My fishing mentors always said, "The wind is your friend." and like all friends, ya' gotta' get to know your friends and they do piss ya' off once in awhile...tight lines, God bless.
On any of the clear water water supply lakes i fish in my area wind is key. When the wind starts blowing i head to the banks where the stained water is blending with the clear. Or where I know the wind is hitting certain funnel areas or points. I used to hate the wind now i hope to luck into it and go find my spots. Thank you for the great under water videos. They have changed my thought process and helped me catch better quality more often.
As a bank angler I went from hating the wind, especially when forced to cast into it, to loving it, especially when casting in to it. Wind Storm hitting and chasing everyone off the lake has consistently been when a skunk session suddenly turns into a dozen fish. You even start getting large Walleye which us bank fisherman almost never catch in the larger bodies of water
It is amazing how fast things can turn around with using the wind. Like you said, from nothing to a dozen so quick. That has to be fun catching the walleye too!
That's a really great look at how wind affects bass! It's amazing what you can learn and how much you can improve your fishing just by watching what goes on in the water!
There was a pile of prey in that spot. I couldn't believe it when I dropped the camera down there. I don't even know how many thousands of panfish there must have been.
The best bass tips TH-cam channel out there. Thank you for all the top-notch tips. I've always been told about fishing the wind-driven bank in the early springtime but haven't really thought about its benefits all year. It sucks fishing from the bank on the windy days but if you adapt, it's well worth it. Thanks, Steve!
Very interesting .... I always hear how wind effects current, but you actually show how it really works ! Thanks so much for sharing your "10 MPH" guidelines .
Very good subject to talk about Steve. It enlightened me about the wind and how to fish it way better than before. So just checking the weather for my next tournament and 3 days prior it's in a different each day
This also opened my eyes Steve. I think it was you that told us Bass like to chase bait fish and bluegills that is what makes crankbaits so good. Because when they are moving along fast they cant turn on a dime. Now it makes sense to me. Notice your video has bait such as bluegills co existing in same water swimming slow. If one would to take off he might be run down. Also note same scenario it seems bass know bluegills moving slow but bass were hunting crayfish as seen nose down in grass. 💡 In other words it appears to me that moment in time bass were on prowl looking to eat. We all seen before a bass lazy cruising bank a sign in active in my mind. When they swimming about in your video they were looking down for crayfish i believe. Easy pickens. If the bait got real active( sudden moves) i feel bass would react. Im firm believer bass are calorie conscious
I did notice that in there. They were definitely looking down. It so interesting to watch and I totally agree with you - the different, out of the ordinary movement can get them to strike.
over 50 years fishing and while I have heard and followed the leeward shore idea for much of it, but I never once thought of how long it takes the plankton to stack up let alone how long it could take for fish to follow it.. This Three day thinking is great Steve. TY yet again!
@@SteveRogersOutdoors I can’t stand the wind in general lol even if I’m not fishing, but your right that 10mph is the goldilocks zone for sure. Great video keep it up
I like fishing the banks were the wind has muddied up the water. I mainly fish a clear lake, and in the summer time, it kind of gives the fish a little cover. Just last week I got a 3lber on a wind driven bank in a laydown! The wind is my friend...most of the time! Great video Steve!
I love the water rise! I have been catching love the video all my fish in faster water this summer, I don’t know if it’s water temperature or what but it’s been really hot so maybe it’s because of the oxygen depletion ? The water is super warm in the Delaware. I also have had very little success with power fishing, it’s all finesse for me, I have one Jackhammer fish in July? It seems they’re not chasing bait. The water is very low and Gin clear. Awesome stuff Jeff ! Thanks! Ps I never get sick of fishing! Lol😂
Love that the first lake you highlighted was one that's spitting distance from me. I live by Lake Minnetonka - Lake Waconia is 20 minutes away from me.
My best day this year was on a day the wind was blowing so hard there were white caps on the waves. Tossing a keitech from the shore with a 3/8th berkley swimbait head. I was only out because I wanted to see how my new Curado 200 DC would handle the wind. Tossed directly in to the wind and not a single backlash with fluorocarbon on. It sold me on a DC reel. I hooked in to multiple 3+ lb smallies, which is pretty big for the area up north. They were all up in 8 feet of water chasing bait fish off a point.
Wow, great content Steve! I now have a calendar plan for upcoming fishing excursions with the local weather channel, or doing it myself for current days, but looking at the forecast before heading out! Appreciate all your timely dedication!
Here's the thing. Depending on the forage and body of water, it can both help and hurt it. Here in Georgia, usually windy points on blueback herring and shad lakes are awesome in the wind. Lakes and ponds without either forage, it can be VERY tough going with the wind.
The wind-blown areas will always position bass and are always worth fishing assuming you can present your lures properly (and maintain your boat position if you fish from a boat.) Even if you’re fishing a protected area NEAR the a wind-blown area, the wind is still what is positioning those fish. I love pond fishing on the windy side while watching people on the calm side struggling. I’m happy to deal with the “annoyance” to catch more fish. And I do. 😎
I fish in all conditions Only problem wind gives me is affecting how my braid ends up laying on the cover when I frog fish and ends up in a half moon shape taking my frog away from my targeted structure or if Im fishing parallel to cattails or a shoreline with overhanging limbs the wind can and does blow my line to the cover Sometimes it happens also when I have to fish a strong dead cross wind and my hard bait wont end up passing close to my high percentage targets most likely to hold bass becausey line is blown off course But other than that I always used wind to my advantage
Steve, I fish from an island that has 40% of the area deep enough to fish. I need the wind to be from the South, Southeast or East to be able to reach where the fish are. So, I cannot fish when the wind is from the SW, NW, N or Northeast directions. Thanks for the 10 MPH thing though. If the wind is from one of my preferred directions I guess the fish will be on the leeward side, basically right in front of me?
I hate fishing in the wind, but then I'm retired and can pick my days, and I'm a topwater surface strike junkie. Love those calm evenings, especially at the tail end of a high pressure system.
when i meet a fisherman that does not like wind, they are almost always weekend angler types that fish 2 or 3 baits and they just fish the same spots and rely on a little luck. anyone that takes their bass fishing seriously wants to have wind blowing while they are fishing.
That is a terrific question. The most difficult situation I run across is when the wind is blowing hard back against the current. Then things can be a mess. Cross wind works pretty well with the current, but if the river you are fishing has a nice strong current, that will be the most dominant factor with wind being secondary.

