My heart dropped when you said 30 years ago. Ugh. Had one of these. Remember these for sale at Al & EDs. lol....
Ouuuh yeah....30 years... and my three punch amps are still working since 1994🤓🤓🤓
You right bro
We old!😅
@@JESUSISCALLINGYOU7 just a little bit 🤏
@danielsgarageaudioandvehic8993 in 1999 I was 12.
I had one of these on a 18" kicker 8 ohm svc sub.
In a 3 1/2 cu ft sealed box in my 1998 explorer .
I fell in love with car audio that very day ❤️
Love old school 💎
I have 2 punch 120a2 now
And I want to pair them with two old school subs in my Procharged 1993 svt cobra
My favourite system I ever owned was a Punch 60 and Punch 40 combo in my 1983 Mustang GT.
The 60 ran my Macrom mids and highs and a bridged center channel with a potentimeter to adjust the level. The 40 ran 4 Punch 8" subs at 4 ohms. It was such a well balanced sound system. It scored a 34 on the RTA with no extra equalization.
Badass, I'd like to have heard that. I actually run beryllium mids and tweets out of a set of yamaha ns1000s. The mid alone weighs over 10lbs I think.
Similar. 87 Notch back. 100 on 3 10's, 60 on a 3 way front setup using OZ
I got to punch 60x2 I'm going to use for mids and highs and I might copy that Center idea
back then, you just couldn't go wrong with rockford. They were always a little pricy, but they always delivered tons of clean, reliable power at well over their rated specs. not surprised they still have a massive cult following after all these years. I still have a few myself, all in working condition, and still buy them when I come across a good deal.
I had my very first RF amp self destruct a year ago - I'm thinking my jl audio sub got hot, shorted, and that destroyed the amp. Oh well chit happens. I'm still a big fan and now I have a larger 1000 watt RF mono amp ready to install. Have had tons of different RF amps over the years...
These Rockford's were absolute animals. We sold so many of them at Classic Stereo & Video.
The Rockford head units were some of the very best CD players that ever hit cars, too.
my first system was a Punch 15" sub with a Punch 40IX DSM bridged in a sealed box with an external low pass crossover, sony mids and highs and a clarion head unit... in a 1985 Honda CRX SI in 1997. I loved that setup. Thanks for the nostalgic stroll down RF memory lane!
Yep those old CRX installs were always impressive. They were so small, you really didn't need a lot of power or speakers to fill them up. I had a 85' accord 2 DR hatch and my friend had an 88 accord 2 DR sedan. He had a rockford Peanut powering some MB quart separates in a SQ install. dang those were the days!!
Pretty good cars, but terrible for an SQ system. Such rattle traps. Lol
@@MuvoTX Thats awesome man , the same thing my friends and I drove as well back then !!
@@MuvoTXHad a 91 CRX with Alpine coax in door, Alpine head unit, and a RF peanut. Sub was simple with a JBL GTO804 and Alpine monoblock for ~300Watts. Not for SQ at all, just something for decent sound. A hole with one leg in a rusty black GMC 2500 and mower trailer ran over the hood with me in it while rounding a corner. Dammit.
I had a used 60DSM from my buddy that worked at Best Buy. He also sold me a Q Logic band pass box with 2 JL 10’s. My S10 blazer pounded with that setup! Sometimes the bass would make the disc man skip!
LMAO...I still have a Punch 45 and a Peanut (Punch 30) and THEY WORK!!!! They're going back into a 1989 Civic Si waiting for a rebuild.
We ran off the Peanut, a 10 inch woofer, two 6.5 mid bass, two 3.5 mid range and two tweeters....NOBODY believed us when we played it!!!! LMFAO...Insane product!!!
Great video!!!!
Amazing how we built slamming systems with so little power back in the day.
Hey , I've always preferred some clean Class A/B amplifiers !! They sound so kuch better than the newer amps of today
yep, one of my fav systems was in '92... two radioshack 15"'s in 11cuft tuned to 24Hz, running off of 65W ea. my friends always told me they could tell what song i was playing by yhe bassline from over 1/8th mile (distance from our school entrance to the parking lot). 🔊🔊
i dislodged lots of flappy rusted pieces of sheet metal from that car. 😂 simple days, back when mdf was $8 a sheet and i didnt need back seats.
