  • WHICH BATTERY TERMINAL TO DISCONNECT FIRST | CONNECT FIRST
    ► Our Website: mechaniclifesty...
    Hey guys, here is a video that we made on which battery post to disconnect first and which battery post to connect first. We did not pay much attention and we burnt the abs module on a BMW because we disconnected them the wrong way and we touched the positive terminal to the body of the car. Since then we learnt our lesson. It is very important to disconnect and connect the battery terminals in the correct order you you might fry some computers in your car.

      Thank you for the video. I have replaced so many batteries myself but for some reason every time I go to remove it and then reinstall one I always forget which order comes first.
      The funny part about that is, I can never remember the order on that, but I can change my husbands spark plugs, wires and coils. Lol!

    Also, an easy way to remember it is ....think "alphabetical order".
    A,B,C,D,.....L, M, N, O, P, Q....
    N comes before P, therefore
    (N)egative comes before
    (P)ositive. 😃
    God bless you all.

    One thing not mentioned is when connecting the battery back up after attaching the positive cable, you will see a small spark when connecting the negative cable but it is normal and nothing to worry about.

    Thank you for the helpful videos. When jumping a car, I use the same sequence. I first connect the positive jumper cable to the positive terminal of the battery and then connect the negative cable (to a metal part on the metal car chassis, not the negative battery terminal). When I remove the jumper cable, I remove the negative cable first, then remove the positive cable last.

    How I remember: Removing clamps means (N)o Power = (N)egative first. Replacing clamps is (P)ower back oN = (P)ositive back first.

    Good evening sir hope your day is going well! I have an INNOVA 3300 and wanted to set it on DC10A to then proceed using red and black leads to probe pin 30 & 87 on starter relay to crank the 2003 DODGE CARAVAN SE. Is it possible for me to do that? Cause I'm on my own and I have nobody to crank the vehicle for me. I purchased a 12v remote starter switch from harbor freight and using it the first time it broke on me. I don't have a jumper wire and I don't have a fused jumper wire either all I have is the INNOVA 3300.

      If you mistakenly removed the positive first, go ahead and remove the negative before going any further. This will get you to where you need to be (Negative removed). Then, when you reconnect the battery, connect the positive first (negative is still not connected). Once the positive is connected, it's safe to connect the negative cable last.

    But this doesn’t make sense as to why you would disconnect the negative first. As I remember back in the good old school days, if you want to stop power going into things you would unplug the power source at which its drawing power from. Like a light bulb to a lamp socket, would you unplug it from the wall or loosen it from the socket. Or like an air compressor, would you decompress first then unplug? So it just doesn’t make sense for any battery wether car or for your mobile phone, a positive terminal will still have an active charge but it would just need to be grounded to send that charge. 🧐🤔

    • @ridwan9610
      @ridwan9610 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's to prevent short circuit, when opening the positive first if your metal tool touches any metal car parts then short circuit happens.

    • @NoNames-vw3bq
      @NoNames-vw3bq 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's why they're removing the grounding first, so the charge isn't sent/circuit isn't complete.

    • @SgfGustafsson
      @SgfGustafsson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When the negative is connected the whole car is grounded. This means that if you are taking the positive connection off first and your metal tool touches a grounded chassis/component, you will be shocked as the power flows through your tool to ground. Bad for you and the car with modern electronics.
