I see myself in the way you sheepishly over-explain your choices and preferences. Thank you for sharing such a lovely recipe. You have a natural ability to make things beautiful and appealing. Kudos to you for adding in those potatoes and kicking away the doubt. You will never regret being courageous and I for one appreciate what you do in your own perfect style. 💛
You know what? I have been watching your videos the last few weeks and think that you are such a fun-loving, kind and delightful person. Your family and friends are so very lucky to have you in their lives. ❤️😃
I make egg-tata-roni salad with equal parts diced hardboiled eggs, diced cooked potatoes, and cooked pasta. Any shape pasta works as long as it is about the same size as the dices. You can add veggies like mushrooms, celery, peppers, and onion and your favorite mayo, dressing, or vinaigrette. It makes a perfect lite summer lunch or brunch, especially when served in a large hollowed out tomato on a lettuce leaf.
I wasn't going to try this because I'm an egg salad purist and it didn't appeal to me but...when you spoke so tenderly to your sandwich with the words, "you complete me" you captured my heart. I will DEFINITELY be trying your version WITH that bread.
Did you try the bread and immediately chuck it in the bin, lol? Tried different Scandinavian brick breads and don't like them at all. Now a Scandinavian crisp bread...that's a different story. Love them for everything.
After boiling the eggs for hard boiled I run cold water into the pot and gently crunch eggs against the side of the sink. Than under the the cold running water I remove the shell.
@@monemetal01 I learned in cooking class the vinegar "talks" to the chemistry in the egg white and tells it to stay in place when a shell has a crack! : ) So when you remove the lid you don't have a scary large blob of egg white seeping out. Here's an odd thing, If you add vinegar to the water used to boil brown eggs something really freaky happens...the brown peels off! And it gives you the impression they were painted! Or actually skinned. It is a very delicate coating. Also FRESH eggs are most difficult to peel. You want 10 day or older eggs that are releasing/loosening from the shell before you cook them. And yet most run out and get the freshest eggs they can before boiling. Plan ahead and you will never have a hard peel again. ; ) Be well my friend!~
This!! ^^ I’ve always done this and it never fails me! Also make sure to use older eggs. Newer eggs are harder to peel. The vinegar trick helps too. And I recently heard if you take a thumb tack and push it in the bottom of your egg to make a tiny hole, that it helps make sure the eggs don’t crack and explode. Hope it helps !
"Without all the mayo" was the reason I clicked on this recipe, yet he was still generous with the mayo... Adding herbs is right up my street, nice twist.
Tbh, it may look like a lot but that really wasn't much mayo. The majority of people I know that have made egg salad add wayyy more, like a whole cup in total, not my type of salad lol. If you still need to take the mayo content down, get all of the boiled egg yolks and mash them together with less mayo in a bowl, then add that to the rest of the salad and it should still turn out pretty thick and nice
Absolutely! Use a teaspoon while they are cracked a little and under cold water. Slide the spoon slowly under the shell to let water in to break the “seal” of the shell. It should slide right off.
Pumpernickel is my family’s second favorite bread (after rye)! I hard cook my eggs via sous vide and always add relish/pickles/green olives to my egg salad along with shallots and celery. Love fresh dill too! You rock John.

I just made this for brunch, so creamy, crunchy and delicious. Thank you for your recipe. Stay safe and be well, John! Love from Saigon, Vietnam 🥰
I knew right from the start that this was not going to be a recipe I would make (I am very traditional when it comes to my egg salad - lol), but I still watched the video all the way through, twice, because I love John! He is so down to earth, warm and funny, he is just a joy to watch in the kitchen. This recipe is interesting though and if one day I am ever feeling particularly daring, who knows? I might just break down and put a few potatoes and apples in my egg salad. ;)
My father is German so I grew up with pumpernickel and rye bread and love them both. I bought pumpernickel bread yesterday so that I can finally make this recipe and eat it the way you did. I cannot wait to try it and I know it's going to be fabulous.
