most of my best experiences while backpacking the world are usually the one's that are most miserable at the time.... and give you the most interesting stories to tell - hurricane in Cuba, Salmonella in Bolivia, bloody Monday in Peru, burning protest & being shot at in Guatemala, attempted robbery in Ecuador etc etc
As someone who just did a hike this weekend and know the struggle of racing against the fall of darkness, I really hope you find that Bothy soon. But mate! The way you've packed gives me anxiety, this is almost the worst case scenario I'd show to my scouts before hikes. Don't have stuff dangling outside the pack, especially not your sleeping bag!
@@tangerinetango for one thing, it increases the risk of having a wet sleeping bag at the end of the day. Not a good feeling. The other big thing is that it's more annoying to walk when you have all sort of random stuff going this and that way on your back. It gets heavier as well, the further away from you back it is. So to summarize: keep you sleeping bag safely in your pack and keep everything else also tightly packed as close to your back as possible for the best experience. ☺️
Don't go into the hills without bringing waterproofed paper OS maps with your routes planned out. That's what my dad taught me. Phones can be shity and even gps's sometimes crash. what annoys me - i dunno if its the same in Scotland, but in the old days in England, public footpaths were taken care of.. signs kept in good condition, farmers were told to keep the paths clear... nowadays i walk around and there are no signs often... styles are rotten, if u get lost and go off the path farmers come up to you on quad bikes and threaten to shoot you (when its their fault there are no signs and they grew crops over the footpath)... a lot of footpaths i go on now are often overgrown. its seems like there is almost a policy by government and rich people to make sure people eventually no longer have the rights to walk on these footpaths

A theory as to why you were hearing voices could be that because you are in a dark woods and a strange environment your brain will create noises and sounds and visions in order to keep you alive and alert. Probably something that stems from our evolution when we were walking in different places to stop us getting killed by predators and keep us alive. It’s the same as when you sleep in a hotel it’s normal to not have a very good sleep because your brain knows it’s in a different environment and wants to keep you alert. Also it’s the same as people seeing “ghosts” and hearing noises when in a “haunted house” especially if it’s dark your brain will try to create images to help you manoeuvre around because you cannot see anything. Same as if you walked around your own house pitch black you would know where the furniture roughly is and can sort of vision it in your head even though you’re in complete darkness. Just a thought, could be horseshit.
Hope you made it man! Been in this sort of situation before on the highest mountain in Bulgaria, never made it to the bothy, slept under an emergency shelter, temperature dropped to -2 and nearly died. Great story though
It's not the remotest pub in the world Spending 43 years in the merchant marine gave me the opportunity to complete the triathalon, the worlds remotest, the worlds most northerly and the worlds most southerly pubs The worlds remotest is the Albatross Bar in Tristan da Cunha mid way between Africa and South America and 2,400 miles from the nearest civilisation. The island has a population of about 260 and the 'capital' or settlement is called Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. You get a good pint in the Albatross and the bar is surprisingly busy considering the only contact with the outside world is a supply ship every 2 - 3 months The most northerly was in Svalbard or Spitsbergen in the Arctic circle and there was no shortage of ice to put in your dram The most southerly was at a club in the American Antarctic base at McMurdo which offered a fair selection but you could also get a carry out in the base supermarket I managed to get kicked out into the snow for being drunk and disorderly but that was par for the course for merchant seamen Great times
