Hey there Matt and Canva crew. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this much hoped for video for the POD community. Many of the TH-cam POD influencers have done their best to try and give their two cents on how to use Canva legally for print-on-demand, but it is sooooooo relieving to finally have an actual Canva produced video that gives the official nod on POD. This video is both simple but comprehensive enough to get the essence of how to responsibly use Canva for POD, and will certainly benefit those who find reviewing the Canva terms confusing. Most importantly, if there are any doubts as to whether or not print-on-demand is permitted by Canva, then this video gives a confident thumbs up, and will neutralize a lot of the speculation out there. So... great job guys! I understand that the POD creatives who use Canva are just a small portion of the varied and expansive types of Canvas users, but thank you for taking the time and consideration to attend to this little subset of your user base. Shout out to POD4Life (even if she might be an AI lol), and nice sticker designs too, Matt - you might want to start your own POD store in the basketball niche 😁 Thanks once again for producing this... and Keep on Keeping on, Canva!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but what they said in this video indirectly is that you can not use any of the Canva elements, free or pro in your commercial designs. Only private. The overlapping requirement makes no sense since you can't always overlap something with anything and make it look good. Bottom line, Canva should only be used as editing tool. The graphic elements and photos should be avoided 100%. 05:50 design used as a showcase speaks volume of how unrealistic it is.

@@canva Hey again Canva. Hehe, glad I could make Matt teary. Who would’ve thought that basketball stickers and copyright banter could be so emotional, LOL. But I totally get it… Canva serves a lot of different creative and entrepreneurial communities, and the platform wasn’t originally designed with POD in mind. So, the fact that you guys are making the effort to accommodate the POD community - particularly it’s concerns around legal use - is a baby step forward in the “copyright direction” (do you see what I did there 😁). But seriously though, thank you once again for finally producing this video. It’s not a substitute for individuals researching the legal specificity of their own ventures, but it is an answer to the speculative question circulating for some time in the POD community: is Canva allowed for print-on-demand? This video essentially gives a definitive and official: “yes… however…” The “however” is still the individual users responsibility to research and tailor to their situation, to which Matts recommendation to seek legal advice and reach out to support when in doubt is the way to go if anyone is serious about a commercial venture. But the “yes” puts an end to all the unofficial claims out there that misguidedly state that Canva can’t be used for POD at all. I feel a lot of the POD community was yearning for more reciprocation from Canva. So thanks again guys… hope you can do more POD videos in the future of the Brand New Era. Shout out to all the Good Humans out there! Peace out ✌

@@BBDD. People are losing their accounts, and you can't open another one once you are banned, all because of "wrong" usage of Canva elements. Canva giving this vague replies "original enough" and "overlap it somehow" is causing people to risk their income using Canva elements. It is just facts, supported with evidence.

I’m a relatively new Pro user, to Canva. So far, I had only dabbled with a few features…until recently, when a dear friend asked me to make a memorial video for her mother. At first, I wasn’t sure where to start, or wasn’t even sure what app to use. I decided to open up Canva and all of the uncertainty went away! Canva made my video creation a breeze and my friend loves the results! Thank you, Canva!

Thank you so much for this video. It has clarified so much for me. I already know we’re not allowed to use a design by itself on our creations or items that we want to sell, such as T-shirts. It has to be our own original design that we create from Canva’s elements, not just changing colors or adding a border. Well done on this video! KDP is not asking copyright but copyright licence and those two things are not the same. You can't use any Canva elements free or pro because they or their legal team doesn't distinguish between copyright and copyright licence. No author on th planet has copyright over everything inside the book. That would mean authors have to make their own fonts to write book. KDP is asking for licence. Since Canva is not aware of that, do not use ANY Canva elements in your books.

Hello Canva Team! Thank you for putting this video together and sharing it with your community. I am absolutely glad that your team exists since visual design had been a handicap of mine. Still is, but it’s getting better. I have read and listened to a few messages that attempt to clarify all the ways the licensing terms can and should be adhered to. The question I have to ask is at when would an end user discover they’re in violation? That’s not the aim at all, but I don’t think users should find out at the point of printing or distribution. Eager to read your feedback. Thanks!

Thank you for confirming what I knew about using Canva clipart and fonts. What is still murky is where do POD sellers have any recourse if their design has been stolen. Since we are not the originators of the work does this mean we can not file to have stolen work removed from other Etsy shops? If we cannot protect our work from being stolen then Canava is not the tool to use to create POD products.

6:08 That's something I struggle with. If I use an element and add some text to it, I feel like I made a creative effort, but maybe Canva disagrees because I only used 1 element. If I use one element 2 times (let's say I have an element and the same element mirrored), same thing. I don't really know how strict the standards are in this. How can I know for sure I can use it? How much needs to be added to an element for it not to be standalone? Is just text standalone?

