    The fact that EA is referring to Sims 4 as "The Sims 4 base game" shows they intend to release as little as possible and have you micropay your way into an early bankruptcy.

    On the subject of animals performing supposedly-selfless acts. There is such a thing as "group selection". As in, the natural selection of groups instead of the natural selection of individuals. Individuals who perform selfless acts are less likely to survive, mate, and propagate; however groups that have some individuals who are willing to perform selfless acts for the sake of the group are more likely to survive and propagate than groups that consist entirely of individuals who are all looking out for their own.
    Ergo, it benefits a species as a whole, and this includes humans, to have the capacity for selflessness encoded into the species' DNA. So it's not that altruism is inherently selfish, but that altruism has the ulterior purpose of serving the survival of the species, rather than doing good for good's sake like some starry-eyed idealists might believe.

    • @RyanGatts
      @RyanGatts 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thanks for that very clear explanation, I was going to type much the same thing, but instead I'll link to these RadioLab productions on altruism: www.radiolab.org/story/103983-equation-good/ www.radiolab.org/story/103951-the-good-show/

      @RFC3514 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, "altruism" _is_ a manifestation of selfishness (at a genetic level). Basically, your genes are telling you to sacrifice yourself because it benefits _their_ clones. It's a bit odd that, in 2015, some biologists still treat (and some teachers still teach) natural selection as something that happens at the _individual organism_ level.

    This seems like an interesting game done in by the technical limits of its system. It definitely has a lot of mechanics going at once, and encourages methodical yet quick-thinking player action. It also escalates in an interesting way, as the machine adds more elements.
    But the one-button controller and difficulty in describing its mechanics very well certainly didn't work in its favour. Probably won't see it on GOG anytime soon, but I think I'm safe in saying it's certainly a welcome surprise for any Lucasarts enthusiast.
    Fortunately its mechanics of "remember to do these steps in a certain order, and do them quickly" has been done to better effect in games like Papers, Please, and it wouldn't hurt to see more games like this in the future, maybe even one with a similar premise to this.

    The human eye - on average - can easily detect the difference in smoothness between 30 and 60fps. Most people can't tell the difference above 60, but I am one of those who can, and I run my stuff at 144hz. When a game or video runs lower than the refresh rate of the screen displaying it (99% of the time 60hz, 50hz for PAL) there can be noticeable stutter and a weird time-shifting effect. This is not apparent to everyone, it depends on how your eyes and visual cortex perceive things. It also is not apparent on every game - it is most apparent in fast-paced FPS games (think Quake 3, TF2, CS:S, etc.). Some games, such as Oblivion, Skyrim, many RTS games, and so on are relatively smooth feeling at 30-40fps even for someone like me, though of course I can still tell the difference when it is higher, and prefer it. The really important bit is that the framerate stay consistent - it's better to have something run at 30fps constantly than jutter between 60 and 30 and in between. I agree with you on your point about Mario Kart 8 having 30fps for 4-player split-screen being fine. It's not optimal, but it's reasonable and understandable and certainly should be playable for that sort of game. However, it is a bit biased/egotistical to think that needing/wanting a framerate much higher is useless, just because your eyes/brain might not care - some of us perceive things in such a way that it really is much nicer for us when the framerates are higher.

    Actually Gabe, records have a demonstrably higher sound quality than CDs. Analogue (Vinyl) captures waveforms in a far more complete state while digital (CDs) simply captures samples that replicate the waveforms as best it can.
    CDs won due to being convenient rather than actually being the superior product. This is why there's still plenty of modern band that continue to release albums on vinyl.

    Vinyls sound better than CDs because you can't master them as loud and with as much distortion as you can with digital; a severely hot signal will make the needle jump off the record while you can get away with shipping a square wave on a disc and the public will be none the wiser.

    • @GalanDun
      @GalanDun 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, too hot a signal will punch through the vinyl, which also brings up the fact that vinyl records have less dynamic range than a CD does.

      Lord North FPS does effect gameplay! I would prefer 60fps the whole time but in some single player games less isn't so much of an issue (though still sucks), however in multiplayer shooters it makes a huge difference as you have a higher response time. Below 60 feels like my mouse is in soup.

