanted a fish supper I'd drive down to Pittenweem. It was quicker than standing in a queue for 40 minutes and just as good.
Went to the one in Pittenweem 25 years ago with my ex's father . He ordered 4 fish suppers and myself ,being on my first trip to Scotland since i was a kid in my northern English accent , asked " can i have chips with mine " . The lady behind the counter upon hearing my accent stopped what she was doing , tilted her head looking down her nose over her glasses at me , then turned to my father in law and said " och , he's one of those is he ? "
A certain other TH-camr from Cambridgeshire went here not so long ago and gave it a superb rating. I’ve heard many good things about the fish & chips here but really, gravy with f&c no thanks! Great review Danny👌
I learn so much about Fish and Chips from your channel Danny. Cheers. Their Curry Sauce is one of the best (from reviews). That Batter just looked amazing. Absolutely light.
That’s a institution, only been the once. That’s it quiet you can wait half an hour to get in the shop. I’ll have to go back and try it again but right by the sea. From Glasgow but we used to love our fish and chips from Inghams Filey because we used to have one of our Holidays around Scarborough and that’s where I’d point to if ever asked but that is only because I can’t remember what this place was like just remember we I went with friends. Great effort visiting from down south mind 👍
Best fish I ever had, by a country mile was a chippy with a pub attached in a place called Ullapool. I was up there for a month in 2005 and it was incredible. I’d love to know if anyone can tell me if it’s still great. I’ve not been since but would love to go back.
You wouldn't be saying 60 minutes to eat fish and chips if you went there in the height of Summer, July/August the queues for that chippy are massive you'll be about an hour just getting in the door.
Villages like the one in the video are fishing towns, what you can't see in the vid is the dock area with the ships and fishing gear, while I agree the cook can make all the difference, the fish you get there are as fresh as they can be. There are other fishing towns with chip shops, yet this is the one that stands out to everyone up here, it's probably the most reccomended place in Scotland to try fish and chips.
Brilliant video as usual Danny but obviously because you where filming he took extra care making sure you got a belter of fish and fishcake, heard all the rumours of how good this place was, and have tried it 3 times now , 1st time it was average 2nd time not so much 3rd time down right stinking, would never be back 😮 apparently there is a better chip shop just round the corner which I haven't tried but will next time am in anstruther Btw everyone who knows me, knows how partial I am to an odd fish supper or 2 lol😜 Been watching you channel for years absolutely brilliant work your doing👌 Keep up the hard work 😁🤔🤣
I find that all chippies are a hit and a miss. I think it depends on who's doing the frying, how busy they are, and lots of other things... My local chippy varies from a greasy mess to crispy perfection!
Brilliant Review Danny great wee bit camera work at the end there.on that wee strip of the town there are 3 fish n chip shops my opinion they’re all pretty good and on par with each other just my opinion!
The hotplate displays are empty.. must be a good chippy and fresh fried is the best! 👍👍 The crunch must be a beer batter or soda. solid 10 im guessing!
Thanks for your recommendation, and I am sure it's welcome in Anstruther, but as a Scot who does not live local and has tried (not as many as you have I'm sure ) fish and chip shops across the UK, this is by far my favourite and I live over 50 miles away!
That's a fair comment Danny, just because a chippie is in a historic cooastal town in Fife that shouldn't mean it's the best, there's probably some chippies in Arbroath jumping up and down screaming at their computers right now, you need to try an Arbroath smokie, best fish on the planet!
Used to be the best. Then it sold n changed hands and has changed hands even since then i think. Its not the original fish n chips it was and they still live iff that old fame. They won serious awards before im talking like 2000 though or so
Danny . Please don,t eat fish n chips all the time need to take alot more healthy foods not greasy foods all the time you have a beautiful family to take care of for many more years to come enjoy the quality time with them all 😢🎉❤
We go to Anstruther a lot as it is about 30 miles from here and it’s a lovely little place to visit, especially in the summer. There are a few chippies in the village, but the best one is the one with the longest queue, and that’s invariably the Anstruther Fish Bar. The fish and chips are always good, at least we’ve never had a bad one yet. Great to see this video and how you enjoyed the food. The fish cake looked really good so I might try that the next time we go.
