I always thought it was them dressed as cherubs, or angels in short. Kind of depicting that the main victims of war are children. I'm in my 40s now, but I grew up in the 80s and 90s in Northern Ireland, at the tail end of the troubles. I moved away at 18, and to this day, I am still traumatised by what I witnessed. Theres nothing more nerve-racking to me than someone asking me about it, or asking what religion I am. The fear is still there, its so strange.

The imagery and the song is referencing what we refer to as "The Troubles", 30 years of "civil disorder" (god, but I hate euphemisms). I'm from, grew up, and still live in NI. We got through it and now prosper (kinda).....others didn't. 3,000+ died during it. An aspect, whilst not unique to Northern Ireland, of the conflict, was it's religious sectarianism - hence, I think, the choice of some of the visuals. I'd wish to highlight the loss of a lad called Eamon Quinn, someone I knew, who was shot dead simply because he was a Catholic in the early 1980's. 3,000+ individuals died, and for what?? Eamon, for me, should not be forgotten. No one who died should be. Songs like this, are profoundly serious, and I'm impressed that you picked up on not just the musicality of the song but the context in which it was written. One small thing...her surname is pronounced "RearDon"....yup, you butchered it. That's of little import. Anyway, thank you for your ongoing musical analyses. I always enjoy them , and it's good to see you back.

I’m not from Ireland obviously but I’m Irish heritage. I’m glad you spoke on that because very people have any idea of what the Irish have gone through. When my ancestors immigrated from Ireland to the US to escape the famine we continued to be marginalized. Thank you for your comments.

2 things I love about your reactions: 1.how perceptive you are when listening to songs. even when you've never heard of a song, you can pretty much always hit what the emotional core is because you pay attention to what you're listening to, and 2. how you research your songs. You don't just listen to the song and go "that was nice" and leave it at that, you research the background of the song and what it's about, and as a nerd that also feels the need to deep dive into the things she likes, I really appreciate this quality about your reactions. It's so much more interesting than the alternative, and it also distinguishes you from the thousands of other youtubers who just listen and comment something like "cool" and take no further interest. Thank u.

I was also smitten by the power of this Cranberries song when I first heard it, and after. On the other end of the spectrum, her/their "Dreams" is as ethereal and "happy" as this one is gritty and grim. Lookin forward to "Houses" on Monday! Zep's FIFTH album. "We've done FOUR already, but now we're steady".(You'll hear that in "The Ocean," lol.)

Oh awesome daily uploads! I don't know if you're planning on reacting to music in chronological order or what but you should definitely get to 90s and The Cranberries eventually. The esthetic of Zombie is riding the wave of Grunge music, which was popularized by Nirvana, which you _must_ get to, probably in the top 5 bands ever.
But Zombie is easily one of the most iconic songs of the 90s, along with Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit, Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On, Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You, Radiohead's Creep (also riding the Grunge wave), Oasis's Wonderwall, Jeff Buckley'a version of Hallelujah, No Doubt's Don't Speak, etc etc

Dia dhuit as Éireann ☘️ hello from Ireland 🇮🇪 this song is about two children in England killed by a bomb planted by the IRA , but also the murders and atrocities committed by the British army against Irish civilians. The six countries in the north of Ireland ( an island nation ) still held by the UK caused all these problems. After 800 years of occupation, terrorism , genocide ( where over a million Irish people were starved to death ) even sold to slavery or taken prisoner and shopped off to other countries just for stealing food . Protestants moved to the North of Ireland and the Catholic’s were treated as second class so they fought back descending into evil acts on both sides . The Irish language was banned , our unique irish sports were banned , our names and town names ect all anglicised. Such a tragedy when the Irish language is so ancient. Thankfully it still exists today and areas of Ireland where the language is spoken as the first language . Plus many Gaeil Scoile ( Irish language shcoools ) all around the country now . Where children only speak Irish at school . Check out the softer side to The Cranberries , Ode to my family , when you’re gone ,, dreams , ridiculous thoughts, no need to argue, to name a few . Barróga mór ( big hugs ) 👍🏻

Dolores O'Riordian, RIP. This song was huge back in 1994. The collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the end of the Cold War with the collapse of the Soviet Union raised hopes that the conflict in Northern Ireland -- raging since 1916 -- might end as well. But not as long as the zombie ideas animating the conflict persisted, that is, ideas which come back to life after they have been seemingly killed off -- "In your head, in your head, they're still fightin'..." When you're ready for more from The Cranberries, check out "Linger" and "Dreams" to start. And if you're looking for another album to add to the list, check out U2's excellent 1983 album, War, another great Irish musical commentary on the troubles there and war in general, with a sound that was revolutionary in its time, every track a gem, featuring the songs "New Year's Day", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", and "Seconds" among others with war themes.

As to your surprise about Zombie not charting -- I have been a huge music fan for over 60 years, and have found that the best songs and albums rarely make the pop charts. Nor do they win Grammys. Hence the terms "alternative rock," "post-punk," "progressive rock," and probably some others to cover the truly good music that the mainstream never hears.

Look up the conflict in Northern Ireland in the 1960s to 1990s, and the UK, and then maybe do a review in a month or two's time. I think doing reviews of some songs after learning more about it, would also be popular (after having a reaction video from earlier).
A lot of it was worse than the worst ghettos in America of the time. Hardcore violent. In the UK. Deloris probably had PTSD from witnessing all the terrorist violence, and the UK army involved in all that.

@@Tommy_Barlow Well the song references the 1916 Easter uprising but it’s mainly about an IRA bombing in Warrington,England that killed two schoolchildren….here’s what Delores said about why she wrote the song. “There were a lot of bombs going off in London and I remember this one time a child was killed when a bomb was put in a rubbish bin -- that's why there's that line in the song, 'A child is slowly taken,'" O'Riordan told Songwriting Magazine. "We were on a tour bus and I was near the location where it happened, so it really struck me hard - I was quite young, but I remember being devastated about the innocent children being pulled into that kind of thing. So I suppose that's why I was saying, 'It's not me' - that even though I'm Irish it wasn't me, I didn't do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension."
She told Vox magazine in 1994 that the song was written in part as a mechanism to grapple with her identity as an Irish citizen that did not support the actions of the IRA.
"The IRA are not me. I'm not the IRA. The Cranberries are not the IRA. My family are not. ... When it says in the song, 'It's not me, it's not my family,' that's what I'm saying. It's not Ireland".

The same old thing since 1916 was the Easter Sunday Uprising. Mostly the sound of British artillery, automatic weapons and the rifle crack of the firing squads thereafter ringing in everyone's ears, and he the generational hate that ensued. Despite the peace negotiated in the 1990s, there remain extremist Zombies who won't give up the fight? and British troops keeping them apart. This song was in protest of two innocent children killed in a pointless IRA restaurant bombing.

Not only were the IRA involved as terrorists, there was also the INLA, THE UVF and the UDA, nor were The British Army, who were supposed
to be peacekeepers, adverse to adding to the atrocities.

@@jameswiglesworth5004 of course it was, but by stating the Irish Republican War, hopefully people who are