      Lord North What I do think is unacceptable though is PC games/ports that are locked at 30fps, that is what I have a problem with. Generally if people can't run at 60fps then its normally because of their hardware or poor optimisation on belhalf of the devs.

      Any sort of "programming" style game is probably similar even if it doesn't quite look similar to Night Shift. SpaceChem seems to be a more modern example, and I'm sure others exist but most of the ones I recall I only do so hazily as it seems they existed more in the past compared to nowadays. There are also many puzzle games involving a precise series of steps, a la LEGO Junkbot or The Incredible Machine, though those might be a stretch for fitting in whatever genre Night Shit is.

      The reason why having as many FPS as possible is truth is because games aren't films. The less FPS you have, the less responsive a game feels. And guess what, this is one of those things that distinguish games from films, the interactivity.

    Why would they make such a horrible, headache inducing loading screen?

    • @FuriKitten
      @FuriKitten 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      it was a simple way of doing a loading progress, the tape input could be simply dumped directly to the raster during loading.
      I believe by not having the screen display and custom loaders could get a quicker load, other companies had maybe just a single flashing line or just a simple loading message, and mini games etc. also some loaders used the VIC2 chip to process some of the tape data to squeeze a quicker loading time.
      It became quite common, it didn't really matter on the CBMs because of the digital "Datacettes" but on 8bits that utilised portable taperecorders they were required so you could set the volume and see that the machine was actually loading the data.
      on Speccies (ZX spectrums) you needed to sometimes stop the tape between levels or segments of game play so the output was required, the CBMs had motor control so were pretty immune to this. you actually got used to them in the same way that when working at an ISP I could tell modem protocol errors in handshaking.

    Grand solution for the whole framerate "debate": Just stop capping the fucking thing and let it run as it runs for fuck's sake. In many years of playing games from the NES to the Xbox 360, from Doom and Duke 3D (DOS shareware) on Win95 and shit like the 3D era Army Men and Rainbow Six games at 3-20 FPS on a Win98 machine to only having framerate issues with shitty ports (GTA IV) and incredibly demanding titles (Crysis 3 with AA other than FXAA, Arma 3), that is what I've found to be the best feeling, best running solution.
    Stop capping the damn thing and let the system run what it runs. Console or PC, just do it.
    Unless it's Skyrim, because apparently their shitty physics engine spazzes out all the time if you run over 60FPS.

    • @Sodaholic6502
      @Sodaholic6502 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. Even in the case of games where the mechanics are tied in with a particular framerate (Doom is tied in with 35fps due to 70hz monitor mode), you can always perform motion interpolation. Run the game mechanics at their native rate, render as fast as possible while "filling in the blanks" so to speak. Most modern Doom ports do this (fan-made, most official rereleases never bother because modern id is lazy).

    • @skullz291
      @skullz291 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, you can't do that for every game, because some games link together framerate and updates. Doubling the framerate on certain games would literally double the speed of the game. This is why lots of, for instance, N64 games have "slowdown," because slowing of the FPS causes literally the rest of the game to slow down.
      Dark Souls, for instances, relies on frame data. If you force Dark Souls to be 60fps, the hit detection doesn't work right, and you will, for instance, fall right through the floor while sliding down a ladder.
      Games are built differently, you can't just force them all to be the same.

    • @mobucks555
      @mobucks555 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cap demanding games at 30fps. On my rig, I can run almost any game but the extra frames just heat up the GPU and raise the fan speed which becomes audible and annoying. The only type of game I'll run uncapped is a racing sim.

    • @chkbrk
      @chkbrk 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** That's the fault of companies designing their games around a hard-coded framerate cap.Solution: write better code.
      It's like choosing to implement an efficient, advanced sorting algorithm over insisting on keeping with some awful brute-force approach, if you catch the meaning behind my patented metaphors-nobody-gets-but-me.
      Let's not forget Dark Souls is a generally shit port that can't even be bothered to update button prompts to display anything but the xbox button shortcuts, *even if the player has no controller, and is using the keyboard and mouse to play*. Not to mention the need for a third party mod to actually render at anything but 1280x720... or another mod to make mouse movement work better.
      On the developer's side, my suggestion is more of a "for the future" idea; not so much for "fix your existing shit".

