- In this video, we explore a unique residential design by Kawakubo Tomoyasu Architects & Associates, located in the heart of Taito City, Japan. Situated on a narrow lot with just 3.3 meters frontage, this innovative house maximizes its limited space while fostering a sense of community. The design cleverly extends the narrow alley into the home’s first floor, creating a seamless connection between the private residence and the vibrant neighborhood.
Inside, the house features a ladder-like staircase that not only links the dining and kitchen areas on the second floor to the private rooms on the third floor but also serves as a light well, bringing natural light into the interior. This staircase enhances the home’s soft air circulation system, ensuring a comfortable thermal environment year-round.
Despite the tight space and local building regulations, the architects successfully optimized the floor area using a lightweight steel frame and fireproof materials. The result is a bright, efficient, and welcoming space that blends seamlessly into its urban surroundings. Join us as we delve into the thoughtful design and intelligent use of space in this modern Taito City home.
