I watched this soo many times. You expect comedy from this. But you feel? Sadness... but also great joy from someone who is showing emotion towards another who desperately needed it the most. Truly a Scene worthy of matching up to "Love Beads".
Thing is, it is funny first watch that the answer to the problem was Scandlan singing. But when you rewatch it and think about it, it is insanely smart and emotional. Great Sphinx answer as well.
Yeah, I did find it kind of dumb how it made up to be such a massive deal how powerful and as old as time the Sphinx was but then just gets bodied by Umbrasyl.

If you consider the amount of energy needed to proyect such precise illusion all over that area plus the music. That's some great feats of both power and concentration.
Thats the thing too. Before he took Counterspell, he was pure support and comedy. Once Orion/Tiberius left, Sam had to pick up to cover their lost use of Counterspell. When he took it, he became so much stronger. Then, when he got 9th level spells, ohh boy, he was strong. I mean heck, even in the level 20 battle royal, he knew to deal with Keyleth, or they would all lose. Vax decided to help Keyleth win, and if he didn't, Scanlan would have most likely had the forces needed to beat Keyleth. Dude was smarter than he lets on.
Seriously, we need a version with a (either sax or guitar solo) and a second verse, then hit the chorus again. Like, something that could be played on the radio.

I think this is an amazing scene. I mean, Scalan truly gave Kam a gift, not only by reminding him of his love but because in this world you can’t just open a photo album or turn on a cellphone or computer to see your beloved when you’re so far apart. He literally hadn’t seen her for hundreds of years and to see her again before he died was the best gift he could receive.
I’m so used to Sam being such a doofus during the campaigns I tend to forget he’s actually a really talented singer. He’s easily been one of my favourite parts of the animated series 👍
Sam got to flex those lungs twice. And you forget cause he spent Campaign one mainly doing comedy parodies. Here he gets to actually sing and flex his skills. And when he isn't singing about his beads, his song for Kamal and Pike get to show his actual skills.
Also, Sam' Ability to play out goofy chars with deeper souls is not to be underestimated. Sure, most of these are cliches and not masterworks of literature, but the delivery is excellent.
When you realise he was never singing about the Sphinxes. This is absolutely his ode to his feelings about Pike, it just happened to hit the big man where it had to.
Honestly, I don't even think it's about Pike. Scanlan is more in love with the idea of being in love with her than actual affection. The song has a dual meaning, for kammi it is a yearning to be close with his love. For scanlan however it is a yearning for someone TO love who loves him back.

Yeah, he hits on Pike and a whole bunch of others, and most people over looked it until Scandlan had his second death, and laid into them how betrayed he felt. The first time I watched this, I laughed... but I couldn't stop listening, because it's so heartbreakingly beautiful, especially with the context Scanlan has the potential to be more than just a horny loudmouthed comedian. He actually has an emotional wisdom that is stifled by his own insecurity and how everyone around him doesn't expect much from him at all. I hope he realizes that soon, and I felt so sad by what happened after this song…

@@judgedredd2039 I won't say they're rushing the character developments, but due to the limited time they have available to show the story and the characters, they natural had to adjust how they see themselves. It's accurate to say this is an alternative universe to the stream campaign.
The duality of a song! For Kammi it represents a love for his mate whom he cannot see. For Scanlan, it represents the yearning for love within his life, to want someone to care for and care for him. The lyrics take on different meanings depending on who they're applied to and that's just... So great!!
I also think that Scanlan was only able to show that kind of emotional depth and vulnerability because he was the last one left, so no other member of Vox Machina could see. He seems to only ever act mature and heartfelt when none of his friends are around to see.
That's the sad thing about Scanlan. His friends and his love interest don’t take him seriously and none of them are ever around when he has his biggest triumphs so they don’t always believe him. They care about him a great deal but, aside from Pike and Grog, none have ever had a nice thing to say about him to him. Even Keyleth couldn’t think of what they lost when the groups separated. Scanlan has a LOT of depth and brings a lot to the team but most of them don’t recognize it.

