flow, intention, tenderness - words that came to mind while listening to this. "Goodness" is a matter of taste but I can't help loving their palette of instruments and timbres and how naturally the acoustic and "synthetic" worlds weave together.
I'm in love. She's perfect in every way. Absolutely genius composer, absolutely genius singer, beautiful and with lots of personality sparkling through those eyes. Very feminine without being the typical little princess, which is becoming something quite rare these days.
I love the originality. And I can appreciate this for what it is. And to put it simply, what 'it' is, is "Good." In my opinion, the term 'hipster' gets thrown about as a cop out by people who don't comprehend the newness, ideas or ambiguity of what something is. What Julia and her band are doing, in my opinion, is simply some excellent, multi-layered unconventional musical composition. It's hardly pop formulaic with a smattering of pretension, it reeks of free jazz with a folk beatnik storytellers bite. Love it or hate it, Julia and her band own it; and it's fun to watch them play it. So please- just because she's wearing glasses while playing a keyboard, sings with a nontraditional cadence, there is a stand up bass present & drummer guy is playing with brushes instead of sticks; refrain from calling it 'hipster.' Because that description would be incorrect.
+Mike Langhoff very eloquently put my friend. I can't agree more. I wish everyone discussed music the way you did. Everyone else seems hyper critical whereas you take a more genuine perspective. You expressed yourself but did so in a way that demonstrates your knowledge of music and composition. Very well done, sir! BTW, just for the record I can't get enough of those glasses
Man, this started off way out there, but have to admit, after just accepting it for the first couple of songs it really wore on me fast and really digging it. Thank you KEXP. Awesome Channel!
That last song "City Appearing" ....slows my heart rate, honestly. Love her vocal delivery and the instrumentation reminds me of Kate Bush's 50 Words For Snow
Julia Holter is a complete genius and the Loud City Song album is absolutely superb! She employs an excellent ensemble of musicians who offer something decidedly different and they are ten times more interesting than the mainstream! Here is link from the Wire magazine website worth checking out: www.thewire.co.uk/archive/artists/julia-holter
Love this channel. I don't even listen to KEXP, but its youtube videos helped me discover so many new artists, that I wouldn't even have heard of without this channel. Thank you SO much.
The drummer is the coolest guy. Look at the beer belly, sweat pants, dirty white tshirt, and creepy facial expressions. The video should just stay on him the whole time!
Wow. Wasn't diggin' it for the first few seconds but once I got a taste of her way with words and the movement of the song.... Downloading the album now.
she's charming and funny and her music is lovely and intelligent. not for people who just want to hear simple beat and melody (see all the dumb comments below). loud city song is a cool soundtrack-y vibe while her earlier work, particularly 'tragedy" her debut is a bit more avant-noisey. all her shit is great though.
it's exactlly because of comments like those bellow that the music business is shit nowadays. people care more about foundation tones in make-up and if people are dressed properly for a radio show than the fact that she has 3 major albums out. one of them considered to be the best album of 2013 by many of the best music magazines of the world (Wire, for ex.), And because it doesn't really sound like anything very specific, as she blends and mixes genres like synth pop and jazz to create something new, people just dislike it. Just listen to it, it's perfection.
Daniel Lourenço I totally understand your gripe, but that doesn't take away from the fact that, no matter what your aesthetic preferences are, Julia is very pretty both in her looks, and her voice.
Instantly recognizable music. Jean Michel Jarre loves her too (made a beautiful song together with her) and he ventilated these warm and respectful words and thoughts about this great artist!
When I first watched this I just didn't feel the vibe. I think it was because its so different. A day later and I see with a fresh less biased perspective; amazing music.
Wotsma Naym so their demeanor defines their style of music, relaxed. By casual music fan I meant those who like everyday music made for everyday people with everyday tastes. Despite the relaxed atmosphere I find this music quite unusual yet interesting.
Wotsma Naym more pretentious than using facetious in a TH-cam thread? In this case it is true that it takes one to know one. There are a lot of really undeserved, ignorant and ugly comments in this section about an artist that I respect. I won't change my stance even though it appears that I am being pretentious about music. It's not for everyone and I wish that folks who do not understand would just accept that and find other stuff to watch rather than post about their inability to grasp something different.
City shoes found ways down green fertile valleys See I never could fall down straight in line so sure Someone with a thing to say writes on a leaf and lets it fall onto my feet I receive the news so small a child who cannot understand I can't hear and I don't know And the wind slows down so Still a tree's a tree! So calm and for a moment it makes sense But the tree says "la la" And the language is strange the woman's "wa wa" Am I too bored to understand? Well good, I'm done Off to the wild for me In the green wild I am gone My hands, toes, shoulders gone But the shoes my feet have worn still remain And they walk toward the sea There's a flavor to the sound of walking no one ever noticed before There's a humor in the way they walk Even a flower walks But doesn't look for me It walks just as it's grown It's laughing so naturally It tells me a tree's a tree
The fact that not everyone likes this is true testament to the fact that it is worth listening to. Her music is not simplistic, pop mainstream, user-friendly music for the masses. Although, it's certainly not THAT challenging. Much like Laurie Anderson or Kate Bush there is a lot to hear in each song - especially in her voice.

