How to REALLY Pray the Rosary

  • Fr. Mark-Mary discusses how to really pray the Rosary and go deeper than the external mechanics. Primarily it’s about relationship and not simply recitation. Fr. Mark-Mary explains three aspects of the Rosary on which we can contemplate:
    The person of Jesus Christ
The words of the prayers, which are Scriptural
The Mysteries, which cover the whole life of Jesus.
There is so much to be found in this beautiful prayer, but its beauty can easily be overlooked. As Pope St. Paul VI said:
“Without contemplation the Rosary is just a body without a soul.”
It does no good to pray the Rosary while your mind and heart are somewhere different. If you’re new to praying the Rosary or have struggled to pray it, maybe just read one of the mysteries in Scripture and pray three Hail Marys. Fall in love with the Rosary little by little if that’s what it takes.
Fr. Mark-Mary is talking about the Rosary all October. Stay tuned for more videos on this powerful prayer.

You'd want to let your big sister and your parents know that detail, Sir, for a matter of honesty and personal virtue... as well as being mature in terms of character at that, so she doesn't lack understanding of where the mysterious emails related to this are coming from... and thus avoiding any fights.

Thank you for this video. Your explanation has helped alot. Years ago I was praying earnestly for something and the vivid thought came to me that I should pray it 50 times. This was before I knew about the rosary. Then, a few days later, someone gave me a rosary and I started learning about it. I've held it in my heart since then as my "go to" place for peace and meditation. As St. Padre Pio says...it is our weapon. Peace and love to you! 💖💖💖

It is difficult to truly pray the rosary without falling into a pattern of repetition but it's true value and meaning can be felt if one slows down and thinks about the words and what they mean. The same is true of the mysteries. For example, when mentioning the Lord suffering when being scoured , picture the blood and scars on his body and the probable expression of pain and anguish on His face. While difficult to contemplate, it gives an appreciation of what the words in the prayer(s) truly mean in depth and thus enriches the experience of the prayers.

Fr Mark-Mary has truly helped me to understand. I have been concerned that I am just saying the prayer and counting how man I have done but I will start looking, reading and trying to understand each mystery. To give meaning to what I am doing and I hope to greatly improve my relationship with the Lord and with Our Lady..

Thank you for posting this! I love the idea of focusing not so much on the recitation and more on reflecting on the prayers and mysteries. I especially like the idea of taking a mystery a day or a week and doing 3 Hail Marys with it. This I think breaks the mold of simply of reciting the rosary and exploring it within. Again, thank you and God Bless!

There's something to be said for rote repetition. Some days, you're just not capable of focusing or meditating. I don't skip the rosary on those days. If all I can manage is "vain repetition," then that's what I do. Perseverance in obedience has its place. It's putting one foot in front of the other. Some days, you can't even do that. So, you do the best you can and hold your ground.

I really struggle with focusing/meditating on each mystery. It's really hard for my mind NOT to wonder and I CAN NOT pray it while I'm doing house work because my mind is EVERYWHERE. I hate this about me. I want to say a good rosary, but it's really hard for me, and since Our Lady asked us for one rosary at Fatima, I'd just like to get ONE good one a day. I do say a daily rosary and I was trying to say all 20 mysteries for a while, but I feel like ONE good one from me is better than 4 where my mind was everywhere.

I disagree with your comments on only praying the Rosary if you do it the right way. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. I started praying the Rosary when I did not even believe in God. I did not even own a Rosary; I used my ten fingers to count the Hail Marys. I had to read all the prayers online because I knew none of them. I wanted to believe in God and the Rosary was something I never tried. I had some good feelings after I said the Rosary, so I kept saying it. After a few months of saying the prayer, I wanted to find out more about God. I started attending mass and eventually joined the Catholic Church. After I joined the church gave me The Secrets of the Rosary book by Louis de Monfront. Then I learned how to say the Rosary the right way. After all these years, I still pray the Rosary.

Unbiblical? The decades of the Rosary contemplates events in the life of Christ. His suffering, birth, resurrection, ascension. The prayers are the OUR FATHER, don't think you object to that, the GLORY BE to the trinity, and the HAIL MARY. The first part of the HAIL MARY is virtually the Bible book of Luke chapter 1.
verse 28, Hail full of grace. The Lord is with you.
verse 42, Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
The second half is asking Mary to pray to Jesus for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. We can and do pray for our loved ones, even the unloved.
I'll take all the help I can get. The Rosary isn't a vain repetition like OHM OHM of Hinduism but centered on our God.