Anstruther is very good, so are lots of other places in Scotland. I highly recommend Quintillianis in Larkhall. I've been sampling chippies all over the UK for 40 years and to me that is the top one. Outside Orkney any way.
A lot of chippies around the Falkirk area have been doing gravy for years. I think it was more to do with a lot of English contractors working in the Oil Refinery in Grangemouth and they must've been asking for it with their suppers.
I’m Scottish and it is! Just depends on area. Me and husband both grew up west coast 45’mins away from each other and he couldn’t believe how mad it was we had gravy on our chippies!
Too funny. You're rhe 2nd person I've seen review this place. It looks like both of you were skeptical, but they proved to be great. I wish we had a place of that calibre here in Toronto.
Disagree 100 %. I regularly go to The Fish Bar - have been for the last 15 years or so. Tried the Wee Chippie recently (after hearing good things like this) - it was "average" at best. Batter "solid" and "sweet" tasting. Not even close to The Fish Bar.
The famous one is a million times better than the wee chippy which has soggy chips and the batter isn't a patch on the famous one which alos has the best crispy chips i've ever tasted.
No, it's not. I see this comment so much "Acshullly the wee chippy is better" It's not. Just said by impatient boomers who don't want to wait in a queue. I tried the wee chippy recently based on these comments. It was 4/10. Complete disappointment.
@@bigc181 4 points to make... 1 - That isn't how you spell actually. 2 - I'm not a boomer. 3 - The queue is there because of the hype not the food. 4 - It's all a matter of opinion so calm down.
@@andydickson6085 I'm spelling it out in a nerd voice because only a nerd would think the wee chippy is anything other than awful. No palate. Probably eats McDonald's.
Gravy with fish and chips is not that common in Scotland. Some chippies will do it but there are more who do not. I think it's more a north of England thing. Anstruther chippy is a fave of Tom Hanks when he's in the country.
My mum and that whole side of the family are born and bred Anstruther for generations. That yellow fisherman statue used to always be stood outside when I was down there as a kid visiting relatives. My cousins and I used to catch small sea creatures and take them to the Fisheries museum to put in their aquariums and we'd get free entry. Happy days.
As someone who loves a fish supper the best fish and chips is in a small town called Hopeman called the Chippy. The best fish and batter and the chips were right balance of size and crunch to them. Awesome. A fair trek even for us in forth valley but really special
Surely this isn't ANOTHER Edinburgh/Fife video where Danny still manages to not have Chippy Sauce (only sold in Chippies in this area). Even had a bottle of it sitting there on the table!Mental how many chances he has had 😂
Spent many a summer at Anstruther caravan park ,love the harbour Chippy and seafood van ,lovely place ,the pub was called The Ship inn ,my dad spent a bit of time in it lol😃Those were the days Danny ❤
Love to know your secret. The amount of times ive visited Anstruther for the fish n chips, and I've never seen the place so quiet. Wheres all the people, wheres all the seagulls lol? Let alone getting bloody parked right outside the chippy 😂
It’s very good right enough. One more to try on the other side of the country is ‘The Wee Hurry’ in Troon. Pricy with long queues, as everything is cooked to order, but well worth the effort. Sit in the car and look out to sea, or watch the seals playing in the harbour; bliss.
No where near as good as Quintiliani's in Larkhall not only voted best regional chip shop but also every chance of winning the national Fish and Chips!! Not only is the food good but Joe and family are just amazing people!!
London Pub Malt Vinegar.. It's the best from the U.S. Louisiana style hot sauce is even better. Catfish rolled in corn meal and fried up right... Heaven in the South..
The Wee Chippy is our choice because they do Gluten Free Fish EVERY DAY, not like this place only now and again. My wife is coeliac hence our choice and the staff when we eat in are very friendly. Best one in Ain'ster 😛
There is a video of here, guy trying a posh restaurant in London, can't remember if it was Ramseys or one of them, "fresh fish and chips" he had, was about £35 for a bit of batter half that size and when he broke it open the fish inside was tiny was loads of air inside the batter, he had a little dish thing with about 6 chips in it. You got that fresh fish and chips for a tenner and got WAY more food for it.
