Korean (and Japanese, and many other languages) has a three-way distinction: "여기" means "close to the speaker", "거기" means "close to the listener", and "저기" means "away from both the speaker and the listener." It means "a place you have already mentioned, or a particular place where is currently talked." "I'm going '거기' now.(나 지금 거기 갈게)" means "I'm coming to you now." but it also means: "I'm going there I mentioned." Both uses are commonly used, and most Koreans would not have been able to distinguish them as they use them without recognition. Josh and Gabie were probably more confused because they talked without knowing that there were two uses.

I teach Korean and this is always so much fun to explain! When an object is close to the person you are talking to, the listener, then you call it 그거 [geu-geo] but when the object is away from both yourself and the listener, you call it 저거 [jeo-geo]. But if the object is not in physical sight, then you call it 그거 [geu-geo] which could sound contradictory. I can't believe Josh didn't know this cause his Korean is perfect!🤣
OMG GABIE, this opened my eyes why Koreans are so much more aware of level of subjectivity.. Cause I had to learn that other people literally don’t think about the perspective of others in regard to changing the language you use. This is totally a Korean thing and I JUST figured out why some people have such a hard time understanding me, even while speaking English, the mind is Korean. But I also get why Josh is having a hard time understanding this concept because he’s looking at it objectively, the cup didn’t move at all… but we aren’t talking about where the cup is, we are talking about how to help (friend) find it in reference to where SHE is, not where YOU are. Same as Japanese’s あそこ “asoko” = 저기 (there - far) そこ “soko” = 거기 (there - close) ここ “koko” = 여기 (here) It depends on where she is standing. Your position doesn’t matter. It’s her position and the item. (You direct her from HER position/perspective) As a Japanese, learning Korean, I didn’t have that much difficulties since we have similar grammar. But it’s genuinely interesting to see where the foreigners struggle.

All the switches between Korean and English really makes me want to learn, but as I'm studying French at a near advanced level and beginner Japanese, I worry about stressing my brain out with another non-western language xD. @Ray Yule I wouldn't say it's too British, wouldn't say so American either since he still pronounces most of the words with letter a British. But it's definitely less British sounding without the er endings like you said. I also noticed that when he speaks with a non English speaker and it amazes me tbh how he could slightly change his accent.
@@la381 no one is saying he’s not british lol. A lot of people can change their accents no matter how much they got used to their original accents. Have you not seen english actors acting using an american accent? Tbh american accent is one of the easiest accents to learn especially if you are surrounded by a lot of people who has that accent. Josh has a lot of american friends aswell so I’m guessing he picks it up. Even I can do an american accent. No one is saying he doesn’t have his english accent anymore. What we’re saying is he sounds less english when he’s with other people who doesn’t have the english accent. May it be intentional or not but we just find it cool lol.

Watching some older Jolly vids Josh mentioned his accent when talking in Gabbies vids he has this different accent when talking English. He wasn't lying lol, like a mix of so many accents rolled in to one.

그런데 영어로 이걸 번역하면... 상당히 멀리 있는 것처럼 느껴지죠 ㅋㅋ 왜냐! 그거를 보는 사람의 시선에서 그것의 물건 위치는 머니까요!ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
조쉬님이 설명한 물건의 거리는 말하는 상대에게 맞춰진 설명이었고,
가비님이 물건의 거리를 설명한... 하지만 자신도 계속 본능에 의존해 사용해와서 잘은 모르지만 그렇게 된다는 것만 아시는 듯 하지만 어쨌든 그거인 상태 ㅋㅋㅋ
한국어는 나를 대신해서 움직여주는 상대의 입장에서 설명이 가능하게 끔 말한 것이고(상대가 좀 더 쉽게 알아 듣길 바래서? 배려해서?), 영어는 스피커 입장에서의 거리를 말한 것임.
사실 같은 모국어 사용자라면 헷갈리지 않지만, 서로 완전히 다른 대화체를 사용하는 국가일수록 이런 차이가 극명하죠..

"There" can be different for the litsener sometimes when they are how long have distance to the object. As the speaker of view, that object is same but if the finder or litsener is closer than speaker, then it will change "there". 저기 to "(t)here" 거기 (여기).

I teach Korean and this is always so much fun to explain! When an object is close to the person you are talking to, the listener, then you call it 그거 [geu-geo] but when the object is away from both yourself and the listener, you call it 저거 [jeo-geo]. But if the object is not in physical sight, then you call it 그거 [geu-geo] which could sound contradictory. I can't believe Josh didn't know this cause his Korean is perfect!🤣
OMG GABIE, this opened my eyes why Koreans are so much more aware of level of subjectivity.. Cause I had to learn that other people literally don’t think about the perspective of others in regard to changing the language you use. This is totally a Korean thing and I JUST figured out why some people have such a hard time understanding me, even while speaking English, the mind is Korean. But I also get why Josh is having a hard time understanding this concept because he’s looking at it objectively, the cup didn’t move at all… but we aren’t talking about where the cup is, we are talking about how to help (friend) find it in reference to where SHE is, not where YOU are. It’s all subjective to the people around, that’s why stuff changes when the situation changes. So funny.

거기 => 자신은 그곳에 없지만 상대는 그곳에 있을 때

As a Japanese, learning Korean, I didn’t have that much difficulties since we have similar grammar. But it’s genuinely interesting to see where the foreigners struggle.

I love learning about languages and hearing people teach each other about them. All the switches between Korean and English really makes me want to learn, but as I'm studying French at a near advanced level and beginner Japanese, I worry about stressing my brain out with another non-western language xD. It's also fun to me how in JOLLY/KoreanEnglishman videos, Josh's accent is very typical English, but in your videos, he has more of a Korean/English accent when speaking English.
This was a lovely episode and I love the explanation and distinction - language is wonderful and I've been learning so much from all of your channels :)

@Ray Yule I wouldn't say it's too British, wouldn't say so American either since he still pronounces most of the words with letter a British. But it's definitely less British sounding without the er endings like you said. I also noticed that when he speaks with a non English speaker and it amazes me tbh how he could slightly change his accent.
Umm.... he's British and so are his parents, so it's his British accent.
@@la381 no one is saying he’s not british lol. A lot of people can change their accents no matter how much they got used to their original accents. Have you not seen english actors acting using an american accent? Tbh american accent is one of the easiest accents to learn especially if you are surrounded by a lot of people who has that accent. Josh has a lot of american friends aswell so I’m guessing he picks it up. Even I can do an american accent. No one is saying he doesn’t have his english accent anymore. What we’re saying is he sounds less english when he’s with other people who doesn’t have the english accent. May it be intentional or not but we just find it cool lol.

표준국어대사전을 참조해봅시다 :
여기1「대명사」 「1」 '말하는 이에게' 가까운 곳을 가리키는 지시 대명사.
거기1「대명사」 「1」 '듣는 이에게' 가까운 곳을 가리키는 지시 대명사.
저기1「대명사」 말하는 이나 듣는 이로부터 멀리 있는 곳을 가리키는 지시 대명사.
그리고 '그거'(그것)는
「1」 듣는 이에게 가까이 있거나 듣는 이가 생각하고 있는 사물을 가리키는 지시 대명사.
「2」 앞에서 이미 이야기한 대상을 가리키는 지시 대명사.
따라서 6:29에서 조쉬님이 "(컵이) 저기에 있어"에서,

this is one of those things where you didn't realize you learned something incorrectly or without nuance when learning another language and then when someone more fluent than you tries to correct you, it makes no sense at all