The high amount of hipster comments to this video annoys me. Can't we just enjoy music and stop label everything and placing ourselves in different camps. "The mainstream music listeners Vs. Hipsters". If you're only into the stuff that's being played on the radio, then you probably haven't explored your musical side enough. And perhaps you don't feel as much as I feel when I listen to music, we are all different. I don't personally like music, I obsess over music. People who only listen to music when they party or when they drive to work probably doesn't share my passion for music, leaving us with different tastes. If you proudly say that you are a hipster and feel the need to hate on people who doesn't like music like this. Then you are not cool, you are not sophisticated, you are just a pretentious asshole.
9 years later and I am still listening to this.
She's so gorgeous ughhhh
that's beauty of the internets.
Beauthony Internetano
The melon is everywhere, I'm not even surprised anymore
The ending to This Is A True Heart was phenomenal. Really beautiful song.
she is totally high in this video and I love her.
I think she's just very gentle, but she did spell out a domain name, so maybe so
I am high while watching this and, you are correct, sir
Very subtle but full arrangements. She has definitely deserved all the critics praise.
this is just flawless

Then you would love Eleanor Friedberger. Listen to the Songs Roosevelt Island and My Mistakes
Very true
Nice performance, great music.
They are all so baked haha, love it.
I love the originality.

+Mike Langhoff what is a cadence?
the inflections and modulations in one's voice
Mike Langhoff it is terrible
I love how vulnerable she acts off the mic. I just find it so cute, that combined with her voice and her looks.
What a fabulous first concert listen.
Man, this started off way out there, but have to admit, after just accepting it for the first couple of songs it really wore on me fast and really digging it. Thank you KEXP. Awesome Channel!
Best arrangements ever *_*
Julia is the best. Thank you for this!
She's sounds so fresh! I love it
Love the second song
Best album of 2013 by far.
I had a bad acid trip back in the 70s and this is the flashback I just had.

Loud City Song is one of the best albums of 2013...no question
the drummer singing is my favorit part
Gives me chills ... Good Job
So glad that this was posted. Acid rock with class and complexity.
Julia is amazing. and thanks for what you do, KEXP!
Best singer-songwriter of the decade, no contest. No one's currently taking the risks that Julia does.
+Clariboia Anal Joanna Newsom
I'd argue Robin Pecknold
Very interesting, thank you KEXP!
the way julia says the word “saxophone” is something that can be so personal
That last song "City Appearing" ....slows my heart rate, honestly. Love her vocal delivery and the instrumentation reminds me of Kate Bush's 50 Words For Snow
superb and sublime

This beats her more recent performance on the network. The material is more frisky and on it's own. Thank you KEXP
Love this channel. I don't even listen to KEXP, but its youtube videos helped me discover so many new artists, that I wouldn't even have heard of without this channel. Thank you SO much.
Great music!!
When she starts spelling out her website URL... BIG CRUSH!
I love KEXP live ^ ^ GOOOOD GOOOOD ~~~~~
The drummer is the coolest guy. Look at the beer belly, sweat pants, dirty white tshirt, and creepy facial expressions. The video should just stay on him the whole time!

This definitely had that dreamy lazy parisian coffeshop feel, definitely have to be imaginative to enjoy this.
Wow. Wasn't diggin' it for the first few seconds but once I got a taste of her way with words and the movement of the song.... Downloading the album now.

she is so special
Que placer enorme ver a una mujer tan talentosa, preciosa, envuelta en las mieles del THC...
So flatteringly said. :)
Very nice.

It does sound like something specific. A lot like Laurie Anderson tbh
Even the camera-person started laughing when she was spelling her website at 14:13 :) Interesting performance, enjoyed it.
Wish I would have discovered this greatness earlier...
Instantly recognizable music. Jean Michel Jarre loves her too (made a beautiful song together with her) and he ventilated these warm and respectful words and thoughts about this great artist!
in love
This is really cool.
Como no enamorarse ?
Great music! She's absolutely gorgeous, by the way!
very, very cool
When I first watched this I just didn't feel the vibe. I think it was because its so different.
A day later and I see with a fresh less biased perspective; amazing music.
Sorry this is not for the casual music fan. If you don't get it, it's now time to return to your regularly scheduled programming.
So this isn't casual music? They look pretty casual to me.
Wotsma Naym so their demeanor defines their style of music, relaxed. By casual music fan I meant those who like everyday music made for everyday people with everyday tastes. Despite the relaxed atmosphere I find this music quite unusual yet interesting.
Eric Peyer
Thanks for the clarification, but I was just being as facetious as you were pretentious.

2:16 is where it got good.
Great shit
brano da 4:37....sempicemente GENIALE !!!
Just when you think you know where this song is going, it jumps off the cliff and into a swamp of self indulgence
Damn if she is high...she is the coolest girl ever!!!
she is so pro
the drummer is epic ;D
Well, that was massive.
"Son! Are you on drugs?!?!"
"No mom, just listening to some Julia Holter..."
Exactly my friend
hahaha ...hell yeahh!!!
City shoes found ways down green fertile valleys
See I never could fall down straight in line so sure
Someone with a thing to say writes on a leaf and lets it fall onto my feet
I receive the news so small a child who cannot understand
I can't hear and I don't know

Still a tree's a tree!
So calm and for a moment it makes sense
But the tree says "la la"
And the language is strange the woman's "wa wa"
Am I too bored to understand?
Well good, I'm done
Off to the wild for me
In the green wild I am gone
My hands, toes, shoulders gone
But the shoes my feet have worn still remain
And they walk toward the sea
There's a flavor to the sound of walking no one ever noticed before
There's a humor in the way they walk
Even a flower walks
But doesn't look for me
It walks just as it's grown
It's laughing so naturally
It tells me a tree's a tree
i watched the whole vid cause i was stoned. it still was nice when i got sober. this doesnt happen a lot
Or just plain awesome

***** Weird.... But no I don't.
I like the drama of the music background
This is all I can pay attention to now.......
I did not expect this at all! Kind of interesting though, sounds pretty fresh.
Now this song has a good likeable beat.
big band !! :-)
Gute Musik! Erinnert mich an Miles Davis' "In A Silent Way" (vor allem das Keyboard in "City Appearing").
"I am so pro now"
- Julia Shammas Holter.
wow
