Thanks a bunch for your videos. I'm a 44 year old 7 hour student that has waited my whole life to pursue my dream. I can honestly say you have been a major influence in my decision. Keep up the great work!
What an honour to receive such a comment! It is rewarding to hear that I may have had even a small part in helping you get started pursuing your dream to fly!
Awesome videos, keep them coming! I recently soloed on my sixteenth birthday in August and I'm about to start my solo cross countries now. I cannot wait until I turn seventeen and can get my PPL. One day I hope to get my tail wheel endorsement, it looks like a ton of fun!
bubble canopy makes it look like a Japanese car.... nice vid, thanks, brakes would be great if they were not on the same side as the throttle, with the brake lever half way they come on with the appropriate pedal if set up correctly.
Did all this Easter 1963 & raced E-Type Jaguars along the M1 from Elstree Aerodrome & then did eight point hesitation rolls for Victory under the tutelage of Andy Pankhurst!
You uploaded this video on my 241st bday. Keep up the good work! And Semper Fi & happy bday to my fellow Marine Corps brothers. For today thanks for all that served.
Everyone asking about "the line" - thanks so much for engaging - I did not expect that many :P but I failed to realize that many people have their TH-cam account settings such that I am not able to send a PM - please use the contact form at FlightChops dot com
FlightChops do you have a second channel? Because you always say "stay tuned for a full series on that" but I don't see that much coming from this channel just curious, huge fan of your videos and the quality of your work life long fan here:)
+Noah Farrell - hey Noah - I publish a new video every second Friday, and we are nearing 100 episodes now... But I don't release multi part series all in a row... So what I do for ongoing related content is make play lists on the channel home page, and add the related episodes as they are competed. There is a playlist for my original "tail wheel conversion training" that has to be near a dozen episodes... And the "mountain flying training" series that has about 8 episodes! There is also one for the WWII warbird / Stearman training that is about 6 episodes. And this episode is the 3rd in the DHC -1 Chipmunk Series that will likely get to 6-8 episodes when we cover formation and aerobatics... You've inspired me to make that play list now with the first three Chipmunk episodes that are already published.
Hi Steve, just started to fly the Chipmunk for my tail wheel conversion. It's an amazing plane and totally understand the juggling of controls :) Great video thankyou
+projekt89130 - thanks! Did you get to the end of the series? I still need to publish the latest, but I am now signed off to fly formation with these guys!
Thanks! And I love your stuff by the way - I think you did alright focusing your energy where you did - I am a jack of all trades, thus a master of none.
Thanks Flight Chops. You do a great job on your videos. I like to think of myself as a Swiss Army knife when it comes to flying. I did leave one off that list, Rigid airship. All gone before my time but, it must have been a magnificent experience standing on the flight deck of one of those graceful ships. Unless of course, a small storm popped up and snapped it in two. Then, I'd rather just stay home and watch flying videos on youtube.
Was enjoying all the super cub footage when I stumbled across the video discussing the prop strike :( I am curious how the repairs are going, and if she will be airworthy again!? Thanks!
+BuzzedPancake - thanks - yes, it was a sad time... We lost almost 2 whole seasons with that plane, but the good news is she should be flying next spring!
Great video and cool airplane. Love your videos. I'm feeling the inspiration to get my license and at age 64 I'm wondering whether I should really do it. My dad was a pilot and tried to get me to learn while I was in college. Wish I had now.
"That was *&$%*# greasy." That was my grandad's favorite term for a smooth landing. It being given on your first landing in the aircraft is a huge compliment, you would've made a great ace back in the day.
can't help it.....I'm reminded of the song... Put your right hand in Your right hand out Your right hand in And shake it all about You do the hokey pokey And you turn yourself around Just bought an RC Spitfire and practiced 3 point landings this morning. You really have to stay ahead of the aircraft with the rudder on the take offs and landings, especially since the main wheels are so close together. I had to abort one take off - I throttled up too fast and did not get enough right rudder to offset the natural pull to the left - she was headed toward the safety fence so I shut her down and started over. Once she is in the air she flies like a dream.
So many questions. Did we see a spoiler at 1:00? How does one go from regular, weekend-warrior pilot to "I have a real chance of flying a Spitfire and do all sorts of awesome stuff along the way"-pilot? (Well, we know, because somebody helpfully documented it all ;) ) Can I receive private messages on youtube? What is "THE LINE"?
Awesome stuff! Thanks a lot. Is the bubble canopy an after-market modification? I remember seeing some Chipmunks at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, and they had a more old-style canopy with several struts and rectangular side windows.
On the first landing, after you mentioned having to make it to the displaced threshold, he said you were OK to land there...Are the rules regarding displaced thresholds different in Canada (from the US)? Can you actually land before them or did I miss some context?
There is no legal issue with landing in the displaced threshold. This is my home airport, and I know that surface is in excellent condition and the approach path is suitable for the chipmunk to land in the displaced threshold. It's not something I would encourage on unknown runways, or at night. For reference, here's what transport canada has to say on it. From the Transport Canada AIM: "When the portion of the runway before the displaced threshold is marked with displaced threshold arrows (see AGA 5.4.1), it is permissible to use that portion of the runway for taxiing, for takeoff and for the landing roll-out from the opposite direction. In addition, this displaced portion of the runway may be used for landing; however, it is the pilot’s responsibility to ensure that the descent path can be safely adjusted to clear all obstacles. "
What did your instructor say about the last landing? Something about rear wheel first is for the pros? When I did training on the Falke, I was taught rear-wheel first from the beginning. What's your take on 3-point vs. wheels first vs. rear wheel first?
I said "exiting on alpha, that's only for the pros" - really a comment in jest, it's just the first taxiway on Runway 12 indicating a very short landing.
Beautiful video, once more. Thanks, Steve, for uploading. I can't help but join the masses in wondering what that 'line' was about. You tired of PMing people, yet? ;) Cheers!
Haha - YES! I didn't think that through - But what I am more tired of is my failure to realize that most people do not have their accounts set up to allow PM - yours included :P - please email me - flightchops at gmail dot com. It is cool that so many people are watching right to the end though :)
Such a shame that ALL pilots do not have the opportunity to learn how to handle landings, especially crosswinds in a tail dragger. There are subtleties, which if properly taught and learned will increase confidence in their abilities. Which will build a solid base for a lifetime of safe flying.
Thanks a bunch for your videos. I'm a 44 year old 7 hour student that has waited my whole life to pursue my dream. I can honestly say you have been a major influence in my decision. Keep up the great work!

