    Completely agree Marc, I too thought that was a missed opportunity on behalf of us McLaren fans. I was surprised Lando didn't pit, even if he had pulled into the pits and the tyres weren't ready, he still would have had a two or three second comfortable buffer.

    • @w4lsh
      @w4lsh 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No business being at the front?! He's in a Red Bull, Perez has no business being in the midfield. This narrative trying to be peddled that the Red Bull isn't the fastest car is laughable...

    • @Roguescienceguy
      @Roguescienceguy 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@w4lsh your one of the only ones with that opinion. The fact of the matter is that he didn't have the speed in the beginning because the RB20 has a far narrower window of operation than certainly the McLaren, but towards the latter stages of the race he somehow found more speed. We've witnessed that with Max on a number of occasions now. If you can't see past you not liking him then that's your problem.

    I though Villeneuve's comments were refreshing. That's the bonus of having ex drivers on there, Rosberg is decent too but likes of Villeneuve don't have the relationships with these guys so don't mince their words. He said what we all think. Great race and decent summary. Love the countryside walk vibe...was considering getting a place out in the sticks, moving out of the city but sadly it seems the wfh trend is being reeled in, so not worth the commuting risk :(

    Hi Mark, Dan Ricciardo has been an on going talking point but one thing that hasn't been discussed or explained is the huge weight difference between Dan & Yuki. I believe its around 12kg. I understand the min car/driver weight of 798kg , I imagine Dan would be close to the min weight and Yuki runs a fair amount of ballast which can be of benefit with no restrictions on where it is placed. What effect do you think it may have if any ?

    • @F1Elvis

      There are strict restrictions on placent of ballast, but it could have a small effect.

  • @gpaje

    He could have won, but that's how it goes with safety cars, he said he got a break in Miami and now it went the other way with the safety car. However, he didn't have the speed at the end of the race to win. With everything reset, behind the last safety car, with 10 laps to go, he was bunched up behind Max, had fresher tyres on a dry track with DRS enable, but Max just pulled away.

    • @F1Elvis
      @F1Elvis  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I don't believe he had bad luck in Canada, just a bad call from the team...

    • @gpaje
      @gpaje 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@F1Elvis Maybe, but wasn't he 15 seconds ahead of Max before the safety car? By the last safety car, he was right by max with better tyres and he still couldn't reel him in. Not sure what strategy would have matter with a certain Ferrari causing the last safety car and bunching the field yet again. Even if he was ahead of Max by the last safety car, he didn't seem to have the speed to keep up with Max in dry conditions.

    • @exert2020
      @exert2020 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@gpajeI agree either Marc. They could and should have pitted at the same time as everyone else. We've seen the footage and there was enough time to do it. It's like they left him out to try and keep that large gap, which is ridiculous considering in any scenario the cars will just be bunched up again. There was absolutely nothing to gain by staying out. As for being slower on that final tyre, that is a strange one. Did Lando push too hard on first lap and lose performance? Did Max have a slight adjustment during the pit to improve driveability? Was Lando busy holding back to keep Oscar under 1 second to try and secure double podium? I'm thinking the latter as he was radio'd after a few laps to say leave Oscar. As soon as he did Max didn't pull away any further and Lando left Oscar in the dirt.
      Overall not a bad performance but those few bad calls definitely cost them imo.

    • @optyfen5276
      @optyfen5276 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gpaje In Miami there was nothing Max or Red Bull could have done better. In Canada McLaren COULD have given the instruction to Lando to pit at the last possible opportunity if SC on dash appeared and have sent the pitcrew out just in case. Then on the second inter stint the McLaren was the fastest car, Lando could have pushed earlier and therefore decreased the gap to Max which in return would give the overcut a way higher chance. In fact there was a real chance for him to stay ahead if he came out ahead because it was too wet offline.
      It's debatable whether Max's pace at the end was good enough to overtake Lando if he were P1 on the slick stint. I don't think it was, especially given Max made up a lot of time during braking and going into corners. In my opinion the strength of the McLaren on the inters and Merc on the slicks was if excecuted better greater than what Max and Red Bull had to offer.

