  • This sighting took place at Pom Pom Camp in Botswana's Okavango Delta in late September 2021.
These female lions were eating an impala that was killed in the afternoon by a female leopard. We had watched the leopard in the morning, and eventually she climbed a tree to rest. When we returned in the late afternoon, we found a dead impala under the tree, and no sign of the leopard. She had probably left to find her sub-adult cub and bring him back for the meal.
But instead, when night fell and the the temperature dropped, three female lions, that we had seen resting nearby that morning, became active. They sniffed out the dead impala and took it for themselves. We found the female leopard up in a tree not far away, probably having been chased off by the lions. There was no sign of the leopard's cub.
