You are like the "Gardener wannabe whisperer" lol. You make it all sound easy enough for us afraid to try. Thanks for making it as simple as possible with such encouraging delivery. I just subscribed. New fan from Cajun Land South Louisiana. I think we are in the same plant zone. 😊
Awesome content & very informative. My 1st video. It was funny when you were talking about tubers. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and love for gardening & producing food.
New sub here. After going through your channel and videos you’ve made I’m a fan! Thank You for sharing your knowledge and wisdom and your beautiful garden! 🌻
Two minutes into your video and i already learned something new!! I love it! You're definitely my gardening resource! Thank you so much! I really would like to try all these to add to my kitchen to remove from my grocery list 😊
Tons of great information through the entire video that I look forward to putting in use. I'm in 6b so I've still got a while before I start my seeds. Just trying to satisfy my green thumb itch and add to my gardening knowledge. Absolutely gorgeous creator in an equally beautiful yard!
I'm in Charlotte County SW Florida. I always miss the season to grow greens. Thank you for this video! I'm so excited to grow this year. I've just 'refreshed' my garden with new beds and a 'new' design.
Oh my! A ton of info! Thank you! I never thought I would be planting tomatoes in January. I do hope the ones I have in the garden will keep going and we don't get very much frost
Thanks for reminding me to cut back the grape vine and asparagus. So many times we concentrate only on growing and sowing that we forget about maintenance. Great video, very comprehensive.
Thank YOU for that comment because I probably wouldn’t have heard that in the video.. but reading the comments I am glad I saw that because I had forgotten to prune everything this year but there’s still time where I am .. I have grapevines and asparagus out there too
Hi Jerra. Awesome channel! As soon as I saw the wall of luscious greens I knew this would be a useful place for good gardening information. I am in Zone 7 and I want to be a better vegetable gardener. Thank you for being a great resource and happy growing!
I'm excited! So much to plant but I'm going to keep it real & start with a few seeds & plants before I become overwhelmed by it all. You lay out every detail with such ease that one feels confident enough to do this. I hope to bring back a good report, lol. Thanks again.
Hi neighbor! I’m in Brevard County in zone 10a. I just found your TH-cam channel and it inspired me to kickstart some lettuce, carrot, and bush bean crops in my tiny backyard! Unfortunately it’s shaded entirely after 1pm, and the south side of my house is very small considering where the property line is. Hoping the 5-6 hours of morning sun will be enough!
Not only am i obsessed with your garden, but i HAVE to know where you got those earrings!??!!! I need some of those in my life!! 😍 Thank you for all the beautiful gardening tips
I’m in Portland, Oregon zone, 9a. I’ve got some stuff in the garden right now and planted some Danver carrots. Nothing is grown right now it says way too cold outside. So I will try doing some seeds in the garage because there’s a window in there. Nice that you’re in a warmer climate. You have way more gardening options.
The PNW is a very unique growing area. Your lumped with zone 8-9 but have much longer winters than those of us in zones 8 and up down south. I cant imagine that kind of winter. Just move down here like every one else LOL
I’m so glad I found this!!! I started gardening last spring for the first time. I tried sweet potatoes from tubers and pulled them up too soon. Going to try again. I’m in zone 8 Georgia
I just came across your channel this morning and really benefited from the information. I'm in South Florida and happy to find guidance that applies to my growing zone. Will check out your website. Thank you and I look forward to your future videos.
Im soo glad you mentioned starting corn indoors. Im in se Louisiana thats the ONLY way i can get corn to harvest is by starting inside then transplanting outdoors lol. Thank you!
I recently ordered some seed and was impressed both with the shipping time and the packaging. I would suggest that since the packets are clear zip-lok, rather than a printed label attached to the outside, you could self print a ticket placed on the inside. Cheaper and it would take less time. I am placing a second order.
Holy cow thank you for this. I'm in zone 8 in coastal Carolinas and it's difficult to find tips for gardners who don’t get a harsh winter. Even within the state, we are an outlier, everyone else has a chance of freeze and even snow. Here we haven’t had snow since 1980. January and February is cold but never below 30. Then it goes back to the 70s and up
I live in central NC, just 2hrs west of the coast and we get snow almost every year. Last year we didn't. But were gauranteed temps below freezing numerous times throught winter. The coast may be different.
