- Gold: A Journey with Idris Elba is a documentary film exploring the varied and often surprising ways in which gold has transformed our world.
In this clip, Idris visits visits the gold vaults in the Bank of England.
About World Gold Council
We're the global experts on gold. The content we post here ranges from investment insights and market trends, to responsible gold mining and gold's many uses in our world.
Interesting fact, none of the paper "money" we use these days is actually backed by gold...
Are you 7 yrs old? Bc everyone over 16 knows that little homie😂
That woman is not telling the whole truth
Get ready for a change.
The Bank of England note though still keeps the old promise to pay the bearer in gold coins even though it doesn't. If we did that it would be a fraud but when the Bank of England does it, it is overlooked. Idris Elba should have asked the chief cashier Sarah John what it is that she actually promises to pay the bearer with.
And narrated to me from (Imaam) Maalik (رحمه الله) that he had heard that Sukuk (claim cheques, receipts, IOU's) were given to people in the time of (the Umayyad Caliph) Marwan Ibn al-Hakam (رحمه الله) for the produce of the market at al-Jar. People bought and sold the Sukuk among themselves before they took delivery of the goods. Zayd bin Thabit and (Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنهما) one of the Companion's of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to Marwan Ibn al-Hakam and said: "Marwan! Do you make Riba' (Usury) Halal (lawful)?" He said: "I seek refuge with Allah! What is that?" He said: "These Suku which people buy and sell before they take delivery of the goods." Marwan therefore sent a guard to follow them and to take them from people's hands and return them to their owners.

Gold is money. Everything else is credit
Shame the UK doesn't have any left.
silver is good money too. obviously gold is king.
Bitcoin/monero is digital gold. Yes it's not real but name any other digital payment method that is not credit ledgers
@eekmeout silver is no longer money its too important as an industrial metal. Silver stackers fail to come to this conclusion
@ommanomnom bitcoin is a CURRENCY that can be used for transactions including cross boarder to bypass swift not a store of wealth its too volitile. Gold is a store of wealth. I have both gold and bitcoin so I'm not going down that rabbit hole but it's important to understand what it is and what it's function is. Gold is not a currency, bitcoin is. They are not the similar and never will be

Looks like it's more of India's gold 😂😂😂😂
And africa.
On May 7, 1999, the UK Treasury announced it would be selling over half of the nation's gold reserves. The move, made by then chancellor Gordon Brown, was done in a bid to diversify and strengthen Britain's reserves by reducing the proportion held in gold
Dead right, and after massive inflation.
The world’s stolen goods in one room. 😢
I find it amazing that so many people can't fathom the concept that not everything is stolen. For everything bad that happens, several good things also happen. This amount of money is a drop in the ocean, it's not even 1 month's worth of the UK's entire GDP and it's been 80 years of rebuilding everything that got completely destroyed during WW2. Can you not comprehend that people putting in work actually generates wealth? You know, there have been millions of Brits all toiling away for decades and centuries building what we have today. How dare you diminish the truth.
*If you are not in the financial market space right now, you are making a huge mistake. I understand that it could be due to ignorance, but if you want to make your money work for you...prevent inflation*
Interesting, This is superb! Information, as a noob it gets quite difficult to handle all of this and staying informed is a major cause, how do you go about this are you a pro Investor?
I feel Investors should exercise caution with their exposure and.exercise caution when considering new investments, particularly during periods of inflation. It is advisable to seek guidance from a professional or a licensed expert in order to navigate this recession and achieve potential high yields
Prioritizing effective personal finance management holds greater significance than the sheer amount saved, irrespective of income source. Consulting a certified financial advisor can offer tailored strategies to optimize financial results by reducing expenses and enhancing income, regardless of whether it's earned through employment or investments.
Brian Humphery Services was my hope during the 'bear summer' last year. I made so many mistakes but also learned so much from it, and of course from Brian.

Gordon Brown's ill-fated decision to sell off Britain's gold reserves in 1999 has cost the country £21 billion. The then-chancellor oversaw the sale of 401 tons of gold - more than half of the country's holding - 25 years ago this week in an attempt to diversify and strengthen Britain's reserves.
The Tories gave away double that money in government contracts to their mates by Whatsapp so I guess they are all into it.
Meh - that’s pocket change. The economic consequences of Brexit is costing Britain ≈ £100 billion every year.
The UK government sold all its gold years ago, so most of this is not the UKs It is from private people also the gold the UK still holds for other countries.
All hail Gordon brown for the error
The Bank of England and the city of London have nothing to do with the UK, the central bankers own all that. They’ve been robbing the people for generations.
Also each ounce of real gold belongs to multiple owners - it's called gold leasing.
It's around 10X it's value now as to when he sold it. Smart Politicians hey
They are starting to repatriate that gold back due to the sanctions and the inevitable failing US dollar.
Gold is the world's first form of modern currency.
No way are you serious????
You want a gold medal?
what's mind blowing is that Uk doesn't have a single Gold mine. but they have one of the largest holding as a country
Brought to you by it's past colonies
Wrong on both counts, impressive.
Gold sovereigns are not heavy and you can flip it. Even the 1 troy-ounce Britannia can be flipped.
In the 1960s you could buy them for under a fiver, now they cost around today's price 400 to 500 pounds. That's inflation.
Quote from Sara John "the problem with gold coins is they're actually quite heavy to carry around people would take their gold coins to a Goldsmith and the Goldsmith would issue them with a IOU, and people realized that actually easier to use those IOU's to pay for goods and services"🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Sorry Sara, it was not from the peasants 'bottom up' as you suggested, but from the elite paper currency printers 'Top down' to remove Gold & Silver money from the masses.... And it all comes from China.
It’s too bad the UK sold 395 Tonnes of gold for about $275 an ounce in the period 1999-2002 .
But the Bank of England is happy to hold other Countries’ gold.
I dont know, but I'm guessing they make some money of holding it.
Probably wasn't their best financial decision
It’s called the Brown Bottom, the gold price has done nothing but rise since Gordon Brown made that sale, possibly one of the worst financial decisions in our history, including putting Liz Truss in charge of the country.
Never mind. Everything is stolen goods from other countries 😼

@@briansymmes7917 it was a positive decision at the time in that gold had been historically under-performing and was paying no dividends to the Exchequer and the sale enabled the UK Government to pay off a substantial part of the national debt and keep repayment interest rates down on the remainder.

