    Thanks. I play almost exclusively in Open D and it’s nice to have a video with something beyond “introduction to” open D. Also, that guitar sounds beautiful.

    Hey Tom, thanks; you know I just got a little parlor guitar a Taylor GS mini mahogany and I'm learning to play in open D because it makes the little guitar sound huge, and the neck is kind of narrow and it's easier to make the chords when you can make simple stuff like open D and so I'm new to open D, I think a lot of us are and I really appreciate these lessons. 40 years of noodling on many different guitars, now I want learn to play right. New subscriber, thanks again!

    hey Tom, Tommy here! I play guitar, I have been , for man years, and have all ways struggled with music scales, and theory , I learned my chords and all ways played by ear .This past year i have been trying really hard to learn scales and theory AGAIN! ,I struggle with numbers and letters on a daily basis ,even at my Day job. Math has all ways been real hard for me, so scales remind me of math and confuses me .... I WANT TO KNOCK DOWN THAT WALL NOW SO BAD ,I stumbled into this vidio, ,and i am giving it a try ,I play the Blues every day and now IM learning all my old blues heroes from the 20s and 30s country Delta stuf, lots of Finger picking and Slide I play mostly open D, and G ,and I Kapo for A and E, A and E works for my voice Im starting to sound good But I still feel if i understood and learned the basic theory and scales IT would open up a better understanding for what im doing..I was practicing theory 9 months ago, then slipped away from it .YOUR VIDIO IS SIMPLE TO understand, BASIC And to the Point .. it just inspired me To start practicing the theory, and The scales again. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, you are a good teacher ...

    Becoming my favorite YT tutor. Much more out of band, creative and useful info than just "oh heres how to play a song" . HOWEVER...WHAT is that big patch of putty above the nut!?!?

    • @TomStrahle
      @TomStrahle  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I need to do a video about that. It’s foam. It keeps the strings behind the nut from ringing and creating unwanted overtones when recording short chord stabs. Did it to my main mandolin too.

    Hey Tom, big fan but something just clicked ... a light bulb moment. Seems like a ton of guys my age (60+) learned to play guitar as early rock caught on in the 1960’s. Some gave up and are returning to it as leisure time gains in popularity. A few have gone on and continued playing and some have gotten quite good but it is all by ear. My theory knowledge is non existent but I have played now over 55 years. I am satisfied with my diversity in music styles but seems like theory can enhance that skill especially with jazz improv. What might you suggest for this kind of player...

      This! I'm in the same boat. But now I've got enough money to buy the best of what I've always wanted in music gear. I'm loving guitar again! And I love the sounds and songs I play. I have a masters in mathematics, yet music theory throws me for a loop. Go figure. I remember that for music students in college, music theory was a huge divider for those that were going to continue in their majors, many talented musicians did fail this course.

    But I need to say something... should I, maybe not... it's all been said before... no, it needs to be said... but does it really?
    Yes, I'm going to utter those two horrible words...
