Sattler’s criticism of the poisonous plants being allowed because they look cool is something they took from the book.

This is one of the rare movies I wish I could see for the first time again and again. Amazing movie and had major impact on visuals in movies moving forward.

Just on the part about the size of the raptors, compared to their real-world counterparts: there's a bit of a story there.
    - The raptors are actually written oversized in the book too, it wasn't just for the film.
    - For the book, Crichton had been inspired by the discovery of bones from a large dromaeosaurid ("raptor"), which many years later would be named Achillobator. But at the time, there was a theory that most of the known "raptors" were all species of Velociraptor - and as this big animal was found in the same region as Velociraptor, the assumption was that this would be another Velociraptor. The theory didn't last past the '80s, but that's a common trend in Crichton's writing. He was looking at controversial, cutting-edge research, and that sort of thing often just doesn't stand up in the long run. For another example, Tyrannosaurus' "visual acuity based on movement" was inspired by early CT scans of the braincase which appeared to show similar structures to an amphibian, but today we know it had one of the most formidable batteries of senses of anything that's ever walked on dry land.
    - By the time the film was being made, the Velociraptor synonymisation theory was history. They thought about making them Deinonychus, a jaguar-sized raptor from North America (and the one every kid on the playground knew about in the early '90s: the discovery of Deinonychus triggered the 'dinosaur renaissance', without which Jurassic Park would not exist). But Spielberg thought 'Velociraptor' sounded cooler, so they stuck to plan A even though it was no longer supported by the science. The film's raptors are pretty much exactly the right size for Achillobator, however.
    - Funnily enough, an even larger dromaeosaur was discovered *the year after the film came out*. Utahraptor was about the weight of a polar bear. More recently we've also discovered Dakotaraptor, which had a more agile build and inhabited the same ecosystems as Tyrannosaurus. However they were more bird-like than depicted in the film, with wings and feathers.

James Cameron wanted to make it as a film, but was told by Michael Crichton that Spielberg had just bought the rights. Cameron later said to Spielberg he's pleased he did it, as he said he would have done it as a bloody R-rated Aliens style movie.

I was already a dinosaur kid when it came out, and at age 7 I saw Jurassic Park at a drive in theater while on vacation. It was my first video tape and my first audio cassette, and turned me on to Spielberg and especially John Williams for life. Now that I'm a grown ass man I have such an appreciation for it on so many levels, but I still don't really understand all the hate for The Lost World. Maybe I just have an inherent Postlethwaite bias. Great commentary, guys!

Lost World still gets an above average rating from me. Obviously not as good as the original (nothing ever will be) but as a sequel it is perfectly serviceable. I’d pick it over any of the new ones without a second thought.

I agree. Love the original of course, but I would gladly follow it up on a Saturday night with the Lost World. May not be great, but it's pretty darn good.

Jurassic park is a classic. I remember going to Universal florida, and being so gutted that the Jurassic park ride was shut as it was being refurbished into the crappy Jurassic world. Sad times.
    Great film though.

49:50 Hey, that's exactly where I saw it. They had just got DTS installed but I walked in not even knowing what DTS was so when the logo sequence with sound effects for DTS came up with all that surround sound going on at huge volumes I was suddenly sat up in my seat thinking oh wow. I was on the front row too, it was so immersive. 3rd in my best ever cinema experiences, Aliens being the top with my 1977 Star Wars experience being 2.

A side thought, I would love to see an animated Jurassic Park and Lost World which were faithful to the novels , characters included. I don't know if it would be better to use the OG cast's likenesses and voices (but with novel faithful personalities), or recast. Any thoughts on that?

I think Netflix or Amzon should make a series just following the first novel. There is so much there that could easily fill a 8-10 episode series and not be at all boring!

A theme park is possibly coming, we already have the animals to do it with. The thought is to change the DNA folding in various birds, like chickens, and bring back the past that way. If they can figure out such a thing as a DNA timeline than they will be able to get the correct ones to fold, than voila, you have Deinonychus. If they get good enough to figure out the split offs, which is doubtful, then they might be able to figure out how to get T-Rex out of it.

The injured/dying dinosaur from Jurassic World was an Apatoasaurus, not Brachiosaurus, which is the reason it looked smaller (it’s a different dinosaur altogether).

Oliver you were talking about miniatures and special effects Blade runner 2049 feels so special because weta workshop in new Zealand did the miniatures for the city. Other examples is the city of New York in the fifth element. Still looks amazing due to a mixture of miniatures (or 8 foot models of buildings) being used nicely with cgi. That’s when it works.

I was born in Costa Rica and went to the theater to watch the movie when it came out, but one of the worst parts was when they depicted the capital, San Jose, as literally some restaurant next to the sea.
Not only insulting but also quite ignorant as San Jose is a big city in a mountainous valley far from the coast.

Yeah - the book makes a lot of use out of the Costa Rican setting, but virtually none of it made it into the movie. Same goes for the sequels: when dinosaurs do make it to the mainland, it's the US of A, not the jungles of Puntarenas.
Then again, this is the same Steven Spielberg who wanted to make a Harry Potter with cheerleaders and Haley Joel Osment.
