Also, he went around the world by himself in like 160 days in 2004 on a hub-gear bike with full gear. I think that's a bit more impressive than his 78-day with a full team with him on a cutting-edge bike, having already done it. When he did it in 2004, he was only about 23-years-old.

I would welcome a GCN video where we get to meet the crew and editors and general behind the scenes gang. Their output is unreal and production value always very high, especially on more ambitious videos. Have they ever done anything like that?
Back when I was young and bulletproof I did Cycle America. A 12 week, 12 state tour from Portland Oregon to Portland Maine. Rain or sun shine, it even snowed on us going through the mountains. Everyone should do something like this at least once in their life. We rode between 70 to 120 miles per day. Now eons later, I’m trying to get my bike legs back, this ride brought back those long days in the saddle memories. Next year I’m hoping to be able to do it again.

Thanks for the video. I’ve got 2 friends now literally as I type attempting 500km at one go for the rapha festive 500. They started yesterday around 6pm and have now clocked 260km. It’s 4.25am local time here in SG. They are on time trial bikes btw. I and couple more friends will be heading out to join and support them and give them some draft as well. We hope to pull them till completion of the 500km challenge. Cheers!
That was a top effort from Hank! 8 hours on a TT bike - give the man a chilled cushion to sit on! Mark made me cry with shame when he said, "I'll just keep a steady pace for 8 hours - about 30km/h".... that is a bloomin fast tortoise!
I’d have taken the Endurance rig for sure. I did a similar challenge on Winter Solstice, with the aim of doing 200km of paved and snirt (snow-covered dirt) roads. Weather cooperated nicely, hovering around freezing, and I pulled off 201.35km in 7 hours, 9 minutes rode time. That got me home almost an hour before dark, to my family’s surprise, and that was with a coffee stop; sweet! I’d never considered such a winter challenge, but it felt like exactly what I needed this year.
All the Mark Beaumont shows on GCN are fantastic. From the vintage bike "Le Tour de France" to the trip to Patagonia. Hank is the perfect companion, just like Don Quixote and Sancho.
@@KandiKlover 18mph for 7 hours straight is far from "not bad at all". Then again Mark is the endurance gold standard considering the man rode 13000 miles in 80 days.
@@blackeesh463 The key to keeping up the speed is fueling. I did a 200 mile ride last summer, relatively untrained. I really focused on getting fueling right, and that made it possible to do 31kph or 19.3mph average.
Mark seems a bigger guy. Power (needed) is directly proportional to the mass you are moving. My FTP is around 200 W, so same as Hank, but I'm heavy (too heavy!) - a good 8-hour ride for me is about 140 km.
Love the respect they both have for each other, and each one of them individually. They both are fantastic each in their own way and approach. Fantastic to watch and follow your adventures!

For those that don't know, there are 12 hour and 24 hour time trials. Some people were using time trial bikes when I supported some friends do the Welsh 12 hour fifteen years ago.

Great video. I've often done 100 milers in the winter and this trying for the Audax RRTY, which means doing 200km ride every month for a year. Nice in the summer, bit daunting in the winter.

Coincidentally, I did a 188km ride last week, across the Netherlands (so a ride as flat as a pancake). Preemptively burning all the calories I was to eat while celebrating Christmas. 4:58 WOW they are so polite & patient in the 🇬🇧!!! If that was filmed here 🇺🇸 you'd hear a sympathy of horns followed by profanities, tailgating,threats & maybe a confrontation 😂...& the cyclist would be considered the rude 1 for not letting them by.
Maybe the filming motorbike helps ease the tension. The difference i’ve noticed between place like canada/northern US states vs europe is that we have “snow plow turnaround” areas on the road which are also very useful to get out the way and ease the amassing rear traffic. I simply couldn’t live with myself holding up more than 3-4 cars
I did a 9h 40m ride yesterday. Covering 233km 1266m elev on a TT set up. Idk but I can hold TT position forever. Even aero bikes. Awesome video GCN as always! Happy holidays!

When Hank was describing Marks bike I was expecting him to say "it is designed to be lightweight, confortable....and ugly"...it looks like if someone would have front crashed with it against a wall!
I had a similar idea with aiming to ride from sunrise to sunset on the shortest day around Edinburgh. Unfortunately the route I planned crossed the city centre twice which slowed me down, as did stopping at my flat for lunch with a trip to co-op required for bread and milk. I managed 135km, it was definitely a good idea to get me out on the roads for some winter endurance training though. Roll on the spring equinox!!!
Very enjoyable video. I ride year round here in Colorado, but I don't do such huge rides in December and January. If I'm riding 150 K and up at this time of year I find I'm burnt out by the time the true season has come around.
I'd love to see Mark and Olli in a build up of the ultimate endurance bike on hookless wide rims. Would you? Maybe a series of build ups... Tech talk... Everesting bike, time trial, endurance, gravel.... Love those bits
I can tell you from personal experience that a TT bike/Tri bike uses different leg muscles than a road bike. Plus your neck gets stronger so you can stay in aero longer. Not to mention the needed flexibility in the lower back. I can't ride a road bike all summer long then hop on a Tri bike and expect to do my best.

I find this saddle very comfortable - in fact, it's about the only saddle I can ride these days.

Both my friends completed their 500km ride. Total riding time 16h 37m. Elapsed time around 22.5-23 hours. Avg spd 30kmph. Simply amazing

Watching Hank do ultra endurance riding has become my favorite part of GCN. Given me a lot of good riding ideas.

18 mph is not bad at all. Specially on a trendy weird look road bike like that and smooth asphalt. I do that over gravel on my XC mountain bike.

Very enjoyable video. I ride year round here in Colorado, but I don't do such huge rides in December and January. If I'm riding 150 K and up at this time of year I find I'm burnt out by the time the true season has come around.

I'd love to see Mark and Olli in a build up of the ultimate endurance bike on hookless wide rims. Would you? Maybe a series of build ups... Tech talk... Everesting bike, time trial, endurance, gravel.... Love those bits
I can tell you from personal experience that a TT bike/Tri bike uses different leg muscles than a road bike. Plus your neck gets stronger so you can stay in aero longer. Not to mention the needed flexibility in the lower back. I can't ride a road bike all summer long then hop on a Tri bike and expect to do my best.