Thats the real money in there and theres not enough of it to back up the fake paper pounds.
There is if they revalue it up.
@UncalBertExcretes, You are right about that but Sarah John, the Chief Cashier, still promises to "pay the bearer on demand" which is very misleading. I was disappointed Idris Elba didn't ask her what she pays her promises with.
We don't have nowhere near enough gold reserves for the money printing. The real money is gold. Notes is a representation of a promise however they cannot fulfil that promise to everyone at the same time, so yes it's misleading. As money printing goes up, it will be misleading everyone more.
I love how he joked about stealing one at the end. 😅😅
There's a gift for making people smile. Thank you for sharing it.
according to the imf, an average human being in america makes approximately 1.7 million dollars in his lifetime...
that is about 17kg of gold or one of those gold bars.

As gold is about test all time highs, perfect video to get retail in. I'm currently long so this is great!!
suddenly idris elba looks like lupin trying to rob the vault
If I was in a vault like that, I’d bring my own gold coin, and film myself pretending to pick it up off the floor and putting it into my pocket 😂
You have an extraordinarily low threshold of entertainment
How is that funny? I'm pretty sure you're the only one laughing at your own joke
All of that belongs to country’s from around the world
Also interesting or rather suspicious there are absolutely no marks or stamps on the gold bars. Hope they have a record somewhere who it belongs to XD
850 billion pounds? Considering the UKs official gold reserves are 310 tonnes. I calculated thats worth about 24 billion dollars at todays gold prices, or did I count wrong? Interesting tho that they still hold foreign gold reserves maybe she added those in the number she said?
And nearly all of it all belongs to other countries e.g. Venezuela.
That is wild, imagine walking into a room filled with that much gold.

Hello from India 👋
They looted u 😂😂
OK here’s the thing … That door is over 70 years old. It’s out dated. It’s also Manual and is a Make that doesn’t have a very good reputation. I didn’t see any improvements either. So there must be a reason for that. Probably a vault within a vault. But again didn’t see any signs of that either. So the only other reason must be that the Vault is extremely deep underground. You cant tunnel , There is no quick in and out smash and Grab kind of robbery. But i did notice one very obvious thing that they haven’t thought of . There are Two ways of getting in . The 1st one is so overwhelmingly obvious that i have gone through this video for over a hour and yep they definitely haven’t seen it. 2nd One is to do with the Ceilings im sure there’s room above to crawl around and if thats true they need to alter it. There is a third but i think this mistake is just a one off due to his fame. Where is the guard escorts. And why is she not wearing a Tag and motion camera ?. That tracks where you are within the building. If this is not a one off and is the norm then the Bank of England need urgent action to update to modern technology and surveillance and Tracking . Just saying. For the 1st way in well here’s a hint .. If you cant get through the Door go around it.
Finally after 330 years someone has found a way into the BoE. Please record your adventure of a lifetime as it would make a great movie...

Idris Elba loves 'Behind the green door'. Does anyone know where I can get hold of that movie?
If you dont have it on hand, you don't own it. If you have the paper that says you own gold, you might find out the only thing you own is that paper.
Nice
why are the gold bars not stamped ?
If you ever made a bad financial decision this might cheer you up:
2.765.000.000 today - 395.000.000 1999= 2.761.050.000 the amount England lost (- the money they made through other investments which are probably way less.
approximately 395 tonnes
A total of approximately 395 tonnes of gold was sold at 17 auctions between July 1999 and March 2002, run by the Bank of England on the Treasury's behalf. The proceeds of the sales (around $3.5bn or £1.9bn) were reinvested in dollar, euro and yen interest-bearing assets which remained part of the reserves.
Value of gold bullion will always be precious

Great….but the Bank of England keeping printing more notes/ IOU’s than they have in gold which cause the purchase power of the notes to go down reflected by prices rising to make up for the loss of value of the notes

And Raiders of the Lost Ark never had any gold in it. ✅
ChatGPT - Yes, the Ark of the Covenant was covered in gold. According to the Bible, specifically in the book of Exodus (Exodus 25:10-22), the Ark was made of acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold both inside and out. It also had a gold molding around it and featured two gold cherubim on its cover, known as the Mercy Seat.
Raiders of the lost Ark was based on the Ark Of The Covenant so there was gold in the movie. Why do people try to make up their own facts? In the future try to avoid anything that ChapGPT can refute or just write a work of pure fiction and save yourself the time.

I can imagine the intrusive thoughts in this
I get it that gold is very pretty to look at, but look at how expensive and inefficient it is. Edris waxes lyrical about the implied security of having a thick steel door and yet, it is nothing compared to a SHA-256 algorithm.
Indeed, his quip towards the end - the inability to fit a gold bar in his pocket - describes how limited gold is. By contrast, with Bitcoin Edris could hold the £250 Billion contents of all 9 vaults on a £50 USB stick and it would infinitely more secure than any physical vault.