@@agdewey Might have been, was literally 6 chips they got and a tiny bit fish. You would have thought for the price and location you would get more than a plate full of batter. Edit: I just checked mate yes, thats the bloke and the video, its 9 chips in a dish and a tiny bit fish, I remembered the batter wrong. £37.
I am not short of good Fish and Chip Shops near where I live further south in Fife but we will sometimes drive the 45 minutes or so up to Anstruther as a special treat. Definitely the best Fish and Chips I have ever had.
Was last there a few months ago with my Mum and it was as great as ever. It is a bit of a drive well into Fife, but it is very much worth it Definitely a 10/10 for me here too
I've seen a queue out of that building, up the side and all the way round the block and back onto the main street. Now I don't care how good your fish and chips are, there's not a chance of me being in a queue like that for anything
im lucky to be relatively close to the Anstruther chippy, amazing wee chippy, loads of celebs when they are at St Andrews for the golf use it, inc the King. the fish is really fresh too, the fishing boat stops at the harbour and the fish goes next door to the fish processing place that morning before a 10 yard trip to the chippy.
Went there every summer as a kid. Should come to alloa in Scotland and try the falcon. Best chippy I've tried. Traditional Scottish /Italian chippy. The fish and chips are amazing. Also proper home cooked Italian food.

The fish is fresh out the sea every day from the fish market right off the boats and on to your plate. Its under new management now but i understand the original management have a place in St Andrews that will be worth trying
I also ment to say keep up the good work Danny always watch you videos cheers bud
No, such a Facebook mum comment. The Wee Chippy is awful.
If you head all the way out to Anstruther, don't accept imitations.
It is my home county of Fife in the East Neuk of Fife and the place is pronounced Ann struth er. In the summer months you get lots of bike meets at the harbour and the sailing boats are lovely. Great fish and chip shop and a little gem of a place.
The wee chippy round the corner is the real Star of Anstruther. It's far better 😉
100%
absolutely
Couldn't agree more! The wee chippy is fantastic! Not that the Anstruther fish bar isn't good....just the wee chippy is better. Oh I'll be back for my smoked haddock and chips soon! 😛
@@gregormurphy5979 The best Fish & Chips in the U.K.
If only more people knew 😊
What’s the name of the chippy
It’s definitely worth the drive, always quality!
I'd not been to Scotland for 40 years. Been 4 times since 2022 .
Addicted to your reviews Danny!
You inspired us to start doing video reviews and share our humour!
Keep making them mate 🤝
I seen you're in Glasgow you should try McMonagle's in Clydebank its on a boat in on the river Clyde with the amazing fish and chips
A certain other TH-camr from Cambridgeshire went here not so long ago and gave it a superb rating. I’ve heard many good things about the fish & chips here but really, gravy with f&c no thanks! Great review Danny👌
Love that Fife coast. Nice one!
I learn so much about Fish and Chips from your channel Danny. Cheers. Their Curry Sauce is one of the best (from reviews). That Batter just looked amazing. Absolutely light.
Wow Danny you are far from home, had that chippy a good few times 😊 🏴
Those chips looked fantastic.
You should always put vinigar1stt then salt will hold to batter..on the east coast of scotland we use. Brown sauce.
Putting beef (I assume) gravy on fish is just weird.
Not of necessity. If its cooked in dripping (the traditional way), then it kind of makes sense. Cooked in veg or sunflower oil, no sense at all.
It,s curry sauce isn't it??🤔🤔
Use have it all wrong curry on fish sounds horrible
@@The.real.rabanautcurry sauce on fish n chips is delicious
When we visited in June a few years ago it took almost an hour to get served it was that busy. Worth it tho.
Best fish I ever had, by a country mile was a chippy with a pub attached in a place called Ullapool. I was up there for a month in 2005 and it was incredible. I’d love to know if anyone can tell me if it’s still great. I’ve not been since but would love to go back.