I have a question please! I want to make a journal to sell on KDP/Amazon, and I am going to do it all my own images and design. I want to produce this through Canva. What happens to my design that I upload into canva to make it? Can people take it and use it? Does it fall under your other rules and protects my design in your design software? I am one of these people who really wants the whole thing to be my design. I am a pro subscriber. The jist I get, learn your lesson and do it all on your own design and works. I dont want to infringe on anyones art or things they have made. So what happens to my journal that I upload in your program to then sell on amazon or whereever. It gets saved right? Into your program? Basically, will my design be protected under all these terms you have described? I guess I am worried about making it all my own, from the beginning to the end, and then it gets dispersed everywhere without my knowledge etc. Is there a way to make it in your program and keep it hidden or does it get logged into the templates, graphics etc. and then anyone can use it, edit it? Hope I am clear in what I am asking. Ty so much for all the informative videos and really a great program.

I can remove the background from an external app. You do not mind and feel that it is against your rights and theft. I do not waste your designs, but the background does not have a watermark, and I did not read anything about it, but there are people who tell me that the design is mine and that I can remove the background at a time that suits me from an external application, and I want to know if this is allowed or not, and mention a reason?

Am I correct in understanding that if the design is original and I am not using any standalone elements (unless within the pixel limit), then it is legal to create and sell these resources for teachers to purchase and print, whether or not it includes free and/or pro content? If I write a book in Canva and use some element files (small, in a corner-don’t know pixels, is not a photo but a watercolor illustration) as is but on a page with my unique writing, is this permissible? For example, there’s a full page of writing in two columns and a watercolor image of a sun from Canva in a corner of the page at the top or bottom of one column. Is this ok? Do the words on the page make it mine? Or do I need to type or decorate on top of that sun to “make it mine”? Thanks!

Aug 2024. For those tagging me I have just sent another question to get clarification from Amazon KDP. If they say 'no' to elements and free or pro Canva images I will let you know. The only solution would be to create your own AI Art images which is what I have been doing.
If you DO have existing books that may have Canva Pro or Free images or elements or even any other platform like Creative Fabrica you may have to update your books with AI Images to be compliant with the 'must own publishing rights' KDP rules.
As soon as I hear back as to whether " I own the copyright and I hold necessary publishing rights" means you can use licensed images as Canva mentions in the video above, I will let you know.
99% of books uploaded to KDP would have no idea that " I own the copyright and I hold necessary publishing rights" does not mean 'license' to use. So if KDP say NO there are a LOOOOOOT of people who will need to update their books with their OWN images or AI Art to be compliant.

Thank you so much for finally clarifying this. I was very confused with all the external "helpers" interpretations of these rules. Being very new to POD I don’t want to have to worry about if I’ve interpreted the terms correctly for elements used from numerous places. I already have so much to learn,, I like using Canva because I can do most of what I need within it alone. I want to eventually draw everything myself but it can take me a while to do as I am out of practice and am teaching myself how to work digitally. I can still create my ideas well with the quality of graphics that are offered in Canva. Honestly I usually prefer the elements in Canva too!
I would like a explanation on fonts too. Are ALL of those ok to use with a pro account? Especially in a text only design?

Hi Canva and Matt! I have a unique scenario that wasn’t covered in this video, which by the way was excellent information thank you so much. I am creating a low content book (journal). On one of my journal pages, I have graphic elements used creatively together to create a unique design with the exception of one element that was not technically modified, but the other elements have been modified as you showed in your examples in this video. With that being said, would that one element that was not modified on that same page be considered a “standalone” element even though it’s technically on top of a background element and surrounded by other modified elements on that page to create an overall unique page design? If possible I would love to show this to a Canva support rep if possible to confirm if my page is acceptable and not violating any Canva terms. Your help is greatly appreciated. I need to confirm if the page is okay as a whole or if I need to still modify that one unmodified element on that page.

Thank you very much for this video Matt and team - found it extremely helpful as there are a lot of conflicting information out there regarding canva use for printables and templates.
However can I just clarify or double check a few points?
    1. Can you use both Free and/or Pro content in commercial use Printables and Templates, as long as it is not standalone and the template is in Canva?
    2. At the 12:00 mark Matt mentions you can use Pro content in unedited format ( i.e. standalone?) in electronic publications... is this only for e-books and why would this be different than for commercial templates and printables?
    3. If I create a template to sell in Canva with Pro elements can I export it as a flattened PNG and reupload so that the final template it is uneditable (if for instance only the text should be editable, not the images, can I flatten the images?)
Thanks very much for all your help!

Hi, I wonder if you can help me with the following:
I've been advised by an IP lawyer, that it's not legal to use assets that are covered by other's trade-marks.
For example photos of Barbie, Lego, logos of Lego, logos of Ferrari on the car... and even Olympic circles (depicted both on the photo or as a graphic element).
Now, each of the above-mentioned elements is available in Canva, sometimes in relatively many instances.
And each is covered by the Canva licence (either Free or Pro, for personal and commercial use).
Assuming the usage of the picture is part of the design and the picture does not endorse anyone's business or does not present content in a negative light.
The question is: is this really ok to use?
    - If yes and it still comes to the legal conflict -- who is liable? Canva user or Canva?
    - If not, what is the advised best practice?
    thanks.
