Videonystagmography (VNG eng testing) National Dizzy and Balance Center

  • At NDBC we use Videonystagmography (VNG) technologies for testing inner ear and central motor functions. VNG testing is considered the new standard for testing inner ear functions over Electronystagmography (ENG), because VNG measures the movements of the eyes directly through infrared cameras, instead of measuring the mastoid muscles around the eyes with electrodes like the previous ENG version. VNG testing is more accurate, more consistent, and more comfortable for the patient. By having the patient more comfortable and relaxed, consistent and accurate test results are more easily achieved.
    VNG testing is used to determine if a vestibular (inner ear) disease may be causing a balance or dizziness problem, and is one of the only tests available today that can decipher between a unilateral (one ear) and bilateral (both ears) vestibular loss. VNG testing is a series of tests designed to document a persons ability to follow visual objects with their eyes and how well the eyes respond to information from the vestibular system.
    This test also addresses the functionality of each ear and if a vestibular deficit may be the cause of a dizziness or balance problem. To monitor the movements of the eyes, infrared goggles are placed around the eyes to record eye movements during testing. VNG testing is non-invasive, and only minor discomfort is felt by the patients during testing as a result of wearing goggles. Appointments usually last about 1.5 hours, and testing is covered by all insurances.

    I had this test last week. Please don't believe all the patients experiences are the same as yours. After reading some comments I was afraid to have the VNG test. It wasn't bad at all. The air in the ears was nothing like I thought it would be. It actually felt comfortable. I would have rather had this test that go to the dentist. Everyone reacts different to testing.

    I just had this test done yesterday. I am a 28 y/o female & I had no after-effects except some slight nausea. It was not painful, but extremely uncomfortable. They blacked out the room & blew cool air into my ear for 60 secs, then removed it for 60 secs. About 30 secs into the cold air blowing I felt like I was spinning. 60 secs after the air out they had me stare at a red light for 30 seconds. That makes the dizziness stop almost immediately. I suggest taking someone to have a hand to squeeze.

    Had the caloric test today, only managed one out of four tests. It was one of the most unpleasant experiences I've ever had. Right ear with warm water was enough, bugger the other tests. Got enough results to sort of rule out an ear problem though, I'm sure if my ear was damaged the dizziness wouldn't have been as severe.
    The dizziness was on a level I've never experienced, was like being in a washing machine at 1000mph. Add to that I couldn't see anything, and the whole thing lasted about a minute and a half and took a while to settle, it was awful.
    People who get through the whole thing are very brave, but everyone reacts differently so if you're going for a test good luck.

    @francesca27545 Thanks for your response and yes you are correct. Dizziness and Vertigo and one in the same but are also two completely different monsters. Dizziness is related to SO many things. What's nice is that some providers will say its inner ear related and take a pill there's nothing you can do. This way, with specific testing we can rule out or rule that you in fact DO have an inner ear issue AND it CAN be treated.

    I certainly hope this test will help to figure out what my problem is. I am 69 years old and have had vertigo on and off for 33 years. Most episodes lasted about ten days, but some , like the present one went on for over four months. I have always been able to manage ok on my own, or with intervention by a physical therapist doing the Epley maneuver for me many times. That is not clearing it up anymore and new severe symptoms occur during my waking hours, which has never happened until a few months ago. The vertigo would only hit me when I got in and out of bed or tried to turn over in bed. I really hope the new technology will benefit me. The vertigo is definitely starting to affect my quality of life.

    I had this test done. It isn't comfortable. but it isn't the worst thing in the world, either. You experience dizziness, but if you're dizzy already, then it's not a big deal. The worst part was the warm and cold air in the ears. For me, it didn't make me as dizzy as I sometimes get on my own, but it hurt. Like when you're changing altitudes and the pressure makes your ears pop kinda hurt. :)

    @skinisskin I cannot say what I think it is or what possibly could be going on. There are many reasons why someone has a vestibular deficit. The proper diagnostic workup is imperitive to be properly diagnosed so that you can be properly treated. My suggestion is if they cannot figure out what is wrong, do not give up and get a second opinion.

    I had the caloric test at NDBC a week ago - I have never experienced such a primal fear reaction to any stimuli in my entire life- I am 65. It started first with the air test, upon the technician blowing air in my ear canal ( to test whether the eardrum has a hole or not) my legs started spasming in an involuntary way. I asked if this was normal - she said no. Then after the Rotational Chair test, I have the caloric test with warm water, then cold in each ear. Lying down and after about 30 seconds of the water spray both my legs and arms started spasming involuntarily - but the scariest part was the FEAR reaction that I felt - like I was dying. I left there feeling catatonic, and as if I have had an electro-shock experience. I have never experienced the sleep disturbances that have plagued me since - 3 terror nightmares in the last week - never had anything affect me so profoundly and disturbing. Asked if other people have had this reaction, the answer was no, and my test was normal. Ears feel full, ache, tinnitus is rasing and lowering in volume,- the Audiologist chalks it up to Anxiety. I am getting another opinion from a vestibular ENT.

      I had my ears cleaned out with water around the time I started getting vertigo episodes. When the water hit my ear I went into a panic and felt that I was dying. My heart went up to 150 ... And my left arm went limp and I was collapsing in the chair down to the floor. The doctor said it was considered a vasovagal reaction which is a physical reaction to fear. It's an emotional response. The catatonic state you were in was probably shock. The stress could have damaged your vagus nerve...which causes an entire list of other things. I'm getting this test done in may and I'm fearing the same outcome. Wish me luck

I was so dizzy I felt like throwing up. Thankfully they tell you not to eat before this test otherwise I probably would have thrown up. The audiologist asked if we could do that ear again because it didn’t read well on that side and I said heck no. I was nauseous the whole day after that.

