What a refreshing change to hear this wonderful work instead of the usual standard repertoire. It’s a mystery why this is not heard more often, the number of concertos for cello and orchestra is hardly vast. Much appreciated upload.
Thank you very much!
The melody which opens (and closes) this marvelous concerto is surely one of the most haunting themes by any composer of the 20th Century.
William is IMO one of the greatest 20th c composers. His 1st symphony, violin concerto, viola concerto and cello concerto are the equal to anything from this century and superior to much from the 19th c.
Should read William Walton but stupid TH-cam doesn’t allow me to edit for some unknown reason.
Couldn't agree more Andrew. I adore this work -- Walton's best I think.
@@paullewis2413 I was thinking you knew him personally referring to him by his first name. :-) I haven't been able to get this out of my head for a long time. What an extraordinary concerto. Pure gold.
@@auerod ha ha, yes it appeared that way. I didn’t know him but I did see him conduct his wonderful violin concerto. I was only in my teens and didn’t fully understand then what a great work it is along with the viola and cello concertos 😁
A masterful sensitive interpretation of a jewel in the Cello repertoire! Congratulations to solist, conductor, and orchestra!!!
The superlative performance of this piece, I think. Just exquisite. Thanks for posting!
Solid version! I never get tired of listening to this concerto.
Are you familiar with his violin and viola concertos? Both outstanding. 😁
@@paullewis2413 No. I'll have to try them.
Outstanding performance by an outstanding cellist. This concerto is right in Alstaedt's wheelhouse.
To be honest I can’t think of a piece in the cello repertoire that isn’t in Altstaedt’s wheelhouse. One of the things that makes him so remarkable IMO. 😃
Being able to play anything is not so great when you don't have superlative tone color or presentation.@@JCook21
Exquisite performance!
Amazing soloist and the best Orchestra, and my platonic love Andreea Alcalde.
Outstanding in every way. I have never been quite convinced by the last movement in recordings, but I am here. And details of the orchestral parts beautifully caught by the cameras, if occasionally missing the solo cello. Spilt screen should be used more?
Thank you for the detailed comment and thoughts!
Bravoooo!!
Bellissimo!
3:00 - 4:14 this passage is so beautiful omg
Orgasmo.
schön gesungen
Nicolas my babeee😁😍😍
Alien theme based on this?
too bad the camera cuts to the bassoon at 12:10 just as the cello has the most beautiful moment! Great performance tho.
We hope you enjoyed it anyway.
Camerawork is the bane of classical concerts. @@klassikswrkultur
Hi @nonenoneonenonenone! Live is still the best.
When will be Dvorák with N. Altstaedt?)🙏
😊 A highly physical challenging piece, executed by Cello Athlete faultless technique and complete command of his instrument. (It is a pity that one of the violist players, in the front row was falling asleep during the performance.)
If he took as much care with his hair as he did in selecting his clothing, his playing would stand out more.
Get a haircut!
His tone quality could have a lot more color, too.
Just because his stylistic choices don’t match up to your opinions does not mean it is a bad performance
Hmmm on second thought.....
Such rough playing. No refinement. Not artistic.
You just don’t understand the music
