This is one of the best, most effective films ever made. It’s leaves you feeling some sort of intense way when it’s over. I remember about 15 years ago when I was in college, I called up a girlfriend of mine and said, “do you want to come over? We’re watching Requiem for a Dream.” She said, “no thanks, I don’t need to be disturbed and depressed right now.” Lol bottom line, this movie is powerful and really moves you when you watch it in a deep and intense way.
I've been an extra on several movie sets. It's like this pretty much all day everyday. I've always found it amazing, because all the weird, seemingly disjointed stuff that happens all day and all the waiting everyone does on set, turns into the amazing piece of art we see on the screen. :)
Why didn't I know about this movie for the past 15 years, for Christ sake it depressed me a lot but I loved it a lot too. Please don't miss to watch this movie.
I never thought that the scene with the old ladies talking to each other would be my favorite scenes in cinematic history. It’s just so well done with the dialogue editing and music.
I watched this movie yesterday for the first time...It's incredible. How the heck did Aronofsky make this movie (or any of his other movies) and not be nominated for an oscar????
The reason people throw up watching this movie is because of how fast someone's life can go down the drain, and they look at the ending scenes and then they look at the beginning and just get sick at how much the character's lives have changed and how fast it takes.
I had no idea the scene outside the apartment building was shot in the rain, the lighting there was very effective, completely evocative of a bright, hot summer day
Does anyone know how they created this style of film. like the hazey look. I dont know how to explain it. Other examples would be like in the film " Fallen Angels" directed by Wong Kar or "All About Lily Chou Chou" by Shunji Iwai. Does it have something to do with the fact the film was produced in the 2000s and the camera graphics wern't as clear??? Or do the directors add this to the film to create some kind of effect?
The "Summer" section of the movie was shot on Fuji film which gave it a warmer feel. Matthew Libatique, the director of photography, also spoke how he "pulled" the Fuji film a "full stop", meaning he opened the camera aperture to let in more light which slightly overexposed the film and reduced the contrast between light and dark areas of the image. You can hear his commentary on the DVD. Sadly Libatique's commentary isn't available on youtube while Aronofsky's is. There were also several different cameras employed to give variety in cutting, even Eyemo cameras and camcorders. The goal was to have the film look dreamlike during the Summer portion but as the seasons wore on to become more harshly realistic and high contrast, like the experience of waking up.
I've been to all of the places where they filmed this movie. The pier in the beginning is vastly different now and was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, so they had to rebuild it and it looks like shit now. Coney Island is also very different. That tall tower - The Parachute Drop - is still there, but Coney Island is much more cleaner and built up than before. That roller coaster at 2:56 was demolished before the movie was released. However, the outside of Sara's apartment still looks the same.
Like the book The Alchemist, this was one of the things that changed my life forever, it was a great, amazing movie, and i'm glad that it almost made me throw up towards the end, if you havent seen it, you can probably pick it up at Half-Price Books for 5 to 10 dollars. (at least thats where i found it!)And I highly, highly recommend it.

If for some reason 4 hours of BTS footage was released for this film, I would watch it all over and over again.

I'm from the future, but Hollywood doesn't like to be confronted with the problems at hand. Ironic right?
one of my top 3 films ever, so sad, great story, especially if you have experienced some of the same shit in life

The closing scene of this movie where each of the main characters assume the fetal position is devastating. Make me bawl like a baby every time.
Thanks so much for this. This movie was incredible.
man jared looks like a teenager!
And he still looks like he’s barely aged!
How you doing these days? It's been ten years

@toughcookie5454 good question... because REAL talent and gifted directors are almost always overlooked
First time i saw this was 2002, i was 14 and some older dudes smoked some weed with me and we watched it. It terrified me.

It's interesting how they build everything piece by piece the scenes. Looks extremely boring waiting for your turn to do the shot also.