Yup. Even 50W was crazy loud!😅
Glad to see the tests done at 12v cause even with newer equipment it's a more realistic test
You probably know or remember that I absolutely love the DSM series! It's hard to be the power series that came out after this in the gray chassis. The 50x² and 50m, since they're not needed in cheater mode, have so much reserve power that their sound quality is absolutely amazing! As always, thanks for doing these!
YES!!! This was my first real amp I ever bought. I had a crappy job paying 5.50 an hour washing dishes. I saved for months to get this amp and 2 kicker 10 inch boxes that had the built-in tweeters. Like a month later, I went to the beach and remember driving up and down the main drag and everyone had their systems bumping. Good times. Would love to get another just for nostalgia.
People thought we were crazy when we would do a 60 on the subs and a 100 on the highs. A little twists on the eq’s and systems came to life👍
Yup! Those were the good times. Back in the late 90s, I sold my friend two 12" Kicker Free-Air subs I got used months prior. We moved them with just a Rockford Fosgate Punch 45.2, and it rattled his Hyundai Tiburon so hard. We were blown away. He had a JVC El Kameleon head unit, too. I loved that thing!
One of the loudest sound systems i had ever heard back in the 90's had the same amp on two 12" JLAudio subs in a bandpass (Hot Box). Damn thing would move the fluid around in your ears and part your hair down the middle. Lol. Gave me mad respect for Rockford at the time. I miss those days. Great video Big D !! Awesome!!
Hahahah!😅
I had 2 of those in 95 powering 4 12” MTX subs. They were great amps.😊😊
Impressive how that 30 year old amp is that even across channels
well the input level/gains are independent, so you can scope em or meter them and dial them in perfectly. whereas, today's gear is mostly using stereo gain pots, so the deviation from the left channel to right is essentially the deviation between the two halves of the pot.
unfortunately, with stereo pots, balance is not something yhat can be adjusted, and they would need much more expensive pots to get them closer to identical.
Love it. My first new amp was a 40DSM in 1993 or 4. Kinda surprised this 60 didn't like 2 ohm mono. Ran my 40 at 2 ohm mono for many years. Got hot but never quit. 💪 Only thing that eventually took mine out of service was the remote turn on terminal solder joint broke off of the board.
The 2 ohms on the Dyno is a resistive load and speakers will produce a reactive load so it’s understandable but I will say the 40 and 200 DSM models I tested before had no problem at 2 ohms mono 🤷♂️
I didn't have any of the old Punch amps but I do still have my Series 1 4600x from around 1994 which I've used in several vehicles over the years. And it still works, I recently hooked it up to test it.
I never had the money in the early 90s to buy a rockford amp ...i got my licenses and first car in 93 ...my cousin got a punch 75 and 2 mtx blue thunder 12s in a mazda b2000 mini truck / lowrider /slammed .....and it was loud ....i started working when i was 15 at min wadge it was 4.75 an hour ....but by time i was 18 i had a good enough job to finally pick up a very good used punch 150 and other than those plugs ....these are my favorite amp of all time ....i ran everything from 2 8in mtx bt ....to a jL audio 15 with mine ....sold several vehicles threw the years with upgraded audio in them but would always state everything goes but the amp ....finally let a very good freind talk me out of it about 10years ago now and i have kicked myself every since ....things just make power and in my case never gave min of trouble ....thats 20 years of service outta an electronic device ....thats saying alot .....
Killer amp, one of my old school faves.
Man, this brings back memories. Had a 40, 60, and 100 DSM in my truck back in the 90s. Fun times, the 100 DSM drove two 12" subs (wired stereo @ 2 ohms) no problem.
