How to unlock BIOS Supervisor Password from Lenovo Thinkpad Laptop (no damage to laptop)

  • I demonstrate how to remove/clear BIOS supervisor password from lenovo thinkpad laptops. I have tested this method repeatedly to clear supervisor password of my personal thinkpad W520 and W510. I have been using these laptop since, with absolutely no problem.
Theoretically, this method should work most of the Lenovo laptops. All you need to do is to find the location of EEPROM chip on your laptop (You can google it !).

Should be mentioned somewhere that this only works with 30-series laptops and older (T530/T430/L530/L430/X230/etc.). On newer models (40-series and newer) Lenovo changed the way the passwords are stored and doesn't use the extra EEPROM anymore.
For EEPROM locations check this forum post: www.allservice.ro/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3521#3521

i was able to unlock x61s. it took 3 attempts. during the last one i shorted the pins before powering up the laptop and tapped on F1 multiple times. i navigated to the "supervisor password - disabled" entry, hit Enter, released the pins and pressed Enter two more times (password and confirmation), then saved and restarted. it worked.

Thank you so much for the video!I have recently removed the supervisor password from Thinkpad models T61, T61p, T400 and R500 by using this method.I used an external monitor and a keyboard (along with the laptop's own keyboard, as it is needed to turn the laptop on). Hi, I was struggling last night with my T400, managed to boot to BIOS but could not modify anything. Were you just shorting these two pins with screwdriver?
      Any grounding needed?
Just after shorting the pins, Did you have to press F1 to initiate booting to BIOS? Or does it start booting BIOS by itself after you shirt the pins? I'd appreciate some advise.

@@zgagacz I don't remember the whole procedure that I did, but with the T400, according to my notes, I 1) booted the computer 2) pressed the F1 button 3) shorted the pins only AFTER the BIOS asked for the password.

Thanks so much for this video! I purchased a msata drive to find out my BIOS was locked and I could not change boot order. After watching this video I was able to reset the supervisor password on my T520 that I had purchased online. Note to anyone attempting this. 1. Press power button.
    2. When the ThinkPad logo show, press F1.
    3. Look at the processing symbol (The cylinder with an arrow)
    4. When it flashes the last time before the lock usually appears, short the two middle pins on the right side of the U53 chip.
    5. This got me into the bios.
    6. I released the short at this point.
    7. All the password settings were disabled, and i could not change anything.
    8. Press F10, and windows loaded right up.
I switched it off and on to see if the changes remained and they did.

    • @DCandVision
      @DCandVision 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, I shorted the middle pins. You could try to short it everytime the symbol flashes once, this will stop the processing symbol, so you have to let it go again, wait for an other flash, and repeat this. To make sure you short it at the right time.
The pins on the same side those red wires are connected in the picture, but instead of the two on the bottom, i did the two in the middle.

The above method, which I doubted will work, worked on my Thinkpad X201 . After googling, I came to the conclusion that the EEPROM for the X201Tablet version is in the same location. When you search online, the wrong documentation will point you to two very tiny holes on the motherboard to be the EEPROM location which if you are trying the above method, it is impossible and won't work. It might be the right one if you programme the EEPROM . To short EEPROM, its on the back side of the motherboard near the CPU/Heatsink. You gotta listen to the instructions word for word in order to achieve the result you are hoping for. I never thought this would work but I can confirm that it worked like a charm. Another video, on TH-cam suggested that you take out the CMOS battery and that was what I had initially done and it put me in a greater problem as the computer won't boot at all due to the Date/Time Error. Thanks for this beautiful video - a vitally beautiful video for my Thinkpad.

But for Lenovo x200, it's impossible to reach the read mode. When you tape a wrong password, it blocked and that's all.
Do you know what to do ? I have moved the CMOS battery for 1, 5 or 10 minutes and it's same thing. Don't reach my Read mode or my Os.

am trying to buy a W520 and the seller indicates that it has some kind of lock (supervisor in bios?) and cannot boot from hard drive - anyway there is not one - but boots only from usb. Read some information about the eeprom chip and wanted to ask what are the odds in my case. The price is low enough to buy it for parts, excluding the mb, but i want to make use of the laptop.