    So according to some of the genius people in the comment section, even 1 FPS is a-okay as long as the game looks pretty.
    high fps isn't just about how smooth something looks but how the fucking game feels, the lower the FPS the more handicaped you'll get.
    Christ i remember playing GTA 4 back when i still owned a 360 and that game would go under even 20 FPS in some cases and during those moment it felt like i was playing a slow mo version of the game with a 200MS delay on my controlls.
    Developers need to stop sacrificing frame rate for more pretty graphics, i want my games to play well, not run like ass.

    • @skullz291
      @skullz291 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand where you're coming from generally, but the difference between 30 and 60 fps is the difference between about 16ms per frame and about 33 ms per frame.
      Considering that it takes anywhere from 70-90ms for your eyes to even register that something just occurred, you're talking about 6 frames versus 3 frames at any given moment (assuming, of course, that mechanics and game updates are linked, and they're usually not).
      That difference is fucking tiny in terms of player performance. It may not look as nice, that's true, but it almost certainly isn't noticeable in terms of player inputs. Not until it drops below 30 or even 20.

      Umm, how exactly? If you run it slower it will just run slower, animations are less smooth and input lag is bigger. That's all the difference there is. All of it.
      The games with less fps tend to look better becouse it's graphic quality that tanks the most on your hardware. If a developer wants lots and lots of polygons or a bucket of shaders he ends up with less fps. So it's not lowering fps that makes the game look better, but it's making a better looking game that makes fps be less.
      Is it good or bad? Can't say. In action-focused games i preffer things to run smooth, but if i dont need much reflex to be good at a game, I can take the 30fps count for some nicer graphics. As long as it's not going to burn my GPU.

It was only a matter of time before Mr. Fedora decided to swoop in, tipping himself at every one of his m'ladies, claiming that all religion is false while standing on a razor's edge, because no one has heard opinions quite as daring as his. Oh, Mr. Fedora, how chivalrous you are. Maybe one day your supposed intellect will rub off on me, but as of this moment, you fail to be anything but child desperate for attention, to the point of criticizing others because they don't think how you think, in my eyes.

    Yahtzee, the FPS thing is not a matter of opinion or taste. It's undeniable fact that 30fps looks worse than 60, and it's easily noticed. Literally look at any comparison between the two. If you can't see a difference, something is very wrong with your eyes.

      Ehhh.. I think that the majority of difference is the programs that are running. Like if I'm playing Skyrim at 30 vs 60, there's a pretty noticeable difference. Or are you saying its noticeable regardless of the inherent quality of what's being played?

      It depends more on what your system can handle. Consoles often can't handle full resolution at 60 fps, so they use 30 fps to allow the processor to output higher definition, resulting in better overall visuals.
      That said, if a PC game throttles frame rate to 30, then either the developer or publisher is an asshole. These days, you cannot make a game that a mid-high end PC cannot handle. It is a hazard of being a PC gamer that you have to watch out for high requirements if you are using a compy more than 3-5 years old. Consoles don't have to deal with that, which combined with average price are the only advantages they maintain.

    Pretty sure it was Raymond Scott who did Powerhouse but this game is very much in need of it.

      But is looking better always better? Would you like your pixel art crisp or with a blurrer which makes it look nicer hm? DO you even watch the video? XD

    • @zgillet
      @zgillet 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I do. I've seen all their videos. I even used "full stop" for their benefit because it is a British idiom. BTW "Is looking better always better" ......really? Pixel art looks bad with a blurrer because it is a BLURRER.

    With the Sims 4. The non slug baby, and fully customisable pools, are 2 of the primary user mods and wants for Sims in general.
    So a person based in reality would say that EA is being business savvy by selling these as later priced extras, as they know that this cash cow will make a fortune regardless of how hard they reach their unlubricated arm up the already prolapsed anus of Sims fans.
    Now let's see how much they kill the modding and user generated content scene, it wouldn't surprise me if they introduce a shopfront to sell user generated content, (with EA/Maxis naming the price and cut) or even a priced SDK expansion pack.

    I kind of want to see Gabe end up in a situation where he needs to play this game really well for a cash prize or to save a life, like in some kind of dramatic movie moment.

    Thankfully, Star Wars 7 will not have Roberto Orci anywhere near it. Lawrence Kasdan, one of the guys responsible for Empire Strikes Back, is in it as a co-screenwriter. I'm actually moderately hopeful that they won't screw this up.