Good job! Work hard, you'll get your license!

That thing is a handful.
Take care,
Be safe

Love that multi angle shot of the approach. Great video!
I really like seeing the approaches and landings from the field. As always a very interesting and fun video!!

Awesome flying! great to see you achieving your goal in the Chipmunk
Hi Steve, just started to fly the Chipmunk for my tail wheel conversion. It's an amazing plane and totally understand the juggling of controls :) Great video thankyou
Great to hear!
Loved the OG Chipmunk vid. Another great one. Keep doing great!
Thanks!
Thoroughly enjoying watching your progress in this and all your other adventures. Keep it up! Excellent job!
+projekt89130 - thanks! Did you get to the end of the series? I still need to publish the latest, but I am now signed off to fly formation with these guys!
FlightChops Not yet - have been working my way forward from your first video. Almost there :)
Excellent flying and excellent video production. I'm so jealous of all the things you get to do!
+americanflyyer - thanks! Glad you enjoyed it, I am happy to share the experiences.
Steve it was great to meet you today at AvWorld. Keep up the great work and thanks for the swag.
+UPS1000 thanks for coming to the event! Great to meet you as well!
Love the videos...Such an inspiration for all of us... Thanks.
very awesome
Amazing videos Steve! You've inspired me to learn how to fly!
Right on!
Nice! Making it look easy!
Looks like a lot of fun. One of my biggest aviation regrets is never getting tailwheel qualified... or glider or seaplane or lighter than air.
Thanks! And I love your stuff by the way - I think you did alright focusing your energy where you did - I am a jack of all trades, thus a master of none.

Glad you enjoyed riding along :)

Ron, the chief pilot of the CH2A is still flying everything in the fleet at 86 years old. If you can pass a medical, you can fly - get on it! :)
"That was *&$%*# greasy." That was my grandad's favorite term for a smooth landing. It being given on your first landing in the aircraft is a huge compliment, you would've made a great ace back in the day.
that is a beautiful plane
agreed :)

Your trainer was AWESOME! "you're not over-speeding the flaps so I don't hate you yet..."
Nice work mate!
Thanks!
Steve! Great video! I'll email about the line. But I have to know where you found an instrumental version of Brisbane Nights. Love that song!
Just catching up on comment replies - I think I remember, we sorted this song thing out over email yeah?
FlightChops That we did, my friend. You're the best for being so diligent with your fans! Thanks dude!

Canadian Chipmunks have the bubble canopy. British Chipmunks do not.

Whats the line Steve? Also, great content, very inspirational to all aviators young and old. Gotta get myself in a chipmunk someday!

Now I've got to ask; what's "the line"?

That plane seems like a blast to fly.