I’m a lifelong Protestant. I didn’t start believing in any sort of offering of prayers to Mary until I had the worst toothache I’ve ever experienced. The worst part of it was that I had a trip planned for my grandmother’s 100th birthday. I couldn’t afford to do both, as my budget was just that tight.
I started saying Hail Marys, and guess what? It almost felt like magic the depth of peace and strength I felt wash over me. I went on the trip, in an intense amount of pain. I also found a way to get the dental work done in a timeframe that actually worked for my needs.
I’m not saying that I say Hail Marys every day or anything, but I definitely have learned a different perspective than the one that I grew up with. It was a really eye opening experience for me, for sure.
I also quite recently started learning how to pray with a rosary. I’m very definitely struggling with the mechanics of it, and I sometimes get the prayers in the wrong order. I try not to overthink it though, and I remember that God cares much more about the intentions of my heart than he does about whether or not I can remember “O My Jesus” every decade.
Poco a poco, voy a llegar!

When I pray the rosary I begin by asking the Holy Spirit to guide me and then I imagine walking with Our Lady through the life of her son. For instance, in the agony of the garden I sit myself down next to our Lord, put my arm around him and try to just be there for him. At the birth of our Lord, I take in all that is going on....the Angel's in Heaven sneaking in a peek....and so on. I let the Holy Spirit and the Blessed reveal to me whatever they want me to see. Sometimes you don't want to leave a particular event. It becomes a real encounter with God. It reminds me of when I was young and sat next to my grandmother. We would look through the pictures and she would tell me stories of each picture and the people in them. Some times she would focus on a different aspect of the picture. Hope this helps anyone trying to go deeper. God bless.

We have the Teachings given to us since the beginning of our Lord’s ministry over 2020 years ago, whereas in the 1500’s, along comes Martin Luther, who decided he knew more than God, and removed 6 Books from the Bible. Consider it like an apple, whole and perfect; then take 6 bites out of it, and it is no longer whole, but missing a large piece and is no longer whole. Luther took away all Dogma’s, Traditions, the devotion to the Blessed Mother, and the Saints, etc and now where are the Protestants? 35,000+ offshoots of this “protest” of His Faith and counting. I’m going to try to move toward praying all three sets if mysteries each day.
I feel compelled to try to memorize the prayers in Latin also.
This has got to work. I really want to not offend Our Lord so much.

Any person who tells you that as soon as they start praying the rosary or any prayer for that matter can immediately focus on God and maintain that without difficulty is lying to you. There will be times when you catch yourself focused on other things during prayer thats fine dont think that just because you were a little distracted that you failed to pray. Simply during these times ask you angel or Jesus or Mary to help you focus and meditate on the mysteries.

Theropod gamer some people also say that even if you don’t stop sinning to keep on praying it.
A friend of mine who is Catholic said that even if you sin, keep praying the rosary. This is war. I’m serious. This is war.
I have had days where I just hide though the day, elevated above sin, but then I fail on another day.

Tom Jenkins yes Mary is human and a woman. She is also the Mother of Jesus who is God, the spouse of the Holy Spirit ( since she conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit) and the beloved daughter of God the Father. Jesus could have come into the world without the help of a mere human but God the Father in his infinite wisdom chose a mere woman to be part of human salvation. Pretty amazing I would say, chosen by God the Father himself. And Jesus on the cross gave her to us when he said to John the apostle “ behold your Mother”. John represents all of us. The Blessed Mother is our spiritual Mother since Jesus is our brother.

Tom, don't know where you get your information, but for the record, we do not worship Mary, we worship God. But we do honor Mary, blessed mother of God. Use a dictionary & look up the meaning of worship & the meaning of honor. This may give you some clarity. As well we do not worship statues, another misconception of many non Catholics. Mary is the true mother of God, because Jesus lived in her body till birth, it is correct to say she IS not only the Immaculate conception, but also the Holy Temple of God!!! Please help yourself by learning more about Mary, Mother of God & you will be well on your way to appreciating what God gave us, his Holy Mother. Read Elizabeth's greeting when Mary came to visit her. In God's divine plan He gave us Mary. Ignoring this gift is to ignore God's gift to mankind.

St. Teresa of Avila mentioned in her autobiography that for 40 years she was not able to pray unless she would read some 'spiritual writings' before-hand! Think of it like weightlifting or training if you are a novice or just really getting serious about prayer of course you can't be expected outside of the grace of God to pray 3 complete Rosary in a day or 45 decades like St. Padre Pio.
Start with praying 1 decade every single day for 1 week then add a decade every week after to that after 5 weeks you are praying 5 decades in a day. Then do the same another 5 weeks going up to 10, and then to 15.