I had the Punch 40 running 2 Fosgate series 1 12s in separate sealed boxes in an 89 honda accord 2 door for my first system in 97 when I was 17. Good times
Back in 1991, I had this amp called the Hott Setup 2.125. It was not exactly cheap. And some people even said it was made by Orion. But it never really impressed. Despite being rated at 125Wx2, it just didn’t seem to hit very hard. Eventually, I replaced it with a Punch 60 DSM when it came out. And OMG, what a difference it made. Despite being rated at less than a quarter the output, it flat-out blew that Hott Setup out of the water!
Crazy how little power we used back in early 90s but i remember guys still having very loud systems. Miss those simple days lol
🎯
Back then most woofers were +90dB @ 1Watt , they had smaller coils, lighter cones and magnets. Last week i took a look at one of my „ newer „ HX2 subs which feature heavy cones big voicecoils and magnets but are around 85dB @1Watt but can eat several hundred watts with no problem 👍😀
@audiokeller8490 I looked at Kicker 90s Comp manuals and the 12 usually were 88/89 db. Infinity Kappa were about the same I believe. I dont remember seeing a 10 or 12 be over 90/91. Coils prob 2" with smaller magnets. I seen them equal to a Skar IX now.
Absolutely love the old school amps. Hard to believe that this thing use to drive subs with no issues back in the day….. no need for tons of power to sound loud
Still one of the best looking amps ever made.
That was a great amp back in the 90s! I had that series of amp hooked to my sub and it kick. The brothas tried stealing my car twice to no avail. It finally was sold with my car 16 years later and my car was destroyed in a flood after I sold it a week later.
I remember a dude in AZ back in the day who ran punch 40 and 60 (=100 watts) in IASCA. In the Honda Civic, the 60 ran 7" Focal mids and tweets in front doors and the 40 ran 2 Cerwin Vega 8ohm 10" woofers bridged. The sytem was 2ohm all the way around, but because of the rules at the time (everything rated at 4 ohms), he was making some serious power. That car did really well, within the top 3 if I remember right.
I still have the end caps off that exact same model...loved those landmines.
I remember, back in the 90's i worked part time at this car audio shop in France and we wired a 200DSM to all the speakers we had on the display board (12 pairs) and 2 subwoofers, the shop owner was a genius when it came to build 3 mode crossovers, we had it running for a few hours at a decent volume for a store display room before thermal protection shut it off, the toughest amplifier i have ever seen.
Remember having the puch 60 on a pair of RF 6x9s and Kicker zr240 on pair of 12inch KComps. Great video!
Those things were monsters. Punch 100 with 2xJL10s Bridged. All you would ever need.
Great combo bro!
Holy crap what a cruise down memory lane. It was a 75 on 2 XLC 12""s in an '85 2 door s10 blazer. Set off alot of Cobra alarms back then 😂
I t's really cool to see what kind of power we were working with 90s
I never owned one of these, but did help friends of mine install a few. Great amps!
Had a Punch 200 back in the mid 90’s. Along with a Phoenix Gold 4 channel amp. Installed in. 93 Toyota 4x4 X-Cab Pickup. Awesome Amp’s !
Polk Audio main speakers and 4_10” Soundstream Sub’s in an Isobaric box.
Ah , Phoenix Gold is the brand I was trying to remember yesterday, after watching several of Big D videos lol
So THANKS for providing the answer to my ? 🙏🙏
@@bobcat3653
You’re welcome
I miss all the Made in the USA equipment from back then. The cost per watt might have been a lot higher than it is now but 30+ years later, it's nice to see and hear these bad mo'fos still getting rowdy. I've seen the used prices gradually getting close to original prices of back then for unmolested units. Thanks again for what you shared with us.
This was my first amp that was the rabbit hole into a bad habit of becoming a bass head 😄
Good habit.. :)
hard to belive the dsm series was 30 years ago, thanks for reminding me of my geezer-ness! prolly my favorite content on youtube, you do a great job D 👍👍
I wasn't born yet but I do love these older vintage amps
Love the lower volt testing 👍🏽 Thanks bro.
That's how they used to rate their power
@@dosstheboss100 That’s what’s up 👌🏽
Still have my 200x2 Trans ANA amp😂. She still holding strong every time I plug her in and use her. I just love the old school Rockford amps.
love this - my first car was an old ass accord hatch. had some RF punch 12's and amp - loved it. this took me back. haha thanks!