    • @mb-3faze
      @mb-3faze ปีที่แล้ว

      ....and then what? That's the question I asked. The doctors like to look and test but there are no treatment options other than vestibular rehab. You want to test for dangerous neurological conditions (MS, stroke etc) within the first day of unexpected dizziness but that's confirmed through MRI scans. Once you have ruled out brain issues, you have a peripheral vestibular problem for which there is no cure unless you're "lucky" enough to "just" have one of the three forms of BPPV. I hope your condition has cleared up... I'm just starting out on this, my second unpleasant journey into bilateral peripheral vestibular failure.

    @toxicmodzzz I know the fear and anxiety of getting ANY of these tests must have you completely overwhelmed. IF you have a defecit it will actually NOT cause you vertigo issues. These tests do need to be done to figure out what's going on. Let the provider know your apprehension and they can give you a longer break in between the calorics so you can relax a little. Let me know how everything goes. Go to the website under our video and get more info on different testing and why it's done.

Well not I am 22 and in college and about 2ish years ago I started getting dizzy more. I feel like it's the same type only it comes and goes. But I've also had migraines really bad web I was little. The doctors didn't know if they were seizures, but after testing it just proved it was really bad migraines. Well I did grow out of them. But now I have seen my 2 doctors where I live and one has referred me to the Anschutz Outpatient Pavilion in Aurora CO. The doctor there thinks it's migraines morphed into what they are now. But I have some hearing issues too. But not bad, I just miss certain sounds or I hear as if there was a cotton ball in my ear. From what I'm seeing by all these comments, I'm moving my appointment to way after a out of town trip mid Sept. Its around August 20th for this test they have scheduled but If it can cause balance and dizzy issues for weeks after as some say it caused them then I can't have that a week or so after the test driving over 6 hours out of town and back for a family visit. I need to move it to after the trip then. I will admit I also don't like the fact of them blowing anything in my ear to trigger issues. I'm there to see what the issues are not trigger them and make them start up worse. Hell that's what I'm trying to avoid! Its like knowing that standing in front of someone swinging a baseball bat will hurt but they put you in front of a swinging bat blind folded anyways to see if it hurts and what happens. I mean wtf? I have to do this test in a few hours. These comments definitely do not help my anticipation anxiety. I'm scared of the air or water in the ear because sometimes when I put rubbing alcohol in my ears after swimming my head spins extremely bad until I dump it out. I figure this is similar.

    • @curly364
      @curly364 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@courtneycacchione9924 wasn't to horrible. I did get dizzy like 6 times 3 times in each ear. Which is what they try to do anyway to make sure the vestibular system is working. I found out I have 62% vestibular damage in my left ear.

    • @curly364
      @curly364 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Scarlettbri_Mini3 thats completely normal. I felt like canceling as well but I wanted to get answers to my chronic dizziness and vertigo. It took 3.5 hours some parts were not fun but the rest was tolerable. The vertigo is intense if the inner ear is working correctly but the good news is it doesn't linger or last real long. Its not fun but its tolerable and you get answers. If you don't get dizzy at all then that means there's probably a lot of damage.

    What symptoms were you experiencing that prompted your doctor to want you to have this test done? I’ve been experiencing random wooziness/dizziness after having a clogged ear.

    Hi, I just thought I respond to your comment and advise you that dizziness is not always due to vertigo in someone your age and that it could be a sign of very low Ferritin (Iron) in your blood as well as as hormonal imbalances such as being Estrogen dominant and deficient in Progesterone. Ask you doctor to test you for these.There are Iron supplements & Hormone Balancers that you can buy from the Health Food Store that are much safer than prescription ones including Biogest Progesterone Cream.

    I had a VNG test recently and had pretty significant nystagmus with overshoots, square wave jerks, Hippus was visible and I also have continual eye flutters around the lower part of the on a near-constant basis. What causes these things? I am believed to have Dysautonomia (autonomic dysfunction) and POTS Syndrome. However, we haven't found anything on brain MRI scans. I'm physically "healthy" even though my blood pressure and heart rate bounce up and down wildly on a 24/7 basis, disturb my sleep, etc. My eyes have considerable wrinkles underneath (3 under each eye like an older person, but none on my face anywhere else) and I'm only 39), purplish tint on the skin below the inside corner of the eye and my upper eyelids are red/puffy/tender with bloodshot eyes on most days. I do feel pretty off-balance. What can cause these things?
    Segmental and Somatic Dysfuncton of the Cervical Region. I'm "twitchy" all over and have been since I was a kid. It's like my whole body's nerves malfunction and no doc or specialist has found anything other than a functional neurologist who just recently found those things via VNG.

    @Cochiti E - We accept almost ALL insurances. We are located in Minnesota so if you live here there usually is not any issues with someone being out-of-network with insurance. If your out-of-state we typically wouldn't be a preferred provider however. If interested in learning more about the billing side please call 952-345-3000 and ask for billing. They will help with the insurance stuff and look into your insurance too.

I'm really worried, I hope it's not as bad as the comments say, but I know for sure if I have to do the part at 0:33, I will be really sick by the end and that's not even the caloric portion :o Is there anything needed for preparation for the test? or suggestions from those who have done it?

    @Cochiti E Our facility offers a full comprehensive system to fully diagnose and treat all of our patients. Some patients may just be having dizzy spells which is it's own monster (meaning it can be many things). When it comes to Vertigo it primarily relates to the inner ear system and/or brain. My first suggestion would be to find someone who offers a full vestibular diagnostic workup. check out our website for journals and all that we do.
