  • Taiwanese Steamed Rice Bowl Cakes are a very traditional homestyle snack or light meal. It's made up of plain tasting "rice cakes" which is basically steamed rice paste (rice flour + water) and is usually topped with savory pieces of meat, shiitake mushrooms and salted duck egg yolk. Try my recipe as it's very delicious and full of flavor!

    I don't know that this actually translated as 'rice bowl cake' in taiwanese..here in Indonesia, we call it 'nasi tim' which literally translated as 'steam rice' I really enjoy to eat this when I feel a little bit unwell. Such a comfort food!! And rather than using rice flour, we using rice and make it more sticky than usual

    thats so cool making a meal out rice-cake. mostly i use rice-flower, soy-milk and stirw it over and steam it,(or i use a combi to make it more cake-texture). i gonna try it with chicken, your dish=3

    I always remember this dish in Taiwan (Tainan) as having a very unique and specialized thick sauce that made it taste great. Is it really just soy paste? I'll have to look for that brand.

      anna wong you can also use corn starch, or omit the tapioca powder all together. There's more details on how to tweak this in my recipe blog.

    Hi Angel! I'd love to try this recipe but can I use a 大同電鍋 (tatung) for steaming? If so how many cups of water would you suggest?

    • @angelwongskitchen
      @angelwongskitchen  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      angelano10 Wow, it's funny - I just took my grandparents to get a new steamer and they also got a Tatung. Honestly, I don't use those myself for steaming so I don't know exactly. If I had to guess, I would use a little more than the amount you use to cook rice with (basically enough for 45 minutes of steaming).

    The 普通話 pronunciation of 碗糕 is wangao. So did I get it right that the Taiwanese pronunciation is wanhui? Looks yummy^^

    • @angelwongskitchen
      @angelwongskitchen  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pytaigon Sokon the Taiwanese pronunciation is close. In the beginning of the video I say the name of this dish in Taiwanese.

    Ahh nostalgia! Thanks for this recipe! Can you use regular Flour instead of Rice Flour? I hate buying 1 ingredient for 1 dish >_

    • @TheLittledikkins
      @TheLittledikkins 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can use it as you would use cornstarch for thickening or when you make a flour dredge or batter for deep frying make it with part rice flour for a crisper texture.

  • @buhedwen
    @buhedwen 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sounds like a great dish, but isn't there also a recipe with actual (sticky) rice instead of flour? I think I once had that in a Chinese restaurant, but I might be mistaken.

    • @angelwongskitchen
      @angelwongskitchen  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      expialidocious yes, there's also a sticky rice (similar version) of this as well. Different tastes though.

    • @buhedwen
      @buhedwen 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Since I'm all for healthy eating, I will try the recipe with whole rice rather than flour :)

    Do you know how to cook Teochew ho fun noodle soup? It looks like this: s3-media4.fl.yelpassets.com/bphoto/Cg8di-bT6pkfXptz3CLfrg/o.jpg Would love a recipe if you do. I've been searching for years, but can't seem to find any that has almost the same taste.

      quietasamouse I've never heard of Teochew noodle soup (or maybe I've had it before and just didn't know the name). The ingredients in the photo look familiar though. Is this supposed to be a Taiwanese soup dish?

    I try to make it in home,but my rice pudding collapse😫😫

    • @angelwongskitchen
      @angelwongskitchen  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aphrodite Henderson oh, no! It shouldn't collapse. Did you remember to cook the rice mixture over the stove first? It should be cooked to a thick texture like mashed potatoes, then steam.