The his was my childhood dream amps. I had to get them all as a kid. I lived in car audio shop buying these
Thanks for the vid! I had the Punch 40 from this era. Surprising it wouldn't run bridged at 2 ohms; mine ran fine like that.
Mine did too
Still have my Punch 200dsm, and 4040 from back in the day. Great amps! Ran the 200 at 2 ohm mono for years until it finally blew out the ground plane. Had it fixed, and ran it in a few different systems since. It also went into protect if the system voltage hit 15 volts, which some new cars will do on occasion it the battery state of charge gets low.
Boy that thang !!!! You had one of these you was somebody!!!
Man me and all my friends had these. I had a 60 pushing 2 Fosgate 10s in my 83 Datsun pickup.
That’s why these were awesome….twice the rated power
great show my friend, I appreciate the old school stuff. Happy New Year Big D, peace,Brother
Those have a good Industrial look like they will push any speaker. Great review!!
Love the old RF stuff... This is what I grew up. And yes, I've thrown away too many punch end caps :(
It’s almost crazy how much money people from US are willing to pay for a pair of endcaps, i had offers for a pair of Power 250M2 endcaps, highest was 40€ 😂
@@audiokeller1975 I just saw a pair of the "Star Trek" punch caps sell for $250
Great amp and great video 👍👍 These amps aren’t rated 1 Ohm per channel or 2 Ohms mono, but the powercube ratings which were made with 1kHz burst signal 20ms are all printed at the bottom of the original box. These results are also in every manual and features the punch 200 which is a great amplifier 😊 funny fact from 1995: the German sellers here in Hamburg suggested to get the 40,60,100 or 200 for 2 Ohms mono operation 😅😂 that’s why I came in touch with a punch 40ix. At this time I didn’t even know or heard something about Rockford Fosgate because only special shops were allowed to sell them, from this year my first Punch 40ix ( 600 German marks ) was forced to power a 2 Ohms subwoofer for 5 years without a problem 👍
Fosgate, given us more for decades!!!
I love the new test at lower voltage Big D!! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!!!
It was hard as hell to sell Phoenix Gold against these in the 90s, even though the PG were exceptional back then. RF's reputation was bulletproof at that time...
I still have my 1996 40x2 and 60x2. I ran the 60x2 at 2 ohms mono on 2 Punch 12s.
Back in the the day i always got those rockford fosgate amps 2nd or 3rd hand without the end caps lol its kinda rare to see those amps with end caps nowadays lol 😂
Appreciate your work. Thx brother. Happy New Year.
Nice touch with the finishing track🔥🔥👍🏾👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Bad ass my friend …..a lot of technology packed in there . Mesha, Dsm ect…..
Hated those amps when they 1st came out, but the style grew on me, and they had power, and you could cook on them lol
I remember back yr 93 I purchased a few RF amp two pair 200ix an 1 4080ix all RF components an 2 12' RF SSP-124 Power Punch Pro Series ..payed $2,100 very solid amp over-rated power an SQ
Build a custom enclosure on 1964 Vw.. man those my golden days an competition with my next door neighbor he was all into Zapco Competition R.I.P Robert
Punch 60DSM a sweet piece. Not too pricey and stayed cool as a cucumber cranked at ' '4Ohm' stereo. Chassis sink and great efficiency pulled that heat out nicely.
I ran alphasonik back in the day and for the money you got a lot of value I had 2 2x50 for mids and tweeters and 2x150 on two Dr crankenstien 12's sounded great
My friends and I was in love with the punch amps!!
Man you bring back memories
We always suspected the were pushing more than what they said, we used to love the 75 and 150's, those were the sweet spots
I had a RF BD500 mono sub amp . I swear you couldn't kill it , trust me I tortured it and it kept on ticking !
That mid 90s era really was a packaging era, look at how good those Punch amps still look in 2024?
Rapid fire with the vids from Dick Riculous. Thanks as always for all you do.