I started to have a devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus since this March 2019, I bought early last year the prayer book but I didn’t pray, I put only in the shelf beside the statue of our Lady of Lourdes that I have in my little altar. One night last year I had a dreamt that I was kneeling, clasping my hand praying to the Blessed Virgin Mary and suddenly man appeared in Mary’s side, I look up fixedly to him but he didn’t say anything, when I woke up in the morning I knew that it was Jesus who appeared in my dreamt. Every day I tried to remember which pictures of Jesus that has a similarity in my dreamt, finally I find it the answer, it was the Novena of the Sacred of Jesus picture, so I started this year to have a devotion to The Sacred Heart of Jesus. I think God He reminds me not just to put in the shelf the prayer book but to pray to his Sacred Heart.

I'm all for Rosary, I pray it a lot, yet meditation WHILE saying Hail Mary is very difficult most of the time, thoughts wander; but I do know the mysteries themselves, Ido love my Bible, so I ask you Father Mark-Mary - why not just meditate/contemplate the life of Jesus and Mary, without the beads, without the "distraction" of Hail Marys -and say the latter, reverently separately, for instance AFTER the meditation. What to do? Btw, I love prayer, and meditation, I can do that if not distracted longer than 15 minutes. What would God like better in a situation like mine?

There are rosary 'scripts' (or whatever the right word is) that include Sacred Scripture applicable to each mystery, so it ends up being a reading of Scripture followed by a decade, and on to the next. I think that is effective way for beginners to go. But at some point the mystery and prayers combine together like music and lyrics.

@Craig Martis I understand perfectly. I read about the Rosary, I read sth of St. L de Montfort too, and I dedicated myself to Mary as well. I'm trying hard; I'm even a member of the Brotherhood of the Rosary here in my country. But, the two main ways of meditating while praying are inaccessible to me mostly. I have a strange but scientifically documented (I haven't invented this) medical/neurological problem - I don't visualise pictures - it happens spontaneously, but rarely. Memories are there, but blurry abd kinda gray; dreams are "normal" - no way to compare though. It's called aphantasia. All I can do is think with words, and that works in praying the Rosary sometimes, but it's words against words, two sets of words simultaneously, so... it's only Grace whenever a decade is accompanied by some ligths or a memory (like from the film "Passion" - powerful! and I also look at pictures representing mysteries, that helps, or say Hail Mary slow enough to think words in between like "not mine, but Thy Will be done Father" and it's like it's intertwining with the main vocal stream. I'll never be able to do it like Father Mark suggests, hence my question... I won't give up my Rosary though, not because it's so not fit for me. It's one of the reasons to do it and try harder, because God rewards the effort, not the results as He said to st. Faustina. Which doesn't mean one can just babble the Hail Marys without trying to do it right, just getting through with it - I agree with father Mark, that this would be rather harmful to a person. Last but not least, I try to know the Bible better, so I can memorize verses and then they jump out at me during Rosary, like the example above, and that's my meditation (plus before or after, cause I like thinking about God so much, I do it anyway).

I recently completed the 6 first Saturday devotion Our lady asked us to fulfil at Fatima. She asked us to accompany her and meditate on the mysteries for 20 min. Was difficult at first, but when you go through them, really delving deep, reflecting on the details, it is truly moving. I cried a few times thinking of Our Lords passion, and really feeling compassion, and sorrow for my sins. Thinking how humble, yet powerful the story of our salvation played out. And how the mysteries can be, and are present to us now. Significant and relevant to each and every one of us. Because the story is for your sake, and mine.

At the end of the day when I'm completely wiped out, this time with Mary and Jesus is so precious to me. There are times when I alternate a decade with the Divine Mercy Chaplet and some days I can only get through one decade. I do what I can do, and try not to feel guilty about it. This video is timely as I realize I am doing the right thing. If I force myself to just "get through" it I never feel the peace and calmness like I do when I take my time and truly think about the words and visualize the mysteries. I am going to add looking up the Scripture as well, that was a great tip. Thanks very much Father Mark

    Matthew 6:6-13 KJVS
[6] But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. [7] But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do : for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. [8] Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. [9] After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. [10] Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. [11] Give us this day our daily bread. [12] And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. [13] And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

I'm new to the family, and when i first started praying rosary i got no idea what it was about! I just recited until i learned the prayers, then i started asking our Lady, how to pray deeper how should i do this. Then what i started doing is imagining in my mind that i am with our Lady during each mystery and that i am seeing our Lord through her eyes and asking her to pray for me, to grow in my prayer life and asking her to pray for my family/friends/the departed ones/my diocese/the whole world then i would recite 10 Hail Mary's etc. It takes me a little longer to do the whole Rosary, but it so much worth it. I love just sitting there and having a mental prayer/conversation with our Holy Mother. Anyways, hope this is helpful for someone. 🙏❤️

I have to kind of respectfully disagree. At least through my experience, praying the full rosary everyday even when I thought I couldn't Or new my mind would wander is a gift from God. Just saying those holy words have made me fall much more in love with the gospel and our Lord Jesus Christ.