Reference growing sweet potato slips in grow bags… how many slips would you put in a 10 gallon bag? I don’t see sweet potato link. Thank you in advance! Great (once again) video so informative I’m gonna watch it again tomorrow and take notes lol
Thanks for not making me wait !!! I just received your slips and didn’t want to keep them in water too long. Look forward to your upcoming video as I’m trying to start my own slips with purple sweet potatoes that I got at a farmers market. :)
Could you please give guidance on size of grow bags for different produce. What size do you use for potatoes? And how many do you plant in different size bags? I have never used them but I think I want to try them. Thanks.
I’m so glad to have found your channel. I’m in. North FL and your tips are extremely helpful!!! Tfs. I look forward to more videos and your live sessions. 💖
Thank you for all the info! I’m new to Florida and since we move around so much it’s hard to figure out how to grow every time we move to a new climate. We are renting, so I’m trying to grow in raised beds and containers and vertically to get the most out of the space I have. I’m hoping Florida will be easier than trying to grow a garden where we were stationed in North Dakota😂
Our date or zone is now 7, according to the department of agriculture but prior to the change we were 6a-6b and still planted potatoes in the ground in January
You mentioned pruning your asparagus now. I had read to wait until they are all brown, and some of my plants are still green. So should i still prune now or wait until it all dies back?
If your in a warm winter climate, it doesn't get cold enough to make them turn brown so we have to manually cut them down ourselves to mimic a "cold period". So yes, I like to cut mine down in January.
Diggin that Mars light! What model are you using and how do you like it so far? My 2-tier 4 led shop lights are working well. I bought some china leds from temu in hopes of finding a good and cheap light source. Mix results during initial set-up but have to fully test with light meter to get true opinion. Thanks to you (❤) my seedling sizes are now comparible to yours after switching from potting mix to 50/50 perlite-coco coir and adding nutes when leaves appear. I totally feel the same way about gardening and ❤ how we all share the same pain/struggle/losses/frustration/lessons/knowledge/tips/accomplishments/happiness/rewards/passions. My first gardening season ends mid-summer and I'm SO PUMPED to hit the ground running with the help of your Jan guide! Thank you again for tips and advice. I wish you a very Happy and bountiful 2024! 🎉
Aww thank you! I love my Mars Hydro because it is way more intense which has done wonders for light hungry plants like tomatoes and peppers. I have the 3x3 150 wat model. The 5000K shop lights work too. I used those for many years. But I do notice my tomato seedlings with the Mars Hydro have much thicker stems and longer initial seedling leaves than when I was using shop lights.
Ok my question 🙋♀️ Oh I gotta go to your website thank you!!!! My banana and Barbados cherry got damaged by a freeze And no fruit this year maybe 20 cherries between 3 trees and mostly the bird had them So curious about pruning And ways to get those cherries and bananas next year!!! Thank you
Once your last spring frost date has passed, remove the cold damaged parts and fertilize well to encourage lots of new healthy growth. Also water them regularly. Barbados cherry is triggered to start flowering and producing from extra water and fertilizers.
In Ohio my mustard plants will bloom the yellow flowers even when it’s close to zero degrees outside.. it’s kind of crazy looking outside to see it.. I hope one day to move to Florida, would be nice to concentrate on palm trees, citrus trees, tropical plants/flowers and especially outdoor air plants
My monthly garden guides are geared towards south USA zones 8 and up. However, my guides on how to grow a specific crop is applicable to everyone. The requirements and method for growing a plant is the same no matter where your located. Just have to adjust the timing.
Thanks for the info on the sweet potatoes (all the info actually) but i said sweet potatoes because i harvested around 90-120 days from growbag. There are ridiculously skinny and twisted. Have no idea if they can even be eaten! Looking forward to your sweet potato guide! I also have some in ground. Guess ill wait the 6 mos before harvesting?
I just lift one side and prop it over the top of the shelving unit during the day, so not very hard at all. Since its in my patio with concrete floor, I just bring the water hose inside and water everything with a shower wand attachment.
Thank you this was awesome! What do you suggest, for my Lemon Myer Tree I bought in May, still in a container and a Tangelo tree a couple years old still in container? Continue to fertilize? Cover for any freezes as well correct?
If you can bring them indoors when it freezes, even better. Otherwise for sure cover them up. Smaller trees are more susceptible to cold damage than mature older trees. And yes, continue to fertilize.
