One thing I learnt from every race in 2019 so far : Whenever Toto Wolff says that Ferrari are faster than the Mercedes ...it goes completely different in the main race .......
Ferrari never had a chance to begin with, their car is too slow, even more so than 2018. Maybe slightly better than Red Bull but nowhere the realm of Mercedes.

The car in this quali was pretty much on par and arguably better in Bahrain. It's reliability and the fact that drivers and strategists are constantly doing mistakes.

Mercedes would have never been on front row if Leclerc hadn't crashed. they both had a toe from a driver in front which is what brought them back on the straights. the sector times confirmed this
Max ime that will not work out in a street circuit like Baku which is having very long straight and they know ferrari is having the strongest car. Looks like Ferrari is is saving their car for second half of the season by not cranking it up like last year as they have failed miserably in second half of the season!!! They really have reliability issues if they put their car on full beast mode.

Well they do have a lot of pace it is just that they do not know how to use it effectively. Also Ferrari and Merc have their engines tuned differently. The practice modes for the Ferrari have higher power than the Mercs.
@Ferrari Fan how is hiding your advantage unfair to every other team? Mercedes not running a higher engine mode more often saves their engine. Renault and now Honda finally seems to have a decent Qualy mode as well. Everyone should know by now that Mercedes have a good engine. For the past 3 or so years of testing their focus has been on engine reliability and tire testing and then after the summer break or there about when they think they finally understand fully how to setup the car, introduce a new spec engine that is even faster.

@Ferrari Fan Nah not arguing..just having a discussion. The Ferrari being fastest narrative came out of winter testing as the Ferrari looked more planted and fast out of the gate compared to last year. That was observed by everyone and even Seb stated it was doing what he wanted it to do and respond to setup changes. The Merc however was all over the place and did not get better until they brought the B-Spec car that we see now but it still harder to drive than the Ferrari and only match Ferrari's fastest time on the last day but as most fans should know you never can pay too much attention to testing despite what the media pushes. In the first race in Australia everyone expected Ferrari to do well but Mercs were considerably faster and the circuit showed up the first issue with the Ferrari design in that it does not have enough overall downforce for slow corners plus it seems they had their engine turned down for reliability reasons...I don't believe Ferrari ever confirmed this but Seb's question "Why are we so slow?" indicates that he was expecting more performance from the car. In Bahrain the GPS data showed that Ferrari had the fastest car at the top end and were fairly even throughout the corners an EVERY team was saying they were the fastest and they qualified 1,2 and should have won the race but we know what happened there. However after qualifying Toto said that Mercedes would have to look at how they could get more time on the straights and would have to look at drag etc. By the time China came around which is more normal track than the first two but still have a big straight all the teams realised Ferrari would have the advantage in the straight but Mercedes in the corners and no one could really tell which philosophy would win but Ferrari brought and new rear wing to increase downforce and Mercedes brought a new front wing to reduce drag. Both upgrades did the job but Mercedes were just quicker in the corners and hence won. For today's qualifying due to the straight I expected Ferrari to be Fastest in Qualifying based on how practice has gone. Similar to Bahrain in fact except I think Mercedes is going to be faster in race trim and they did not seem as downbeat as they were in Bahrain because of that. Everyone was expecting Charles to take Pole based on Free practice and the History he has here. Charles expected it, Nico Rosberg expected it on his channel and commentators who are close to the action expected it as well but it was not to be. Ferrari brought their Barcelona updates forward to help with downforce and a new rear wing which is bigger than most for this track but have as much top end speed as teams with as smaller rear wing. In summary I would say that Ferrari has the car with the most powerful engine and don't have the fastest car yet because of having too little downforce overall. If they had maximized their chances they would have a 1,2 in Bahrain and a 3,4 in China and should be looking to a 1,2 tomorrow which would have put them on equal footing with Mercedes who are just about now getting to understand fully their car. So I would say they have the joint fastest car with Mercedes. It is just that Mercedes maximizes their chances and hence are the fastest team at the moment.
@Ferrari Fan I think it is their way a keeping their eye on the prize and trying to throw the opposition off while maintaining a good corporate image. For example when they say "Ferrari are quicker but we expect it to be close" means to me they are about 2 tenths ahead. If they say "Ferrari are about 5 tenths ahead" and look worried to me that means that they will beat us in Qualifying by about 3 tenths but more importantly we don't have a better race pace. If they say the same thing but don't look worried like today that means they may beat us in qualifying but we have better race pace. Even in 2016 - 2017 when no one was close to them they wold not come out and state the obvious that they are quicker and no one would beat us. They would say "We will have a good race and try to finish" or "This track is tricky so we have to be careful to finish and avoid issues" you know stuff like that.

