Sangam era is the period in the history of ancient southern India (known as the Tamilakam) spanning from 3rd century BC to 4th century AD. It is named after the famous Sangam academies of poets and scholars centered in the city of Madurai. Keeladi was one of the spots discovered during the exploration works carried out in 2013-14, along the Vaigai river, for ancient civilizations along the river bed. The Keeladi site is at a strategic location south east of Madurai on the ancient highway (modern National Highway 49) connecting to Rameswaram and surrounded by several historical places including Kondagai and Manalur. Incidentally, Manalur has found a mention in Sangam literature as the seat of power of the Pandya kingdom. So for the archaeologists have found numerous evidences of earthenware dating back to 3rd century BC and evidences like Arretine pot shreds connecting the place to the West, especially Rome. There were antiquities with Brahmi inscriptions but the most prized one was the structure made of bricks matching the past excavations in Arickamedu in Pondicherry, Kaveripattinam and Kancheepuram districts. - Mr.Muthukrishnan, Pasumai nadai