Question… will cutting an infected leaf off a Squash Plant be a problem the afternoon before low temperatures. I am in zone 10a in Florida. Getting into the 40’s again tonight. I wondered if it would damage the plant. Thank you
I'm 10A too and 40's is not enough to cause significant damage. Kind of depends what cultivar your growing too. If the squash your growing got cold damage from the last few cold fronts in December, then dont cut.
To be honest I use the cheapest bags of compost I can find at Home Depot. They are a yellow and white colored bag. Some people report they find it at Lowes too. Other people report their local store doesn't carry the same brand. For potatoes, I do like to add in some amendments to make it fluffier.
It depends how cold it is. If sowing seeds indoors, grow mats greatly help speed up germination for warm season crops like tomatoes and eggplants. Once they germinate its ok to remove the heat mats if the room is warm. However, right now I am sowing/growing warm season crops outdoors in mini green houses. I keep the heat mats on the whole time to warm up the greenhouse because its cold outside.
For starting seeds, I do have grow lights or shop lights in mine. I don't add grow lights for already established plants that I'm just trying to keep warm during the winter.
Well....I'm in FL so snakes are part of life here LOL. I have a small black garden snake that lives in my garden. As much as I dislike snakes, he is the reason why I don't have a rodent problem and I heard snakes are territorial. I would rather have him in my garden than some other type of snake. I just keep telling myself he is good for the garden and have got used to it.
Yes I do. My Florida native soil is sandy. However, I have been using wood chips extensively in my garden for years which has built up 12-15 inches of rich composted down soil. I get a delivery for free from chip drop about once a year. I just got one 2 weeks ago and made a whole TH-cam video tutorial about it. I'm currently editing that video and will post on my channel soon. Wood chips was the #1 game changer for my garden.
I'm like you lol i only grow my pots ans sweet pots in grow bags lol i swear its the easiest and they just thrive!! And for the last 3 years ive gotten the biggest harvest but ive never done the slips like you and so many others suggest.. ive always just planted the whole sweet potatoe like a reg pot once its starting to sprout and they do just fine lol maybe thats considered cheating lol. But ive also bought sweet pot vines from a nursery bc i love them in hanging baskets but i didnt know they produced potatoes too!!! It just said sweet potato vine lol not plant. I brought them inside and one of my dogs knocked my pot over and it was slap full of little sweet pots lol.
You can most definitely just plant the whole sweet potato once it sprouts. My question is, did they grow a bunch of potatoes crammed into each other? That's why I separate them into individual slips instead of planting a whole potato that has several slips. If that is not an issue then... I'll probably start planting the whole thing too. Less work LOL. So many ways to do the same thing so nice to hear what my viewers do.
The one in this video is a dwarf cultivar. It still gets 4-5FT tall but is much more manageable than the regular one that gets 8FT tall for me. I have seeds on my website www.jerrasgarden.com
Roselle does not like the cold so sow seeds indoors 8 weeks before your last spring frost date to get a head start. Then transplant them out when all danger of frost has passed and temps start getting back into 75F or above.
Yes. I used to live in Galveston and gardened there too lol. The timing of planting is similar and we also have very sandy soil here in FL. You will have to work on building the soil by adding a lot of organic material or grow in containers etc... I used to get free wood chips from chip drop which was a game changer for my garden and helped me build the soil, but that's getting harder to obtain. Can ask local tree cutting companies or check if your local trash collection has free compost for the community.
I do. Right now I'm out of stock. I'll have more in about 2-3 weeks. Here is a link: jerrasgarden.myshopify.com/products/tainung-64-sweet-potato-slips?_pos=14&_sid=a67db589b&_ss=r
Colder climates have a longer growing period to grow strawberries from seed etc... here in hot climates its the heat that kills our strawberry plants so starting from bare roots really helps.
some things are very slow growing and take a solid 2-3 months to be a nice big size for transplanting like onions, peppers, and eggplants. Unless you plant it on the smaller side which I don't like because that increases risk that it will die. Tomatoes take anywhere between 8-12 weeks depending on growing conditions. If you know of a way to speed germination and growth up, let me know.
This guide is what you should be doing when your 1-3 months away from your last spring frost date. If your not sure when is your last spring frost date, then enter your zip code into this website: www.plantmaps.com
Hi Jerra, Love your egg-plant earrings. Exquisite! Cheers, Albert
Thank you! 😊
My roma tomatoes had beautiful foliage and huge plants...but just a few tomatoes...I will have to look at your guide!!!! Houston Texas here
Try shaking the flowers to pollinate them and fertilizing with more phosphorus and potassium to support flower/fruit production
Or maybe too much nitrogen?
