After that, get a piece of leather that is meant for repairs, very very cheap, and put the leather over the plastic, you can put it just on the inside or you can also put it on the outside of the handle for a even nicer , cleaner look
What do you think of your fix now that it’s been a year? Any regrets or thoughts of other ways to deal with this issue? Tearing all of the material off makes me nervous but I see that the problem just worsens over time.
LOL a year later and I’m doing full rebuilds on M5 engines - scraping a door handle means absolutely nothing now 🤣 Go for it ! Take your time when doing the edges, clean it up really well and you won’t be disappointed. I real like your question though. There’s a lot of crap on TH-cam of people doing things for the first time and trying to teach others ….
@@garevans66if you want it to look really nice and professional, get a piece of leather that's meant for repairs and the back is sticky, and remove the outer half of the handle, it just pops off, then put the leather right where the goo was and put the outer shell back on..the sides of the leather will be tucked in.. so then you have a handle that looks good and you can be proud of yourself for getting those sticky ass handles taken care of 😂😊
I am so ticked off that this happened…. But I appreciate the fix. It only has happened on the passenger side. My car is actually in a garage most of the time. But, last year I had it in the driveway for a couple of months and this happened.
The handle rubber coating gets dissolved and sticky from those scented pine trees you get from gas stations or other stores, which nicely release perfumes into the car. The perfume releases formaldehyde, which reacts with certain plastics or rubbers. Not to mention our lungs. I was reading somewhere about it, and to my surprise, as soon as I removed the scented pine tree from the car, the handle's rubber coating hardened back to the original within a day. It is the same type of scented oil diffusers many people plug in in their houses, and they later discover that the TV remote controls or all kinds of other small devices around the house are getting sticky. They release toxic oils, which are not healthy at all.

Thats a great idea ! It'll be softer to touch and definitely last - Thanks for sharing 😃

@@dnl35projects Thanks much for the response. That's awesome that you've gotten into full rebuilds.

Also it's very cheap for this leather!
Hi, where do you buy the leather from?
Theres no finished shot of the door handle!!
That was my first TH-cam video ! I should definitely have included a photo of the Gunk free handle !
It would be nice to see an up close view of the handle

Yes all it takes is a couple of hot days to trigger the old gluey gunk transforming the plastic on the door handle into that annoying sticky thing

Thats interesting ! thanks for sharing
Whats the chemical you used
I used mineral Turps to get the remaining glue out
Shame on BMW, they should recall and fix the problem for all models.
I partially agree but what bugs me the most is the fact they are still using that finishing / perish material in some of the cars today
Such and easy fix..
Thank you so much for putting this video online. 😊
I completely agree mines is getting worse and melted
BMW is shit for this.
Yeah they could think about the longevity of these parts
