A four mana tutor I DO recommend is mythos of brokos. It’s only for sultai, but in comes with regrowthing a permenent from your grave (or can be modal as a double regrowth)
@@NitpickingNerds Final parting is another solid tutor, 5 mana, but it is entomb + tutor, and in any graveyard deck is a one card setup both halves of a combo. It is fun in an artifact deck to fetch thopter foundry and send sword of the meek to the yard at the same time too.
Ashnods alter has almost as many if not more combos than phyrexian, mostly with reassembling skeleton and nim death mantle. I really recommend buying one over phyrexian if you’re on any budget
And if your deck is using ashnods altar for any form of combo, throw in a pitiless plunder, ashnods + plunder will in effect replicate phyrexian altar for you, and net you 3 mana per sac
I agree. Ashnods has more combo potential in mono black. Most aristocrats decks are mono black. So you’re better off running ashnod’s most of the time.

As someone who owns one dockside extortionist, I’d recommend if you’re either a spellslinger deck or you have a fair amount of instant and sorceries to get a copy of Storm kiln artist which makes a treasure every time you cast an instant or sorcery
Eladamri's Call, Altar of Bone & Chord of Calling are so good. Chord got that reprint which is why it's affordable...kind of can't believe Eladamri's Call is only $5. People should get a copy or two of that one before it goes up
I use Chromatic Lantern in my Kenrith deck. It seeks to win with the white lifegain ability or the black recursion ability, but before that, it will usually use a lot of blue mana to draw into one of the wincons. So I first need all of my mana to be blue, and then switch to either all whit or black mana.
scheming symmetry is amazing and I think people overestimate the downside, particularly in edh. Ostensibly the downside is your opponent gets to tutor for free, but there are many ways to abuse the top of library condition (mill them, draw the card yourself first etc) and even if you play it 'fairly' your opponent can only kind of guess as to what answer they need to pull for your tutor target. The fact it costs 1 mana makes it very easy to trigger a draw somehow on your turn to get the card, and most of the time when you tutor you do it when you know you need a specific card to win or live, whereas your opponent just gets a free tutor at a random time where they might not be just a silver bullet or combo piece from winning. Finally a huge advantage is you choose the opponent! Thats huge! Pick the guy who's losing, you'll make a friend, pick the guy who's tapped out, pick anyone but the blue player, pick the player you know doesnt run combos in their deck, this is actually a huge deal in a political FFA environment, in some ways it can actually make scheming symmetry BETTER than vampiric tutor in commander, how mind blowing is that!
You gotta dig a little deeper for some of those. For example, have you heard of ... 7:10 Battle Hymn ? 12:50 Eldritch Evolution ? 14:30 Signal the Clans ?

The biggest thing to mention about Warstorm Surge is that the creature deals the damage, not Warstorm Surge, so you can take advantage of effects that deal with "when creature deals damage."
When I had a Korvold deck, Brass's Bounty I counted as a win condition, because of how much it would pump Korvold. Last night, I was playing a Turbo Fog Progenitus deck (I call it turbo Prog). I played Brass's Bounty with Seven lands out in Turn 5. Turn six I took out a player because I had an Anger in the graveyard, a Blood Mist, and could give Prog +1/+1. Another suggestion for a sub for Finale of Devastation: Defense of the Heart.
Warstorm Surge is very odd. All the similar cards you mentioned the card deals the damage, Warstorm has the creature that entered deal the damage, which can be just crazy if you happen to be playing with a lot of deathtouch or any creature that has an odd "when [this] deals damage..." ability.
wishclaw talisman is insane in artifact-decks if you can just sacrifice it when the ability goes on the stack (e.g. with breya, thopter foundry, krark-clan ironworks, ...). You get to tutor, your opponent doesn't get it and you can easily get it out of your graveyard again with something like Myr Retriever. Very easy to abuse
re: Dockside - if we're talking more like a (casual/janky), red, artifacts matter reason to eyeball an expensive goblin, rather than only insane ramp.. these cheap cards could potentially also be relevant for you: Toggo Goblin Kaboomist Academy Manufactor Seize the Spoils Pirate's Pillage Reckless Endeavor Xorn
I feel like Runaway Steam-Kin can go as a functional Dockside in some brews. I know it can't do the thing, but it saves up 3 mana for later, and on a 2 drop, I think that's pretty solid. Bonus points with Hardened Scales.
Buying non-english versions of all the cards mentioned saved me around 30% of the entire combined price in English on tcgplayer and it gives you some flare if you're into that...
I use goblin bombardment in Zurzoth Chaos rider with Devil tokens. Two instances of 1 dmg at any target is so good for just saccing a 1/1. Not to mention the insanity when you double damage..