In the late '90s or early 2000s, I ran two of those powering 2 Savard "rap" 12s. Worked well. Much love big D!!❤
You know Savard is still in business and have a revamped RAP series? You will see them soon on my channel
I bought that very amp in 95 after hearing it at the Nopi national just outside ATL .
My first Fosgate amp! This on two DEI 12s slammed in my Sundance. 🔥🔥
Vintage is priceless ✌️
Nope, old stuff definitely has a price.
Man.....had one of these on 3 Cerwin Vega HED 12s.....talk about pounding lol....shit I'm old😅
RF Masterpiece series🤘😁👍🆙️
Soundquality is great
Power supply is amazing
Durability fantastic
Love me some Rockford fosgate og amps. So much quality and thought put into the amps. My favorite was my bd1000 I had @ 18 had those 6 hx2 subs slappin!
While well made some of this legacy stuff is, it really is impressive how much more efficient anything basically made after 2000 has become.
Request for classic Cerwin Vega Stroker 15” review and testing.
I have 2 of them... 200ix and 4080, love them
I remember when these came out I remember looking at the catalogs.
I had two Rockford Fosgate Power 300 Mosfets with the shroud fans. I always wanted that Power 1000 or that big McIntosh massive one. No need for all that these days.
I had a Punch 40 and Punch 100 back in the day
I love the Rockford equipment of my youth
Love RF. I still use RF AMPs today. I wonder if anyone has used the case to put a modern-day RF AMP into. Love the look of those AMPs!!!
The modern stuff won't fit, but the black and grind series from the late 90s and early 2000s do fit. There really isn't much point in trying to put something newer in an older heat sink, though.
Damn 30 yrs. I remember seeing these in magazines thinking they looked so cool. Always wanted to own some of those. Only ever owned the 99-2002 Punch amps.
There was this one killer install I'll never forget which was a fox body mustang where the owner cut out the floor boards and had these amps liquid cooled under glass in the foot wells. That was right when these DSM amps came out. Would love to see that CAE article again.
Around 1995 or so I had bridged punch 60 at 1.66 ohms (three 10's), took it fine due to box rise, and it slammed hard. Eventually got stolen. Miss that amp.
My very 1st amplifier I owned
i was a car audio installer addicted to PUNCH amps growing up. #losangeles #sanjose #thecarstereocompany #genesisone
Like seeing the old school stuff. I have an old one for you. How about a Pioneer CDX 1 and a Pioneer BP 780 to run it. Still have it and looks brand new. That thing rocked back in the day.
oh man id' love that Pioneer CDX1. I have Sony's first the CDX-R5 brand new in box
lol, I only recognized it when you took the caps off.
Now this is old school to the finest.
I still have one of these lil beasts, cant for the life of me find the end caps though!😢😢
Awesome work! You are champion in your field, truly. Have you ever tested/tried the MB Quartz Discuss amps? I got a pair of them, 50x4 & 125x4 amps, and heard/read a lot of good things about them. These are old amps I got from crutchfield many years ago, but they seem to do a good job running my sub and miss. If you have any interest to use them, let me know. Thanks again & cheers!
A little to early for me. But remember using some punch 200 and 400 for mids and highs late 90’s
They was a beast
This is the content I love
A buddy had a punch 60 on a 10w6 and it sounded so good.
If I could marry a series of amplifiers . . . ❤
Old school at its best here kids!! There were some amazing installs in the early 90s that make use of those end caps. Back then ~200 to a sub was a lot. Curious what are those PCB trim pots for?
Those are for setting the Bias on the Fets. Its kinda like adjusting the idle speed on an engine. The Fets stay idling all the time. Its part of the reason for the poor efficiency of Class A/B amps.
@@JasonWW2000 Oh ok cool.
@@JasonWW2000it’s closer to setting the fuel air ratio…too little or too much is detrimental to the sound quality or the longevity of the amp.
@@envisionelectronicsYes, that works, too. I try to keep it as simple as possible. Adjusting fuel mixture is less likely to be understood compared to adjusting idle speed. Who are we kidding. Teens today don't even know what a carburetor is. Lol