Your know, I've thought bards were just wacky seeing form of comic relief. But after watching this, my opinion has completely changed. I was moved to tears.
*HEAVY SPOILERS* The beautiful thing is that we find out later that Ioun's wound can never heal, but in stream, they never had a reason to revisit the Sphinxes, so we never realized that it means they would NEVER be reunited, meaning their separation is that much more sad and heartbreaking. Emphasizing it here is a brilliant stroke of writing both for them, the group and Scanlan specifically. This is basically the first *true love* the group sees: the Briarwoods are evil, all the couples in the group are still figuring it out, but this is deep ancient longing, seeing such a thing changes you, as it did Scanlan.
@@XAndiTVX Absolutely, also the sovereign and his family. But while they were shown, we barely got screentime of the nature of their relationship, unlike the Briarwoods and the Sphinxes.
All these examples are great, but as said, The Sphinxes are the first true example the group is given. Euriel is never really shown to them, but to us, and it is more as a loving father/husband. The Briarwoods, are again, shown to us, not them. As well, while they are a true form of love, willing to plunge the world into darkness for your lover, it is insanely selfish and evil. And while Kima and Allura is also great, it seems more as the beginning of their love story, rather than the end, at least for the show. Osysa and Kamaljiori are the definition of star crossed lovers. They are a true love that can never be reunited. They long for each other, but hold true to their promise, never sinking to depravity to be reuinited. As such, you can feel his pain in this song, as nothing hurts more than not being close to some one you love. and with the added detail of Kamaljiori's death by Umbyosil, which did not happen in campaign, it drives home the idea of them never being reunited, and the joy of him seeing Osysa one last time. While the Briarwoods have the lose angel handedled well, you despise them for how low they will sink for each other. The Sphinxes are ones that hurt because they accept they may never see each other again, and take solace in their memories, and take such joy and seeing the other, even if not in person.
I was sure he was going to do something like this. A Sphinx riddle is usually not straightforward in its solution. But I did not expect the song to hit this good.
Few things hurt more, than being confronted with the one thing you desperately want more than anything in the world, but for whatever reason you know you can't have it.
This was a fantastic episode! Scanlan's incredible song, Amazing fight scenes and a shocking ending(sure, another fakeout) but episode 6 was incredible!! Best episode of the season!!
Scanlan will hit you in the feels a lot more in season 3 when his character arc starts getting a lot more of the spotlight. That gnome has many, many hidden depths that he keeps hidden that are bubbling to the surface as they end up in life-threatening situation after life-threatening situation with the dragons.
I still don't understand how this *works* Like this makes me *feel things* and it has all the ingredients *to fail at these things* Reasons why I shouldn't care: - I don't know this antagonist character well - I don't know his love interest well - This is a musical number in a show with amazing combat, I should be caring more about *that* By this point, I shouldn't be invested *at all* in this musical number But somehow it just fucking *works* I don't fucking know *why*. Maybe because its inserted so diegetically? Because that's a real plus for me: all of this is being done with abilities we know Scanlan has, when normally in bits like this the story just comes to a screeching halt for a moment of uncharacteristic sincerity. But also because its just so fucking kickass? He's stopped this unstoppable force of power with his voice alone, helped to come to an understanding with only his words. Its something legends are written about, and he *does it* without an ass pull of any kind. Or the fact that Scanlan being sincere has been properly built up? Sure, this doesn't resolve his hang ups, but its an opportunity for him to be honest, and a time for him to shine and show off his cool tricks and abilities that make him apart of the gang, because combat is not supposed to be his strong suit. This is. Its just such a well written, well done moment.
I know what your talking about we all know scanlan is an ass who really only looks out for himself however with that being said the growth he's had in just this half of the season 2 alone is amazing and I hope we see more of it to come I know sam said we get to hear others sing this season so I'm curious to see how far he comes with the others
it comes down to how the background details, stuff we take for granted ties into the story. Every character in this world has their own story the party is not privy to, ad those stories come back around the corner. While Vox Machina is adventuring, Allura and Kima slowly build their romance. Before they are born, two lovers are seperated by circumstance, and long to be reunited. While they run for their lives, a king strives to save his family from the dragons. Every person, monster, and animal has a tale that drives this tale, and we get to see the important parts play out. But there are also stories we aren't privy to, but get snippets of, like Brimscythe's destruction, the Briarwoods depravity to stay together, and the Sphinxes heartbreaking tale of longing. Honestly, well done to the writters, cause while fun and well told, Critical role was not THIS well written in the stream.
This. This is the true strength of the bards. No Magic that breaks continents no divine powers no Giant weapons or shields. Just few tunes and words that can reach deepest hearts