Ah, well this explains why the deep dive app looked so similar when I pulled it up after watching this video.

Lol well said

That is great to hear. Thank you!
Keep the great videos coming. As i angler who mostly fishes from the bank. I always head to the shoreline where the wind is blowing.
So if the wind is blowing from west to east, you fish on the eastern bank, where the wind is pushing the fish? I’m new to fishing and learning.
As a bank angler I went from hating the wind, especially when forced to cast into it, to loving it, especially when casting in to it. THIS IS WHAT I ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW THANK YOU FOR THE GEEAT INFO I WILL USEW IT.
Awesome! Thanks!
I did not know the bass would stick around that long after the wind was gone. Thumbs Up ! 👍

It can be very tough from the bank for sure. Hopefully, it will push them to you though. Thank you for watching!

Thanks! The 10mph mark has definitely been a good rule of thumb lately.
Very good subject to talk about Steve. It enlightened me about the wind and how to fish it way better than before. So just checking the weather for my next tournament and 3 days prior it's in a different each day
Yes sir. Also boat posistion, sometimes have to cast into wind gives your bait natural presence of bait fish blowing to the bass do to wind
Man, going back the previous few days for wind patterns is smart. never thought about that.
I always learn something new when I watch your videos. Thank you!
Another good video. One of the very few channels worth watching.
Wow, thanks!
Good reminder for something that’s often overlooked 👍
It is something that I do overlook too often. Thank you for watching!
Killing it again! Love your content.
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to watch.
Same for sea run trout in Sweden 👍
This is the best bass fishing resource on TH-cam 💯
Agreed.
I appreciate that!

