We should not be trying to raid the Pac 12. I say get maybe two more from out there and be done with it. Then move on to the ACC and get between two and four from there.
Oregon isn’t an AAU school doesn’t have a big home tv market and isn’t a historical brand. They have been great recently but that comes from Phil Knight money and he’s 84. We have no idea if his heirs would keep writing checks.
Oregon has some of the lowest research revenue in the nation. It’s like a whopping $12 million, compared to the billions that some other schools bring in. It’s a big fat zero institutionally for the big ten. That said, tv partners and Nike might be able to wedge them in if they thinks it’s profitable. Though I think Stanford or Washington might actually be more likely. Stanford in particular is a wet dream for the university presidents, plus Notre dame would be supportive.
Looking forward to protected rivalries when the Big Ten eliminates divisions. If ND joins you know that MSU and Purdue will be thrilled to play them every year. I just want Illibuck back!
I’d like to see ND and Oregon for their football programs. I think duke would be smart for their BB program alone. I was really impressed with Utah in the rose bowl and they would kinda close some of that huge space game between Nebraska and USC/UCLA. UCLA was a huge BB get for the B10. Maybe Oklahoma St. that’s just a huge miles gap. On the other hand I think Virginia Tech would be a good football get
ND, Oregon, BC, Miami, maybe Stanford, Clemson. I'd like to see the Big 10 to have a deal where they play the military schools regularly as non conference games.
Why in the HELL would we want UVA outside of it being a state school with a large academic endowment? It'd bring ZERO on the football field or get us into a major media market. And for that matter neither would UNC. Stanford only brings a great academic brand and likewise with an endowment. There's nothing enticing about getting into the Bay Area market at this point as the population out there is rapidly declining. Savvy minds would be looking at the South Florida and Atlanta markets in the ACC NOT trying to hold onto old B10 vs Pac 10 tradition.
Research dollars are worth 10x what football dollars bring in. The university presidents are looking big picture and it will factor in. That is why Rutgers was added. Stanford, with one of the largest endowments, will probably be added, especially with ND. I think the B10 will wait till the ACC explodes then get North Carolina and Virginia. Outside of those 4 the B10 could go East or West, depending on what the ACC does
Why Virginia over or Georgia Tech? really doesn't make sense Virginia .. no MEDIA market they play in that Maryland Rutgers and Pen St. doesn't already OWN.. so HARD NO too Virginia .. Now Georgia Tech Brings in GEORGIA and Atlanta Market ... and is deep in SEC Country also is a AAu school...too much of a Win for me in football and more ...
I do question this reporting: a) How will ND be able to capitalize all three of its known ACC commitments to buy them out? My current position is that ND would have to join in full, leave, and pay the full GOR. b) Based on the reported ~$25M per team offer to the new PAC12, that would put OREGON's max value at ~$60M per. Is that worth a membership slot?
It’s been speculated that Oregon would forego taking a share of the tv contract with Knight covering the schools costs just to get in the Big. Oregon could say they won’t take a share until the next contract about 5 to 7 years down the road.
UVA and UNC expand the BIG into the ACC market and both would bring BIG academic standards. Both are excellent basketball schools. Stanford has been good in football and is a tandem addition with ND and is a traditional ND rival. It is also important to add at least one more West Coast school so that UCLA and USC do not have to travel across the country quite so often. The Bay area is still an important market. Remember there are two NFL teams and MLB teams in the Bay area.
Clearly, ND is the biggest chip in the game as far as B1G expansion is concerned--no question about that. They bring both value and a national market for college football. Who beyond ND? Well, that depends on how large the conference should grow? 18? 20? 24? Oregon's the next biggest currently successful team, but Stanford may be the team you have to get to get ND to come aboard. I'm perfectly fine with either of those teams. Beyond that, do you want to go to 20? If so, who are the next targets? Ideally, you're going to want ACC teams to get you a stronger foothold in the South/Southeast. North Carolina is the #1 choice for me from the ACC, especially since Clemson isn't an AAU team and they have made a fair amount of noise about wanting to go to the SEC. And since you need another team from that area, #2 is probably Georgia Tech. Of course, neither NC or GT are going to bring you any more value than Rutgers or Maryland, so I'm guessing 18 is about as big as it gets. So, ND and Stanford or Oregon and quit.
ND, Oregon, Duke, UNC to put the B1G at 20. Locks down the growing Rahleigh?Durham market, furtile recruiting area. Would love to have the only AAU school in Florida.
If the goal is 18 teams = Notre Dame / Stanford (Sorry Oregon). If the goal is 20 teams you have 2 options. A) w/ Notre Dame add Stanford, Oregon and Washington. B) w/o ND then wait till 2035 for UNC, UVA, Oregon and Washington.
Supposably ND is the prime target. IF ND agrees to join ND/ Oregon join in 2024. IF ND declines then it will be Oregon/Washington in 2024. The offer to ND expires on September 1,2024.
And the B1G doesn't need to keep waiting around for Notre Dame. Notre Dame is either going to join the B1G or remain Independent--esp if the ACC gets raided. So in the meantime, we need to SERIOUSLY do our damndest to try and get Miami into the fold. The Miami brand is hot again and it's in South Florida, a prime recruiting region and major media market where many Buckeey alum and fans reside. UNC is a great basketball school as well as Kansas but we know this is really all about football.
California has a law regarding abortion states. Any state entity can not travel to certain Big 10 States etc... Unless a work around is approved leave UCLA and USC on the left coast

I want Carolina, but only if Duke comes with them. I know Duke doesn't bring much, but I hope Carolina honors the greatest rivalry in college basketball.
Carolina would bring NOTHING to the B1G outside of basketball. That was initially an idea that Jim Delamey floated out there since he's an alum of UNC and played point guard there but the reality is this is about markets and the TWO southern markets the B1G should MOST WANT are the Atlanta and Miami ones.
