  • A Philippine lawmaker sounds the alarm on attempts to ease restrictions on foreign investments. House minority member Carlos Zarate asserts, businesses in the Philippines should be controlled by Filipinos. He adds, even with current restrictions on foreign investments, the Philippine economy is thriving. But Gary Olivar, a member of President Duterte's Inter-Agency Taskforce On Constitutional Reform, insists easing restrictions will result in more jobs for Filipinos.

Kudos to Vietnam, Indonesia, etc for gaining investors from Japan, US and Europe who are relocating from China.

Both Vietnam and Indonesia are in China's debt trap by having their Chinese infrustructure companies make lots of their infrustructure. Tofu Dreg projects? Maybe. I hope you know there is also a possibility that Chinese company could end up owning Telecom in Philippines. All your data, even bank accounts and internet searches would no longer be private but owned by China since all Chinese companies are mandated by their government to send every data they own to their government. Foreign may mean US, Japan and other such well meaning countries. But foreign could also mean China, Russia and North Korea. The countries trying to expand their territories.

If the policies Zarate and the non-business/non-MBA intelligentsia of UPD, ADMU, and others are advocating are absolutely correct, why is the Philippines still lagging in most economic indicators?
Here's the answer: "intellectuals" as well as life term bureaucrats don't suffer a penalty for being wrong.
They get to keep their jobs if they make a wrong guess-which they repeatedly do.
Unlike businesses who face bankruptcy if they choose the wrong direction, intellectuals don't have such a disincentive so they keep spouting the same TRIED AND FAILED policy prescriptions and the rest of Pinoy society continue to suffer.
PROTECTIONISM leads to poverty in the Philippines.
Overregulation doesn't regulate the oligarchy and the connected.
High taxes are borne by the fast vanishing middle class.
If these clowns were SERIOUS about real solutions, they would head in the OTHER DIRECTION: less regulation, smaller government, lower taxes, greater local and regional autonomy, free trade, and free markets!

Relaxing foreign investments cannot be mixed with bureaucracy and corruption..... corruption is purely governmental failure in terms of management. Many countries already had very loose foreign investment policies with 100% foreign ownership yet had little or no corruption..... do not try to hide the government's weakness in proper governance by shifting the blame for loosening foreign investments.

what is wrong with otherwise provided by law cong zarate, that is where the congress comes in, to debate and craft laws unless u dont trust the institution,, kong mag bidding either the dragons and castilaloys lng palagi ang nagcocontest sa bidding, what wrong in lifting it, if u think it will make dent on securities then thats is where the congress steps in.

tweet: Philippines has an open investors policy still to this day. Foreign investors would do very well in the Philippines right now primarily due to cheaper labor wages and high unemployment rate. Investors will need manpower to open a business anywhere and this policy is also true in the Philippines. Come invest and enjoy some of the advantages the country has to offer. be blessed.