This is beautiful and heartbreaking, especially when you realize that Kam was finally able to see Osyssa again one last time and actually for the first time in his life feel pain right before he died
I will actually cry if in the series finale Scanlan gets a montage of best moments, and in the distance Sam Reigel says "what's the worst thing I can be, a Gnome Bard? I'll be that" right before Scanlan's big climax moment.
When I first saw the episode, I literally stared open-mouthed (likely as flabbergasted as the sphinx himself) and CLAPPED when it was over. This was the most on brand thing they could do. I've already rewatched the episode only to hear the song again.
Me when the music starts: "Ah, Scanlan is just gonna slide in a fart joke or something about his balls in a minute." Scanlan: 🎶 "Will we always have to live in a past, staring at the hourglass, and longing for a life... with you..."🎶 Me: 🥺😭😭😭😭😭 A year later, and it still wrecks me.
I cried like a fucking baby when I watched this. My girl and I were supposed to watch season 2 together but we broke up before we could. I loved this part of the episode because it really showed scanlan has a heart.
Sam Reigel is a musical mastermind! The song is fun by how hard it goes and how beautiful its message is. I'd listen to a full version on repeat, that's how good this song is.
You know, even though we've seen a trope like this done many of times in shows and movies. This one I feel does it really well, arguably better because scanlan for most of the show has been a coward trying to avoid conflict and even though when all the heavy hitters were getting knocked off and he still wanted run. He managed to swallow that fear and face the sphinx (can't remember his name) the best way he could and it worked with flying colors. I also love how his song isn't a full track throwing ridiculous amounts of unnecessary fluff. It was relevant to what's going on outside, both sphinx's relationship and how much they both are hurting in about a minutes worth of singing. I absolutely love this scene

🥺ugh this scene... Scanlan was one of the characters I was just meh with... But then this song came out and I was instantly torn by how lonely he actually is
Indeed. Scanlan truly is one of the most layered of all of Vox Machina, with hidden depths to him that the others just don't see. Only Pike has ever glimpsed it and she likes what she sees, and unfortunately only Pike and Grog out of all of Vox Machina actually show Scanlan any real respect or care for his wellbeing TO Scanlan. No one else in the party has ever done that.
When I first heard this, the past memories occurred, and like our big fella here, tears flowed down my cheek, shows that some old times many of us shared dearly will always reopen the scars within our hearts. I often wish to undo the time I messed up years ago, but, it will always be a reminder to do better and move on... After all, what's done, is done.

The beautiful thing is that we find out later that Ioun's wound can never heal, but in stream, they never had a reason to revisit the Sphinxes, so we never realized that it means they would NEVER be reunited, meaning their separation is that much more sad and heartbreaking.
Emphasizing it here is a brilliant stroke of writing both for them, the group and Scanlan specifically.
This is basically the first *true love* the group sees: the Briarwoods are evil, all the couples in the group are still figuring it out, but this is deep ancient longing, seeing such a thing changes you, as it did Scanlan.

But while they were shown, we barely got screentime of the nature of their relationship, unlike the Briarwoods and the Sphinxes.
All these examples are great, but as said, The Sphinxes are the first true example the group is given. Euriel is never really shown to them, but to us, and it is more as a loving father/husband. The Briarwoods, are again, shown to us, not them. As well, while they are a true form of love, willing to plunge the world into darkness for your lover, it is insanely selfish and evil. And while Kima and Allura is also great, it seems more as the beginning of their love story, rather than the end, at least for the show.
Osysa and Kamaljiori are the definition of star crossed lovers. They are a true love that can never be reunited. They long for each other, but hold true to their promise, never sinking to depravity to be reuinited. As such, you can feel his pain in this song, as nothing hurts more than not being close to some one you love. and with the added detail of Kamaljiori's death by Umbyosil, which did not happen in campaign, it drives home the idea of them never being reunited, and the joy of him seeing Osysa one last time. While the Briarwoods have the lose angel handedled well, you despise them for how low they will sink for each other. The Sphinxes are ones that hurt because they accept they may never see each other again, and take solace in their memories, and take such joy and seeing the other, even if not in person.

Of all the characters in Vox Machina to get me right in the goddamn feels, it was Scanlan.

