A haku lei is a style of lei worn on the head. Kuana Torres Kahele, a singer, songwriter, and hula practitioner, provides step-by-step instructions on how to make a double plumeria haku lei.
What a great idea! I am from Oahu, Hawaii and I use to be a polynesian dancer. Now I live in California. When I make leis for people. I have to use other materials that I can find in a craft store but I never thought you could do that. Mahalo Nui Loa for sharing this idea.
I got married in Hawaii on the Island of Oahu in a little private park. I wish I had you make my Lei po'o [if I said that right] I wore. I loved mine but yours are absolutely gorgeous. Mine actually got mildew on it on the way home on the plane. Bc when I opened up the container that it was in in the over head compartment I noticed the mildew on it so I had no choice but to throw it away. My husbands Ti Leaf Lei did great and I was able to dry it out and hang it on the wall in a natural branch type wreath. I am going to replicate one of yours using the white orchids so I have one. You do absolutely beautiful work. And I love the sentiment at the end of the video that your mom told you. Mahalo a na ke Akua e ho'omaika'i
Mahalo for this video! I am a hula student and now I know how to make my own Haku lei! We don't have Ti leaf here in North Carolina, so trash bags it is!
🌺 you save the best of the best at the end what your mother used to tell you . I'm inspired by it. specially when we make anything with LOVE and DEDICATION🌺🌊🏄
Wow very beautiful! My Granddaughter is graduating next year in Hawaii and I'm going to make her the money lie.. Your lei is so beautiful and would do yours too but Founding the flower would be difficult.
I'm blowing my mind.. this is AMAZING!!! Lolll! Wow! I love it! .. who would have thought yah. Trash bags!! if that's not innovative I don't know WHAT fo say. Mahalo! 😘😍💖
Rosemary Mendez yes u can make a lei using any kind of flowers even fake flowers or silk flowers. What ever nature can give u. Flowers, leaves, and paper flowers too.
Eileen Schuller - It doesn't make a difference. White, black, clear or other color --- whatever you have is fine. Though ti leaf is the traditional method, raffia (soaked in water to make it more pliable & to keep the foliage fresh) has become a standard. Since ti leaf is unavailable most places and raffia is an added expense, plastic is an alternative since most people already have trash/shopping bags in their home.
ok, Three things. 1. What is your bracelet made of, 2. the rock you used to hold down the strips while you braid reminds me of the rock that my sister almost dinged our dad in the head with at The Crater of Diamonds, here in Arkansas (funny memory), 3. Such a pretty Haku Lei. Thank you for sharing!
4 inch and 6 inch using longest length of bag is what i got from it. Please, correct me if I am wrong because I plan to get some bags at the Dollar Tree tmro and flowers from florist to make some for granddaughter's birthday. LOL. Thanks in advance
kukui leaves, using the wide platt. or green leaves similar even maple if you like. look up kukui leaves lei or kukui haku lei up on here to find more.
Can you just put super glue at the ends of the trash bag, and glue the next strand? That way no need to stop mid lei? Also, can someone explain to me whats the difference between one Haku and Lei Po’o ?? Cause I grew up always calling a head lei .. a haku lei. But apparently I was wrong my entire life. Gotta call it one Lei Po’o. Which I know Po’o is head. Can you tell me the difference?
nothing on earth is more romantic than flowers in the hands of a man.
Never too old to learn! My mother dearest has passed and now to do what she did.
I just love watching you weave haku leis. You are incredibly talented. Aloha🤙
The best and easiest tutorial I’ve seen?

So beautiful 😍
Make sure, when you make a lei, make it with love. Always Braddah!! Aloha no!!
I was enjoying the whole video, then the quote. Such a beautiful quote.
Also, is it possible to make a haiku style lei using other flowers?
Rosemary Mendez yes u can make a lei using any kind of flowers even fake flowers or silk flowers. What ever nature can give u. Flowers, leaves, and paper flowers too.
You can use any but like he mentioned in the beginning of the video, this style works best with delicate flowers.
U’i loa!!! Mahalo nui!
Lovely ❤
Mahalo nui loa ❤
How beautiful.
I have a plumeria tree in my front yard, but how do I preserve the flower!?
Nice stories about your hula sisters.
Beautiful! I subscribed ;)
How many flowers does it take to make? Also any suggestions on a website to get them from?
Love ❤️
Love the video but can you share making lei or haku using common mainland flowers too? I cannot come up with that many plumeria. Aloha.
Toni Ow - Try using carnations or mums. These are sturdier flowers that keep fresh for a long time.
Toni Ow - Just make sure they aren't huge carnations/mums. Medium-small (not tiny) are better.
Toni Ow Rose buds work well. You can literally use anything as long as you can secure it in there.
Love it
🙏🏾
Wonderfully instructed thank you! Can one use clear heavy plastic - does it make any difference?
Eileen Schuller - It doesn't make a difference. White, black, clear or other color --- whatever you have is fine.

Since ti leaf is unavailable most places and raffia is an added expense, plastic is an alternative since most people already have trash/shopping bags in their home.
Dose anyone know if this works with fake flowers and how to make the bracelet version of this ?
Does anyone know what’s the name of this plumeria
Hi! Do you know companies that make customized leis... but not with real flowers?
ok, Three things. 1. What is your bracelet made of, 2. the rock you used to hold down the strips while you braid reminds me of the rock that my sister almost dinged our dad in the head with at The Crater of Diamonds, here in Arkansas (funny memory), 3. Such a pretty Haku Lei. Thank you for sharing!
had to make this for my guradrition and this helped ,
Beautiful! Do you make money lei Baku style too? Thank you for the tutorial. Very easy to follow. God bless
I can feel your aloha mahalo😍
What are the lengths of the strips? I'm confused😂 good video I love it❤️
Salaseini Koroi Use the length that is the longest on the bag depending on how big the person's head is.
4 inch and 6 inch using longest length of bag is what i got from it. Please, correct me if I am wrong because I plan to get some bags at the Dollar Tree tmro and flowers from florist to make some for granddaughter's birthday. LOL. Thanks in advance
I think he said each strip is 4-6 inches wide...the length is however long the bag is
how do you make a green head piece without tea leaves?
kukui leaves, using the wide platt. or green leaves similar even maple if you like. look up kukui leaves lei or kukui haku lei up on here to find more.
Leila A - Try ivy leaf (not the poison kind), fern or other sturdy green leaf.
@@tori2dles yes...leather leaf fern is nice too!
I want a haku Lei
Mahalo
Can you just put super glue at the ends of the trash bag, and glue the next strand?

Amori miei💕💝💕💝💕💝💕💝🐋💓🌺🌼💞❇️🙏😇
Your mom is the best
maiau ka hana
U'i, Kuana! Mahalo nui for the explanation! Trash bags! Who knew?!
La'i
Not plastic 😞😖
No, not plastic trash bags! Have you heard of plastic pollution?
We were taught to use ti leaf it just looks trashy with the trash bag. Convenient is just ugly and lazy.
Umm...Seriously a trash bag??? I can see how this video is for people not living in Hawai''i, where they do not have access to Ti or Hala as a base.