To people who complain about merc and Hamilton always lying about their pace: they really were around 3 tenths [effectively] slower on Friday, and they found that pace. How come, when other drivers do well/badly you people always show support, but if Hamilton does well, you complain, and if he does badly, then you criticise him and praise the other guys for being fast.

1. Way more exciting than the entire Chinese GP.
2. Baku is still living up to its chaotic weekends.
3. Vettel is still leagues better than LeClerc

It seems more romantic of a story if you ‘come from behind’ and get a better result. I wonder how much longer people will keep believing Mercedes are “slower”. Mercedes are the masters of deflection and the most analytical team. Both Lewis and Toto deploy this tactic.

Looks like Ferrari is is saving their car for second half of the season by not cranking it up like last year as they have failed miserably in second half of the season!!! They really have reliability issues if they put their car on full beast mode.

Well they do have a lot of pace it is just that they do not know how to use it effectively. Also Ferrari and Merc have their engines tuned differently. The practice modes for the Ferrari have higher power than the Mercs.
@Ferrari Fan how is hiding your advantage unfair to every other team? Mercedes not running a higher engine mode more often saves their engine. Renault and now Honda finally seems to have a decent Qualy mode as well. Everyone should know by now that Mercedes have a good engine. For the past 3 or so years of testing their focus has been on engine reliability and tire testing and then after the summer break or there about when they think they finally understand fully how to setup the car, introduce a new spec engine that is even faster.

@Ferrari Fan Nah not arguing..just having a discussion. The Ferrari being fastest narrative came out of winter testing as the Ferrari looked more planted and fast out of the gate compared to last year. That was observed by everyone and even Seb stated it was doing what he wanted it to do and respond to setup changes.
The Merc however was all over the place and did not get better until they brought the B-Spec car that we see now but it still harder to drive than the Ferrari and only match Ferrari's fastest time on the last day but as most fans should know you never can pay too much attention to testing despite what the media pushes.
In the first race in Australia everyone expected Ferrari to do well but Mercs were considerably faster and the circuit showed up the first issue with the Ferrari design in that it does not have enough overall downforce for slow corners plus it seems they had their engine turned down for reliability reasons...I don't believe Ferrari ever confirmed this but Seb's question "Why are we so slow?" indicates that he was expecting more performance from the car.
In Bahrain the GPS data showed that Ferrari had the fastest car at the top end and were fairly even throughout the corners an EVERY team was saying they were the fastest and they qualified 1,2 and should have won the race but we know what happened there. However after qualifying Toto said that Mercedes would have to look at how they could get more time on the straights and would have to look at drag etc.
By the time China came around which is more normal track than the first two but still have a big straight all the teams realised Ferrari would have the advantage in the straight but Mercedes in the corners and no one could really tell which philosophy would win but Ferrari brought and new rear wing to increase downforce and Mercedes brought a new front wing to reduce drag. Both upgrades did the job but Mercedes were just quicker in the corners and hence won.
For today's qualifying due to the straight I expected Ferrari to be Fastest in Qualifying based on how practice has gone. Similar to Bahrain in fact except I think Mercedes is going to be faster in race trim and they did not seem as downbeat as they were in Bahrain because of that.
Everyone was expecting Charles to take Pole based on Free practice and the History he has here. Charles expected it, Nico Rosberg expected it on his channel and commentators who are close to the action expected it as well but it was not to be.
Ferrari brought their Barcelona updates forward to help with downforce and a new rear wing which is bigger than most for this track but have as much top end speed as teams with as smaller rear wing.
In summary I would say that Ferrari has the car with the most powerful engine and don't have the fastest car yet because of having too little downforce overall. If they had maximized their chances they would have a 1,2 in Bahrain and a 3,4 in China and should be looking to a 1,2 tomorrow which would have put them on equal footing with Mercedes who are just about now getting to understand fully their car. So I would say they have the joint fastest car with Mercedes. It is just that Mercedes maximizes their chances and hence are the fastest team at the moment.
@Ferrari Fan I think it is their way a keeping their eye on the prize and trying to throw the opposition off while maintaining a good corporate image. For example when they say "Ferrari are quicker but we expect it to be close" means to me they are about 2 tenths ahead. If they say "Ferrari are about 5 tenths ahead" and look worried to me that means that they will beat us in Qualifying by about 3 tenths but more importantly we don't have a better race pace. If they say the same thing but don't look worried like today that means they may beat us in qualifying but we have better race pace.
Even in 2016 - 2017 when no one was close to them they wold not come out and state the obvious that they are quicker and no one would beat us. They would say "We will have a good race and try to finish" or "This track is tricky so we have to be careful to finish and avoid issues" you know stuff like that.

To people who complain about merc and Hamilton always lying about their pace:
they really were around 3 tenths [effectively] slower on Friday, and they found that pace. How come, when other drivers do well/badly you people always show support, but if Hamilton does well, you complain, and if he does badly, then you criticise him and praise the other guys for being fast.