You are like the "Gardener wannabe whisperer" lol. You make it all sound easy enough for us afraid to try. Thanks for making it as simple as possible with such encouraging delivery. I just subscribed. New fan from Cajun Land South Louisiana. I think we are in the same plant zone. 😊

Thanks for reminding me to cut back the grape vine and asparagus. So many times we concentrate only on growing and sowing that we forget about maintenance. Great video, very comprehensive.
Yup! That's what I am doing this weekend.

Wait longer next time for sure. Also varies according to the variety. I mean, they are edible but I like to just harvest them when they are bigger.
If you wrap your shelves to keep them warm, how much of a pain is it to water them?
I just lift one side and prop it over the top of the shelving unit during the day, so not very hard at all. Since its in my patio with concrete floor, I just bring the water hose inside and water everything with a shower wand attachment.

I really like organic granular fertilizers like Espoma or Jobes brand.

Do you have a lot of sand in your property, and you do, how do you manage planting in the sand
This is my first winter where I'm really into growing my own food. I'm in Rhode Island, any suggestions on what i can start growing now🌱Thank you
When is your last spring frost date? Trying to figure out how much more "winter" you have.

How do you keep your tithonia small? I had to remove one when it reached 10’ x 8’ in a way too small space😖 it was gorgeous for all sorts of bees!
The one in this video is a dwarf cultivar. It still gets 4-5FT tall but is much more manageable than the regular one that gets 8FT tall for me. I have seeds on my website www.jerrasgarden.com
You you spray your tomatoes with peroxide?
Yes, 1 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water to treat for leaf diseases like powdery mildew and blight.
Where can i find seed potatoes?
Check local nurseries and Facebook groups. Or search for seed potato companies online.
When is the best time to set sweet potatoes Ines out in Houston, Texas?
sweet potato slips can be planted after all danger of frost has passed so depends on your last spring frost date
Hi Jerra❤. When is the best month to plant Roselle. I love in Jacksonville Florida
Roselle does not like the cold so sow seeds indoors 8 weeks before your last spring frost date to get a head start. Then transplant them out when all danger of frost has passed and temps start getting back into 75F or above.
@@JerrasGarden Thanks so much 😊 You are a inspiration. 🤗
I’m in Orange Park & my roselle seeds just arrived today! 🎉❤
@@JerrasGarden Thanks Jerra 😊 I planted indoors & they sprouted. YAY
Does this also work for south texas zone 9b sorry 10 a coastal area . Soil is sand
Can I grow broccoli in my basement since it's still cool and not hot down there?
Yes if you can give it a lot of light
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thanks!
I’m in Zone 4
I'm definitely ahead of you my several months when it comes to planting for spring
You should invite John Kholer and James Prigioni to your garden.
LOL I have been a huge fan of them for years. I actually chatted with John Kholer at the Heirloom seed expo this last September.
What zone are you in?
10A
What is blood mule?
Blood meal is an organic fertilizer high in nitrogen.
Do you sell sweet potato slips? Im in central Fl...new 10a
I do. Right now I'm out of stock. I'll have more in about 2-3 weeks. Here is a link: jerrasgarden.myshopify.com/products/tainung-64-sweet-potato-slips?_pos=14&_sid=a67db589b&_ss=r
Strawberries from seed are so rewarding though.. Strawberry fields forever, if you let them…
Colder climates have a longer growing period to grow strawberries from seed etc... here in hot climates its the heat that kills our strawberry plants so starting from bare roots really helps.
If I lived in zone 10a, I’d grow vanilla
I had a vanilla plant for many years and it never grew...not sure why but I am no expert when it comes to orchids.
I LIKE YOUR RAP
Zone 7 😢 i have to wait still
Yup. I'm a few months ahead of you. You can start getting ideas though.
Nothing takes three or two months to be ready for transplanting, save celery.
some things are very slow growing and take a solid 2-3 months to be a nice big size for transplanting like onions, peppers, and eggplants. Unless you plant it on the smaller side which I don't like because that increases risk that it will die. Tomatoes take anywhere between 8-12 weeks depending on growing conditions. If you know of a way to speed germination and growth up, let me know.
when do i start seeds in ohio🤨
This guide is what you should be doing when your 1-3 months away from your last spring frost date. If your not sure when is your last spring frost date, then enter your zip code into this website: www.plantmaps.com