Scanlan will hit you in the feels a lot more in season 3 when his character arc starts getting a lot more of the spotlight. That gnome has many, many hidden depths that he keeps hidden that are bubbling to the surface as they end up in life-threatening situation after life-threatening situation with the dragons.

Like this makes me *feel things* and it has all the ingredients *to fail at these things*
Reasons why I shouldn't care:
- I don't know this antagonist character well
- I don't know his love interest well
- This is a musical number in a show with amazing combat, I should be caring more about *that*
By this point, I shouldn't be invested *at all* in this musical number
But somehow it just fucking *works*
I don't fucking know *why*. Maybe because its inserted so diegetically? Because that's a real plus for me: all of this is being done with abilities we know Scanlan has, when normally in bits like this the story just comes to a screeching halt for a moment of uncharacteristic sincerity. But also because its just so fucking kickass? He's stopped this unstoppable force of power with his voice alone, helped to come to an understanding with only his words. Its something legends are written about, and he *does it* without an ass pull of any kind. Or the fact that Scanlan being sincere has been properly built up? Sure, this doesn't resolve his hang ups, but its an opportunity for him to be honest, and a time for him to shine and show off his cool tricks and abilities that make him apart of the gang, because combat is not supposed to be his strong suit. This is.
Its just such a well written, well done moment.

We may not know Kamaljiori and Osysa very well, but a story of lovers divided by circumstance is one we all understand.
I know what your talking about we all know scanlan is an ass who really only looks out for himself however with that being said the growth he's had in just this half of the season 2 alone is amazing and I hope we see more of it to come I know sam said we get to hear others sing this season so I'm curious to see how far he comes with the others
it comes down to how the background details, stuff we take for granted ties into the story. Every character in this world has their own story the party is not privy to, ad those stories come back around the corner. While Vox Machina is adventuring, Allura and Kima slowly build their romance. Before they are born, two lovers are seperated by circumstance, and long to be reunited. While they run for their lives, a king strives to save his family from the dragons. Every person, monster, and animal has a tale that drives this tale, and we get to see the important parts play out. But there are also stories we aren't privy to, but get snippets of, like Brimscythe's destruction, the Briarwoods depravity to stay together, and the Sphinxes heartbreaking tale of longing. Honestly, well done to the writters, cause while fun and well told, Critical role was not THIS well written in the stream.

So leading up to this scene, I was thinking "Oooh, Scanlan's gonna roast him or insult him in some hurtful way!" And instead I got weepy.
The season is doing so well. Has been tugging at my heart strings. Was crying and laughing this whole scene.
This is beautiful and heartbreaking, especially when you realize that Kam was finally able to see Osyssa again one last time and actually for the first time in his life feel pain right before he died

I will actually cry if in the series finale Scanlan gets a montage of best moments, and in the distance Sam Reigel says "what's the worst thing I can be, a Gnome Bard? I'll be that" right before Scanlan's big climax moment.

When I first saw the episode, I literally stared open-mouthed (likely as flabbergasted as the sphinx himself) and CLAPPED when it was over. This was the most on brand thing they could do. I've already rewatched the episode only to hear the song again.

You know, even though we've seen a trope like this done many of times in shows and movies. This one I feel does it really well, arguably better because scanlan for most of the show has been a coward trying to avoid conflict and even though when all the heavy hitters were getting knocked off and he still wanted run. He managed to swallow that fear and face the sphinx (can't remember his name) the best way he could and it worked with flying colors.
I also love how his song isn't a full track throwing ridiculous amounts of unnecessary fluff. It was relevant to what's going on outside, both sphinx's relationship and how much they both are hurting in about a minutes worth of singing. I absolutely love this scene

🥺ugh this scene... Scanlan was one of the characters I was just meh with... But then this song came out and I was instantly torn by how lonely he actually is
Indeed. Scanlan truly is one of the most layered of all of Vox Machina, with hidden depths to him that the others just don't see. Only Pike has ever glimpsed it and she likes what she sees, and unfortunately only Pike and Grog out of all of Vox Machina actually show Scanlan any real respect or care for his wellbeing TO Scanlan. No one else in the party has ever done that.
Honestly, wounding a sphinx emotionally through song rather than with blades is kne if the most D&D style resolutions I've ever seen on screen