Sorcery speed utors like Beseech the queen are only good if you are on a serious budget. You can include Diabolic tutor and Dark Petition and even Razaketh's rite in this too. that last one can be cycled away. Chromatic lantern lets your lands tap for any mana, that can never be overrated unless in maybe 2 colour decks. I do play it in my izzet deck and I don't regret it and that deck needs coloured mana, Niv-Mizzet Parun, which is one of my wincosts costs 6 coloured mana, UUURRR is it's cost, so your sol ring or mind stone are completely useless in that scenario.

4 mana tutors are a thing I also try to avoid. They generally need to be better than Diabolic Tutor (IE let me cast the card for free or something) to be worth looking at, but I wouldn't laugh at someone who played it in casual. In that vein, I think Bring to Light is great in a 5 colour deck. It's one thing to tutor for a card, but getting to cast it for free as well is just ducky, it can be a decent board wipe for example, or a combo piece (5 mana can be almost anything that you'd want). Edit: I really like the Signet Lands in higher power decks that likely run a fair bit of colourless ramp/Ancient Tomb. These are almost always better than the Lorwyn fixers, and are dirt cheap. I use them in a 3 colour deck, and I wouldn't think of replacing them with the Lorwyn option, Signet Lands are just better most of the time. I suppose if my deck needed more devotion to a colour, they might make more sense, but as is it mostly needs 1 or maybe 2 of a colour to cast all but 1 card which I hate casting. I think they might be my favourite lands to play turn 2, since I can often cast my Commander early if I drew enough ramp. The big problem with the Lorwyn ones I find is that they are so limited in how they can fix, due to the coloured cost, making them bad in decks with 3 or more colours.
A few things: Y’all missed the caveat on Beseech the Queen that the tutor target has to be less than or equal to the number of lands you have, so no grabbing Necropotence t1 off dark rit+beseech; Second: I figure this would be the place to nitpick, but there are a few decks outside of stringent 5c decks that want Chromatic Lantern, and these are things like Sen Triplets, Xanathar or potentially even a theft-focused Ragavan.
Fun fact I have a dockside by a trade but my playgroup don’t play many artifacts or enchantments, which makes it not very good in my pirate tribal deck because I allready have enough treasure also... it doubles the price of my deck :).

@@Fluffy_Kun Are you implying you wouldn't play a 2 mana create a 1/1 goblin gain 3 mana of any color? That's still strong, even in this case it lets you play a big evasive pirate one turn sooner. Also as a good friend, if they are playing literally anything that isn't green, you should convince them to add more artifacts. Mana rocks are just too good to not play
@@jhemp I would but I found in my only red deck currently that it has been not very good, that cards vs me would be crazy as I love my artifacts but my friends love creature decks and combo. It just not good enough to take a slot of 1 of my pirates as I play 30 and have u seen how low my curve is and... how much mana I produce - dockside isn’t what the deck needs currently.
@@jhemp creature, landfall, combo decks they don’t really use artifacts enough for it to be really good. It’s just free creature in a hyper efficient tribal deck on a budget.

Chromatic lantern is honestly something i think most sen triplets decks should run, but beyond that the cards ehh. Oh also coalition relic should just go into all atraxa decks, its a literal sol ring but better with her on the battlefield

you make me want to play commander so bad. i play J A N K. i also play modern and legacy heavily with about 20,000 dollars in decks. but as competitive as i Play, Commander to me is the format where i can play "unplayable" cards. and I dont want to use modern and legacy cards in edh, I love cards like this, where they are strong enough to get some love, yet spicy enough to throw opponents off.
If you're on a budget just proxy Also wishclaw talisman is just excellent if you run game ending combos. Just chuck it down and tutor for 1 when you need it. No downside if you just win the game. Honestly this card will eventually not be budget because at the very least a lot of turbo cedh decks will want this.