I think there's still 3 fish & chip shops in Anstruther and they're all good.
Friendly staff, clean shop, lovely food. Will be visiting there soon.
You wouldn't be saying 60 minutes to eat fish and chips if you went there in the height of Summer, July/August the queues for that chippy are massive you'll be about an hour just getting in the door.
he wouldnt even get that space to park lol
@@RobertGillespie Myleen wouldn't let him out of her sights.
I've never been as don't fancy the queues but it does look good. The chippy just along from there is really good too.
@@macalauresmuse Go outside of peak summer holiday time and the queues aren't that bad.
It’s over rated
No matter where you live, it comes down to the cook.
Within reason. Some places have much easier access to the highest quality produce which does make a difference.
bollocks,,,give a top chef shit ingredients,,,,it will be shit food,,,eejit.
Danny, I always say to you "bring your own knife fork and spoon.
A great place to enjoy the food!
Brilliant video as usual Danny but obviously because you where filming he took extra care making sure you got a belter of fish and fishcake, heard all the rumours of how good this place was, and have tried it 3 times now , 1st time it was average 2nd time not so much 3rd time down right stinking, would never be back 😮 apparently there is a better chip shop just round the corner which I haven't tried but will next time am in anstruther
Btw everyone who knows me, knows how partial I am to an odd fish supper or 2 lol😜
Been watching you channel for years absolutely brilliant work your doing👌
Keep up the hard work 😁🤔🤣
East Coast chippie in Musselburgh beats them both, hands down!
I find that all chippies are a hit and a miss. I think it depends on who's doing the frying, how busy they are, and lots of other things... My local chippy varies from a greasy mess to crispy perfection!
The famous one is the best chippy i've evr had and i've had chippys from all over the UK. Every single time it's been out this world.
Brilliant Review Danny great wee bit camera work at the end there.on that wee strip of the town there are 3 fish n chip shops my opinion they’re all pretty good and on par with each other just my opinion!
The hotplate displays are empty.. must be a good chippy and fresh fried is the best! 👍👍
The crunch must be a beer batter or soda. solid 10 im guessing!
It’s all cooked to order in Scotland generally
@@seasiderjay5240 I have to get a flight to Scotland then 😇
Thanks for your recommendation, and I am sure it's welcome in Anstruther, but as a Scot who does not live local and has tried (not as many as you have I'm sure ) fish and chip shops across the UK, this is by far my favourite and I live over 50 miles away!
That's a fair comment Danny, just because a chippie is in a historic cooastal town in Fife that shouldn't mean it's the best, there's probably some chippies in Arbroath jumping up and down screaming at their computers right now, you need to try an Arbroath smokie, best fish on the planet!
Arbroath smokies are the don
Behave yourself mr Stewart.
@@TheSanctioningBoxer Behave my friend, you can't deny the smokie is a national treasure!
Is that big ass shipwreck still there? Saw it when I was a kid once.
@@JohnM... You might be thinking of the North Carr Lightship, painted red and was in the harbour as a museum for a few years.
Anstruther is very good, so are lots of other places in Scotland. I highly recommend Quintillianis in Larkhall. I've been sampling chippies all over the UK for 40 years and to me that is the top one. Outside Orkney any way.
Nardini's in Largs too!
North Berwick has a great chippy. @@Yesser-Thistle73
Gravy ain’t a thing in Scottish chippies!👍🏴
A lot of chippies around the Falkirk area have been doing gravy for years. I think it was more to do with a lot of English contractors working in the Oil Refinery in Grangemouth and they must've been asking for it with their suppers.
I’m Scottish and it is! Just depends on area. Me and husband both grew up west coast 45’mins away from each other and he couldn’t believe how mad it was we had gravy on our chippies!
It’s great down in Glasgow we have gravy at chippies
What about chip spice surely they have that? 🤔
@@scooterspringsteen3544
Falkirk 😂 a dump
Stirling is better
Too funny. You're rhe 2nd person I've seen review this place. It looks like both of you were skeptical, but they proved to be great. I wish we had a place of that calibre here in Toronto.
