Hey there, I'm looking to add about 3/4 of an inch to possibly an inch and a quarter to my 5-ft library. A while ago in a thread you mentioned that there is going to be a reprint of Bob Cassidy's Art of Mentalism. Do you have any updates as to when that may be happening? I've been kicking myself lately for not purchasing a very affordable copy off of eBay. Typically they go from 200 - 400.00 and this particular copy was just over $100. Anyhow, I'm just anxiously waiting to put another book on my shelf, because all the books I have just aren't enough.
As someone who literally just got back into card magic at the tender age of 49. I'm working my way through Royal Road right now. Literally taking my slow time to really internalize and get all the details one might miss rushing to acquire the magical secrets. What I've come to understand, by consuming several videos and book lists, including this one, is that Mr. Lorayne was an exceptional teacher through the written word. So my next book, after RRCM, will be "The Magic Book" to really absorb and add to my repertoire of close up card magic. I have no aspirations to be a pro or amateur. I just want to entertain family and friends as a hobbyist. Last Friday I made a huge leap by overcoming my insecurities and performing a three trick routine for my parents and it really blew their minds. The confidence I gained from that impromptu performance has really peaked my desire for more.
Excellent list. I have everything on it except for the Lorayne compilation, but I do have the original booklets that make up the compilation. Also, note that it was A1 Multi-Media rather than L&L who originally published the Paul Harris trilogy. Murphy's bought the rights from A1 later.
@@EruditeMagic - Yep. I have all of the books that are in the entire classic collection. I still want the collection though. :0] Also, "Personal Secrets" and "My Favorite Card Tricks" along with a few old Al Leech booklets used to make up 95% of my entire card repertoire.
Wonderful video, as usual. FYI, I went to Don's Magic Books site and it is closed until further notice. I hope Don is okay and this is just an updating kind of thing. Either way, please send him my regards.
I am curious as to why you went with Practical Mental Effects rather than Annemann's Engima? You are not shying away on price given the Al Baker book. Annemann's Engima would give the reader access to the entire Jinx, albeit electronically, plus pretty much everything else Annemann published. I guess I am thinking back to something Max Maven said. In essence he said to read the Jinx rather than Practical Mental Effects. Just because it was right for John Crimmins doesn't mean it is right for others and vice versa for what Crimmins didn't include. This was a great entry.
That would be a great choice! You get OPM (Other People's Magic) with the Jinx/PMM, versus just the tricks Annemann created. No Brain Wave Deck, for example 🤷
@@EruditeMagic along those lines, while I know VI has a lot on their hands right now, getting the rights to the Jinx (I don't know if Tannen's or Robbins has them or if they are now public domain) and reprinting it in nice physical editions would be a great project (and likely a profitable one) for the company. I cannot think of an out-of-print magazine compilation in higher demand--and that includes Apocalypse and Pallbearer's Review. Given that I don't think Kaufman is interested in doing any more magazine compilations, VI is the right place to do this.
Fantastic episode! Have you ever considered reviewing “Maurice Fogel - In Search Of The Sensational”? Apologies if you have already done so. This book requires you to think. The presentation for many of the effects in the book seem dated, but if you think for a moment, you will realize that many modern performers are using these methods in effects that probably fooled you badly. You’ll also realize that many people claimed to have “created” effects which they actually stole from Fogle. One which stuck out like a sore thumb was his color lined psychometry bags. These were marketed as a great new idea and called “No -Brainer Bags Fogel was not credited. Immediately upon reading the book, I went out and had a seamstress. Make me a set of five bags. You may have stayed away from this one because it is out of print and difficult to find.
I have not. I don't even own it, though it's on my short list. I've been intrigued with Mr. Fogel for a while, but it will probably never make it as a topic on my channel. I find that too many magicians don't care much for history. 🤷♂️
@@EruditeMagic There are effects in the book as well but it is mostly history, so I understand why you would not feature it. Thanks for always replying and for your show.

@Dr.Tinkerpaw I'm hopeful that it will be early 2025 🤞

Love that!!
Very nice selection thank you.
You bet 👍
Thanks!
You're too kind - thank *you*
I really want the secret ways of Al baker. It’s on the top 5 books I’m trying to obtain right now
Exellent reviewing.
Keep. It up
Many thanks for the kind words!
Wow what an amazing collection of authors!
Indeed they are! We're so fortunate each of them decided to pen a love letter to other magicians.
A wonderful list as usual 😊👍😊😊😊👍👍
Thanks, Robert!
Another great post. Got me thinking :)
Always the goal, my friend! 👍
The Sankey trilogy, the Paul Harris AoA trilogy… between those 2 its over 180 tricks I believe
There are a TON of great tricks in just those 6 volumes

If you have the originals, you're in good shape. 👍 You can't get most of them anymore. Thanks for the clarification on A1!

You could do a lot worse, that's for sure!
Great show. But you said L&L asked Paul Harris to gather effects for his books, but they were produced by A1 Multimedia.
Well noted!

Was wondering the same thing.
Will do!
just bought "Unreal" and "slightly absurd"

Thank you for bringing these books to my attention. So much to learn, so much to consider. I'm just starting and this information is very helpful.
@donpepe9947 so glad!!