I saw chromatic lanter while making my hamza deck and thought this card isn't bad but what even is the point of this card and giving a second look paying 3 mana you get a return on your investment on turn 7 at the earliest i could be wrong but i don't get the point that card at all

Love the recommendations but I'd just like to say I use chromatic lanter in my ragavan deck ,sometimes one treasure isn't enough to cast opponents spells ,especially in my pod where no one else likes to play red :c
Brass’ Bounty is nowhere close to a budget version of Dockside. It’s so expensive it’s not even in the same category. Couldn’t agree more with your assessment of Chromatic Lantern. Would never run it except MAYBE a 5 color deck. I have a friend whose obsessed with it and runs it in literally every deck he owns. It’s pretty funny.
Goblin bombardment is insane. I remember when that card was like 8 or 9 bucks. Glad they reprinted it.

This card isn’t the same as dockside extortionist, but treasonous ogre can give you that all or nothing one big turn. It’s a great blowout piece.

One thing that's fun with scheming symmetry is to play it during the first main phase then in combat swing with etali, then profit

I've found Lantern is a must in Reaper King. We need more scarecrows, so I don't have to use 5 color changelings as much.
I like using Skyclave Relic and Chromatic Orrey in my Saheeli Artifacts deck and it works so sweet

Second: I figure this would be the place to nitpick, but there are a few decks outside of stringent 5c decks that want Chromatic Lantern, and these are things like Sen Triplets, Xanathar or potentially even a theft-focused Ragavan.

Fun fact I have a dockside by a trade but my playgroup don’t play many artifacts or enchantments, which makes it not very good in my pirate tribal deck because I allready have enough treasure also... it doubles the price of my deck :).
I have never seen dockside be bad
@@NitpickingNerds well it’s 2 mana get 2-3 treasure that’s bad when I can play another pirate with evasion and hit them and generate more value by Malcolm etc.
@@Fluffy_Kun Are you implying you wouldn't play a 2 mana create a 1/1 goblin gain 3 mana of any color? That's still strong, even in this case it lets you play a big evasive pirate one turn sooner.
Also as a good friend, if they are playing literally anything that isn't green, you should convince them to add more artifacts. Mana rocks are just too good to not play
@@jhemp I would but I found in my only red deck currently that it has been not very good, that cards vs me would be crazy as I love my artifacts but my friends love creature decks and combo. It just not good enough to take a slot of 1 of my pirates as I play 30 and have u seen how low my curve is and... how much mana I produce - dockside isn’t what the deck needs currently.
@@jhemp creature, landfall, combo decks they don’t really use artifacts enough for it to be really good. It’s just free creature in a hyper efficient tribal deck on a budget.

Chromatic lantern is honestly something i think most sen triplets decks should run, but beyond that the cards ehh. Oh also coalition relic should just go into all atraxa decks, its a literal sol ring but better with her on the battlefield
Lantern does fit in Sen Triplets but that is a special exception!

you make me want to play commander so bad. i play J A N K. i also play modern and legacy heavily with about 20,000 dollars in decks. but as competitive as i Play, Commander to me is the format where i can play "unplayable" cards. and I dont want to use modern and legacy cards in edh, I love cards like this, where they are strong enough to get some love, yet spicy enough to throw opponents off.

Also wishclaw talisman is just excellent if you run game ending combos. Just chuck it down and tutor for 1 when you need it. No downside if you just win the game. Honestly this card will eventually not be budget because at the very least a lot of turbo cedh decks will want this.

I saw chromatic lanter while making my hamza deck and thought this card isn't bad but what even is the point of this card and giving a second look paying 3 mana you get a return on your investment on turn 7 at the earliest i could be wrong but i don't get the point that card at all

Love the recommendations but I'd just like to say I use chromatic lanter in my ragavan deck ,sometimes one treasure isn't enough to cast opponents spells ,especially in my pod where no one else likes to play red :c

Brass’ Bounty is nowhere close to a budget version of Dockside. It’s so expensive it’s not even in the same category.
Couldn’t agree more with your assessment of Chromatic Lantern. Would never run it except MAYBE a 5 color deck. I have a friend whose obsessed with it and runs it in literally every deck he owns. It’s pretty funny.
