      It's some sort of saddle-backed bush cricket, and they're omnivores with their diet being like 90% plants. Most katydids /bush crickets are omnivores actually, and the majority of them prefers plants (with some exeptions like Saginae and Listroscelidinae). The spiders you found in order (as far as I can tell, no guarantee for correctness):
    1) obviously (and you said it in teh video already) Araneus diadematus
    2) relatively sure it's Araneus marmoreus, but don't take my word for it, they can have VERY different colours and sheme on the abdomen
    3) almost 100% sure it's Argiope lobata, and a pretty fat female at that - close relative to that wasp-looking orb weaver

    • @_YellovvJacket_
      @_YellovvJacket_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As far as the insects go, the first '"grasshopper" wasn't a grass hopper but rather Decticus verrucivorus, a bush cricket/ katydid. Normally they're green, but in dry environment they're often brown or grey.
      The thing that bit you was also a bush cricket, looks a lot liek a saddle-backed bush cricket (Bradyporidae) - probably from the genus Ephippiger.
      The mantis was definitely from the genus Ameles, the best guess here would be Ameles decolor, but the adult one (definitely a male btw) could have been Ameles spallanzania too.

    • @gshaindrich

      _YellowJacket_ 1) not Decticus verrucivorus, but D. albifrons, they´re always brown and have longer wings than D. verrucivorus
      2) Araneus angulatus

    • @_YellovvJacket_
      @_YellovvJacket_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The shape of the abdomen is quite different from A. angulatus, I was thinking of angulatus first too, but after lookign a bit at 14:36 I'm pretty sure its not.
      Youre probably right on the grasshopper, though I''ve seen a lot of grey/ brown D. verrucivorus in dry habitats.

    • @gshaindrich
      @gshaindrich 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, for me the shape of the abdomen looks different than that of A. marmoreus, yes the tubercles are not visible very well, it is definitely not a very good camera angle to see them. At least I think I see them ;)

    The first "grasshopper" you showed us was a Roesel's bush-cricket (Metrioptera roeselii) and from what I remember they are predatory - as was the one you tried to handle (don't know that species however).
    The one showed between them was a regular grasshopper - a gentle, not-biting one.
    Rule of a thumb - if they have short antennae and long abdomen - they are friendly, gentle hoppers.
    If they have long antennae and look kinda fat/have short abdomen - they can and will bite you.
    The big, green katydids (bush crickets) Tettigonia viridissima can bite you so hard you might bleed. Tho - my turtle loved to eat those so I tried to catch them when I saw one.
    Not sure if you could manage to keep those, I never tried.
    As for the spider - it's Argiope lobata which was easy to find as it was obviously related to the Wasp Spider native to my country. I had the genus down so a bit of googling did the trick.

    Locusts are a sub-classification of Grasshoppers who, when population density is high owed to overcrowding, get triggered to through physical (and behavioral) changes and morph to a swarming form. The two forms (of the same exact grasshopper species, remember!) can look so different scientists initially assumed they were different species. It is also common to say a Locust IS a Grasshopper who happens to be in swarming phase. Check out these crazy differences: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locust#/media/File:DesertLocust.jpeg

    • @catcallender5913
      @catcallender5913 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      grizzlehatchet1 that is a cicada not a locust, although many mistake them for locusts as some species come out from underground only once every 13-17 years in droves when they reach adulthood then go back underground. East coast of the US we have locusts like the one in the video year round, as well as the swarms of periodical species. Locusts have back legs like grasshoppers & jump as well as fly. They look very anatomically similar to grasshoppers.

  • @CyberRabid.

    Locust and grasshoppers are the same thing. They start as grasshoppers, but a metamorphosis happens when large numbers of them group together and they form swarms. The swarming grasshoppers, who have turned from green to gray (at least our N. American species), are now locusts.
    Also, grasshoppers don't bite. That cute little bitey thing was most likely a katydid.

    English lessons: 3:15 Those are called wind turbines in english, or windmills if you aren't feeling precise. 4:34 Technically a locust is a type of grasshopper that creates big swarms, but sometimes I call a big grasshopper a locust too. 5:15 I believe that is a cricket, not a grasshopper. 6:44 that bug is a cicada. And the type of pattern you notice on the spider at 17:40 is called a serration pattern, and the bumps are called serrations.

    Locusts fly in swarms and look like grasshoppers. Grasshoppers don’t fly, but they glide pretty far. Also when I hike mountains, I’ll see a species of grasshopper that look very similar in coloration to the ones you showed right after tarantula Kat, but the ones I see on a hike have a distinct wing pattern that looks like a butterfly with eyes and make very loud clicking/snapping noises when they are in mid-air.

    A fun and very interesting video; I love that you take the time to do this for everyone's enjoyment. Some older people that aren't mobile and kids who love "bugs" should especially appreciate it. I also found the orb spider's unusual spinner placement interesting. I also found it interesting that our cicadas here in the USA (So. California) look the same but sound so different. Ours are at least ten times as loud, being almost deafening when many are calling at the same time. Also fun is hearing the "why the long face" horse joke from someone who lives so far from me and who speaks a different language. It has always been one of my favorite silly jokes. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

    I think that the difference between locust and grasshopper is that locust are feeding on insects and grasshoppers are eating plants, but im, not 100% sure :)

    • @anonymousaccordionist3326
      @anonymousaccordionist3326 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      just looked it up. Locusts in small densities live exactly like a grasshopper, but in large densities they band together into swarms of thousands and act as a herd.

    • @Czechants
      @Czechants 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, but we are both kinda right in mycountry we are calling all carnivorous ones locusts and herbivorous are grass hoppers :D

      Grasshoppers are predators, Locusts are not - they are plant eaters. In my country as far as I know we got pretty small Locusts and quite big Grasshoppers like (Tettigonia viridissima) and we call them both "Pasikonik" or "Konik Polny" and its a bit funny (Konik - horsie, Polny - field = field horsie? :D)

    Also, locusts are grasshoppers - the same grasshoppers that are living in the area already. But if their numbers grow too large, this causes them to literally morph (change their behavior drastically) into locusts, swarm, and start eating everything in sight. :3 (Taken from TV tropes)

    Difference between grasshoppers and crickets; grasshoppers are lean and have smaller antennae, while crickets are thicc with long whip-like antennae. Also, crickets don't jump as much as grasshoppers.

    Orb Weaver, not sure which... Those ones actually make good enclosureless pets. Put them in the corner of a room, by the ceiling. They tend to spin a web, then just throw some flies in the web every couple days, and they'll tend to stay put! I had one named Rufus... Rufus, Rufus, fanged and toothless!

    Beautiful Argiope! I spent way too much time sacrificing grasshoppers to Argiope and Araneus spiders when I was a kid. I was terrified of the Araneus. :)
    In Greece and Turkey, I would always go the other way if I heard sheep or goats, because there would always be dogs to protect them, and they could be nasty...