Hey, Steve, great to see ya and pray you are well. Great info! Be safe
Hi Shannon! Great to hear from you. The week is off to a great start and I pray your’s is as well.
Steve, excellent work once again!
Thanks again!
I HATE fishing when it’s wind but the lake I live but is tough when there’s no wind so I’ve learned to love it lol
It is for sure a love/hate thing. I have the same thing here. The wind is by far better for me.
@@SteveRogersOutdoors I can’t stand the wind in general lol even if I’m not fishing, but your right that 10mph is the goldilocks zone for sure. Great video keep it up

Thanks! I like the wind too until I get over confident with my baitcaster - and then you know what happens. Lol.
Great tip! Well thought out and explained. Subscribed.
Awesome, thank you!

Love it. Good ol Waconia. Caught my PB out there years ago. Great fishery.
It really is a great lake. Just love going there.
Thank you for all the informative videos. A lot of info with your videos great stuff.
Glad you like them!
Great video and information. The truth. Glad to have ya in the fishing community 👍👍😎✌️🎣🎣 Happy Fishing
Much appreciated!
Love that the first lake you highlighted was one that's spitting distance from me. I live by Lake Minnetonka - Lake Waconia is 20 minutes away from me.
I love fishing in MN. An incredible state. Those two lakes are really fun to fish!
As a sea Angler the wind is very important to me.
Here on my home lake, St. Clair , the wind is very prevalent for consistent bites...👍🎣
That is a tremendous lake. I love fishing it, but have definitely encountered some serious wind out there.
My best day this year was on a day the wind was blowing so hard there were white caps on the waves. Tossing a keitech from the shore with a 3/8th berkley swimbait head. 10 mph seems to be as calm as it ever gets here in SD lol... living here has forced me to fish in the wind.. geeat video
That is definitely some wide open terrain you have there. An absolutely beautiful state though!
Lake Wiconia! There's some nice Muskie in that lake. Try bell lake if you want some nice bass and walleye. Miss fishing those lakes
I will have to. Thank you!
Thanks a lot. I always have heard about this as a gosssip. First graphic evidence of it . Very nice video. Thanks.
Glad you liked it

Definitely when those bites happen it helps deal with the wind a little more. Lol. And like you said, it’s often areas you may have to yourself.
Great video Steve, good to keep the wind in mind, I have that same 10mph threshold
Excellent! You have lots of great ways to fish in and around the wind on your lakes. Lots of cuts and turns.
Hey Steve, great video and I have started using the Deep Dive app as well. I really like the wind direction map.
The wind direction portion is something I really love because it is so easy to check the previous couple of days.
spinnerbait will keep the friendship alive
I fish in all conditions

That big loop in the line is a challenge for sure.
You read my mind again! I was just wondering this the last time I went out and it was glass calm out.
It is super hard on those calm days for sure. I also love the wind helps hide us a bit too.
Very good video. Thank you from Spain.
Thanks for watching!

Those calm evenings are so much fun. A great time to be outdoors. And of course a great topwater blowup is a perfect way to wrap up the day.

Another killer video Steve...
Thanks!
That was GREAT!
Thanks!
Man, my lake is usually windy as heck and often whitecapping. The wind changes directions pretty often too.
The changing direction can definitely make it challenging.
❤
When the wind completely changes directions, that’s when Mary Poppins shows up as well.
Love it!
Would this work for long line trolling for crappie
That is a great question. I would sure think so and would definitely try it.
👍👍👍👍👍
As long as it’s not over 15mph I’ll fish in the wind.
Does wind have this effect on rivers etc with current?
That is a terrific question. The most difficult situation I run across is when the wind is blowing hard back against the current. Then things can be a mess. Cross wind works pretty well with the current, but if the river you are fishing has a nice strong current, that will be the most dominant factor with wind being secondary.