    Ur race analysis are impressively spot on, perhaps a race strategist seat is in ur future. Imo after the first safety car McLaren's chances to win got slimmer, it was either Mercedes & Redbull's race to win, Lando or even Max were lucky Russell made so many mistakes that kept pushing him back.

  • @PeteLeuenberger

    Really enjoy the commentary and the walk in nature :-)
    Another error McLaren made in my opinion is to decide to come in for new intermediates after they missed the first stop. Performance wise, it looks like new vs old intermediates were a wash. Also, of course it was tight for him to come in and surprise his team, but he had 11 seconds for his team to get it done and so it that way, in no different position than Max.
    As far as Ricciardo, I like him for sure, but am getting annoyed at him not performing. Just like Perez, I just don't enjoy watching them anymore, you know this is it, they are not going anywhere. Neither of them will ever be WC. Like Ocon who is a douchebag, Magnussen, these guys all demotivate me from watching them, unless they get passed. And even then, it's only half-satisfying.

    Without any safety cars at all, with the speed he had on worn inters, he would have won by a considerable margin. If he'd come out first after the 1st safety car I think he might have found it difficult to defend against max after the 2nd safety car. The speed the mercs had towards the end - could have easily ended up 4th. So 2nd far from a bad result.

    Always all this talk aboot spoilers and aero and all the talk about the engines and blah blah blah.. in the end it's only aboot one thing in F1. The tyres. Can you get the shitty tyres to work or not.
    Its been a problem for well over 20years now.
    If you have a square box, and an engine that's 50hurspwrs short, but, you can make the tyres work you still winning.

      @@bennylloyd-willner9667 yes, it does, but how much of that is by design? Other categories don't experience the same issues.
      I think because they just have a proper tyre. No tricks, no bells, no whistles. Just a racing tyre.
      Like how much aero development is put in keeping those stupid tyres alive versus making the cars quicker in absolute laptime?

      they are ask to make the tyers degrad and the driver's with car design have to make make them work. It adds in a unknown and team's have to work around it with strategy. They could make long lasting race tyers but f1 didn't want that in fact they want to make them a steep softer and even harder to get into working temp and then banning tyer blankets to make it even more verbal and harder for the team's and driver's. F1 is more than just about who can go fastest and push the car. F1 about strategy working tyers and managing fule loads in to the stint

    So what about the comment that Redbulll, by deliberately keeping Checo out so as not to have a safety car, thus effect Max....is similar to the Renault/ Piquet/Alonso situation?.... Did Max benefit because Checo did not pull over or stop as should have done?

    You have been very kind to Norris. I like the guy but he had a very fast car, very. And in theory, he could have caught up with Max and even challenge him for the win, but IMO Norris lacks the "Lewis or Montoya style cojones" Any of these two drivers would wear the tires to the threads to get the win. Remember there was a second SC in lap 54 and Max was already having problems......

    Jaques Villeneuve said a few things I have been on about for a while. Ricciardo. He was spot on. Ricciardo is overrated. As stated quite clearly and succinctly by Jaques.
    Also, what was the story with George Russell and the cops there?
    Hooray for McLaren and both drivers and good on George.

      Neither I nor Jaques deny that. Did you hear specifically what Jaques said?
      Also that is what Zak Brown said, we had to go for a multiple race winner. Until the truth became apparent when Lando stomped him into the dust and McLaren had to buy him out.
      Getting money is a better skill than driving as far as Daniel goes.
      Yuki seems to be better than him too.
      Obviously Max as better.
      He did nothing at Renault.
      He lucked into several wins.
      Maybe he 'was' 'good' but he was never elite and never worth all the accolades.
      Checo Perez is a 'multiple race winner' too.
      About the same standard each. Average.
