    Nice work. I remember as a 17 year old playing Tempest a lot when it first came out. It was one of my favorites. So simple, but really challenging.

      Very fun game but like you said gets tough quick. Bring lots of quarters!

      No doubt. I could get to the invisible levels without too many, but that was long ago...

    I would be happy to have that Tempest to play, rough cab and all. It was my favorite game when I was 11. I was pretty good at it.

    I loved the look of the game and maybe played it a time or two. It's not an easy game. If I had the patience I could have been good at it. But I figured why waste my quarters on it if Galaga, Dig Dug or my other fave games were available. Great video as always and this aesthetically is one of the best looking Arcade games of all time.

    Classic game. I always get a cringe when I hear a dry spinner. I always take them apart and lube the shaft. I have repaired several Tempest arcade cabinets, and most often the spinner knob is cracked or missing part of the skirt. I have found good acceptable replacements at Electronic swap meets in the assorted Knob Boxes for around $1 each. Those Pokey chips are difficult to find. A good place to find those is in OLD Atari Computers, like the 400.800 and XL series computers. Best Electronics in California Sells the chips NOS.

    Some of those ROMs and RAMs are super sensitive to ESD, you should wear a ground strap. Otherwise, great work. Love all the troubleshooting and repair videos.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I've never worn a ground strap and never fried a rom or ram because of it, I think maybe the older stuff isn't as susceptible to it...

    Tempest is often a pain in the ass when it goes down especially the vector monitor

  • @rickpontificates3406
    @rickpontificates3406 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Those quadrascan monitors FREQUENTLY fail. Components in the TO-3 drive transistors burn up. Back in the day, they used crappy mica insulators on the drive transistors too.

    How do you test the transistors and diodes?

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a diode test on a multimeter, you put one lead on the base of the transistor and the other lead on one of the outside legs and compare measurements, you're basically looking to see if one is shorted to the base leg.

    Hello there - have you ever experienced "jittery" text on your Tempest? Like, the text wobbles around a bit on the screen? Recently began experiencing this...

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes unfortunately that is very hard to fix. It's pretty common, all of them do it to some extent.... there's about 20 things that can cause it, anything in the analog output of the game PCB can do it, and you can also have filter caps in the monitor doing it, or caps in the deflection board.... it's one of those things you replace about 10 things and it still doesn't fix it. We've got one right now for instance doing it!

      @@LyonsArcade Drat! Mine just started after I popped in the Alan-1 Transistor Upgrade Kit and Deflection Board. It's not terrible, but certainly noticeable. I'm more afraid of one of the original bottle cap transistors blowing again, so I'll stick with it. Bummer that it's a hard issue to fix :/