Much prefer the chippy tucked away in the corner. On the waterfront i think its called.
Danny coming from Liverpool,it was great seeing a true foodie give this revue, might have to venture up there to try it.
Wee Chippie by far the best. Anstruther Fish bar rides on the tails of an award it won years ago.
It looks pretty good to be fair.
@@scottybhoy4192 it's good... But not amazing. There are better ones now
Disagree 100 %.
Theres a great wee fish and chip shop in Pittenweem the village before Anstruther. Also Eyemouth is really good for fish and chips.
Gravy isn't a thing in Scotland.
Apparently the shop at the other end of the street is better - The Wee Chippy.
The Wee Chippy has good and bad days, monkfish tails are excellent. Anstruther is consistently good, best fish and batter.
No, it's not. I see this comment so much
"Acshullly the wee chippy is better"
It's not. Just said by impatient boomers who don't want to wait in a queue.
I tried the wee chippy recently based on these comments. It was 4/10. Complete disappointment.
@@bigc181
4 points to make...
1 - That isn't how you spell actually.
2 - I'm not a boomer.
3 - The queue is there because of the hype not the food.
4 - It's all a matter of opinion so calm down.
Correct
@@andydickson6085
I'm spelling it out in a nerd voice because only a nerd would think the wee chippy is anything other than awful.
No palate. Probably eats McDonald's.
Danny Malin is the Epitome of Decency and Down to Earthness a true Hero
Gravy with fish and chips is not that common in Scotland. Some chippies will do it but there are more who do not. I think it's more a north of England thing. Anstruther chippy is a fave of Tom Hanks when he's in the country.
My mum and that whole side of the family are born and bred Anstruther for generations. That yellow fisherman statue used to always be stood outside when I was down there as a kid visiting relatives. My cousins and I used to catch small sea creatures and take them to the Fisheries museum to put in their aquariums and we'd get free entry. Happy days.
In the East of Scotland we have "Chippy Sauce" on our chippy instead of gravy. Should have tried it, it's class! Mon the Ainster ❤
Love chippie sauce.
Gold star brown sauce is the chippie sauce of choice.
Nicely done at the end there cameraman 😎
No where near as good as Quintiliani's in Larkhall not only voted best regional chip shop but also every chance of winning the national Fish and Chips!! Not only is the food good but Joe and family are just amazing people!!
The vinegar they use at fish and chip shops is not malt vinegar its a synthetic one thats cheap to make
London Pub Malt Vinegar.. It's the best from the U.S.
Louisiana style hot sauce is even better.
Catfish rolled in corn meal and fried up right... Heaven in the South..
Looked beautiful food that. Bit pricey but don't mind if it's all cooked well.
Danny, folk in Fife call it "Ain-ster", but ye English can call it "An-struth-er", language differnce appart, welcome to Scotland m8!!
Ramsey is overpriced at every one of his restaurants. He is more a celebrity than a chef these days.
Was it Gary Eats, trying Tom Kerridge's fish and chips in Harrods?
@@agdewey Might have been, was literally 6 chips they got and a tiny bit fish. You would have thought for the price and location you would get more than a plate full of batter. Edit: I just checked mate yes, thats the bloke and the video, its 9 chips in a dish and a tiny bit fish, I remembered the batter wrong. £37.

Definitely a 10/10 for me here too
I've seen a queue out of that building, up the side and all the way round the block and back onto the main street. Now I don't care how good your fish and chips are, there's not a chance of me being in a queue like that for anything
And me mate, I wouldn't queue like that if they were free ☹️

The Wee Chippy is way better with short queues as it’s not a tourist trap.
im lucky to be relatively close to the Anstruther chippy, amazing wee chippy, loads of celebs when they are at St Andrews for the golf use it, inc the King. the fish is really fresh too, the fishing boat stops at the harbour and the fish goes next door to the fish processing place that morning before a 10 yard trip to the chippy.
Went there every summer as a kid. Should come to alloa in Scotland and try the falcon. Best chippy I've tried. Traditional Scottish /Italian chippy. The fish and chips are amazing. Also proper home cooked Italian food.