It is dependent on the freshness of the eggs. The newer the egg the harder it will be to peel. Also keep in the eggs in the pot and shock them under running cold water. Drain out the water and shake them in the pot top break up the shells and the shells should slide off easily.
Adding 2 big tablespoons of salt to the water before turning on the water to boil allows the shells to slip off easily even if you forget an it them in the cold water afterwards.
This is my first video from you and I just wanted to say that you have a super relaxing attitude and give off such a calming energy. And the recipe looks delicious
John, make sure your eggs aren't "fresh". Use ones that you have had for at least a week in your fridge....ice bath after cooking makes for an easy peel.
I started making my boiled eggs in my instant pot. I follow the directions, transfer them with tongs to cold water and crack all of them and put them back in the cold water a few seconds. They peel perfectly. I think the instant pot pressure makes the egg separate from the shell a bit more. Plus I like the texture of the egg more from the instant pot. There more soft...not as rubbery. They come out perfect every time too.
Just a tip for easy peeling eggs. My mother in law gave me this tip year's ago and so far, it's worked perfectly. She adds 1 tablesppon and 1 tablespoon of salt into cold water. Add eggs into cold water, brings eggs to hard boil. Take them off and let them set for 10 minutes. Secret is, add unpeeled eggs into bowl of ice water and begin peeling. Mine has always peeled perfecty with this method. Your recipe is totaly different than anything I've tried. Can't wait to make this, looks delicious. Thanks for the video John.
Hi John! I adore your channel. Thanks for all the great recipes and tips. Here’s my tip for perfect, easy to peel eggs: -Bring the water to a boil. Make sure there’s enough water to cover the eggs you are boiling. -Gently add the eggs in one by one. (Keep eggs in the fridge until you add them to the pot. I use a slotted spoon to lower them individually into the boiling water). -Boil eggs for 11 minutes. -Remove from heat and dunk eggs in ice cold water. -Let sit for a couple minutes, then peel. They peel perfectly every time. Been doing this for years and there’s only been two or three times when my eggs got stuck to the shell. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Lovely! The fresh dill is one of my favorites also, even added to a green salad it adds such a great dash of fresh flavor. The egg dilemma is one that I have conquered 3 ways. I put some vinegar in the water when I boil it, And putting into an ice bath immediately upon taking it out of the boiling water separates the membrane from the shell. Rolling it before peeling makes the shell come off in a sheet instead of large unbreakable parts that take egg with it. The onion dicing is easiest if you keep the end on with the little hairs intact. Then slice into the onion both ways holding onto it, length side and crosswise, then end by putting the knife through as you dice it falls apart. At the end just cut up to where you can to and leave the last piece of off to save for soup or bone broth. Love the bread, especially the sunflower flavor that you can get at Trader Joe's/ Aldi, etc. BTW, did you know that Trader Joe's and Aldi are owned by brothers? One went with the more trendy upscale branding and the other split off and went the Aldi route offering high quality but without all the frills attached. Anyways, thanks for sharing. Loved the recipe. I have always used apples in my "Auntie Anne's Potato Salad", but had never tried it in my egg salad. AWESOME flavor! I am a disabled woman who has had to learn life from a wheelchair for the past 10 years. It's been both devistating and challenging, but cooking has helped me feel like I can still accomplish something. Thanks again for the fun shows! They give me hope.

For those of us who like a smaller dice on the eggs, I use one of those little metal egg slicers, put the egg into the well on the base, slice down once, then rotate the egg 90 degrees, and slice once more. Time-saver with less drudgery. I like to use dill, and also a dash or two of thyme. P.S. I, too, am a pumpernickel lover . . the heartiness and texture really stand out!
I made this today for lunch for my family. Everyone loved it! Especially the dill and apple ❤️ thank you! Forever my go to egg salad recipe from now on
I put my eggs in ice water as soon as I take them off the stove. Then once I’m ready to peel, I lightly smash an egg on the counter and roll it back and forth under my palm until all sides of the egg have been crunched up. Shell should come right off! Sometimes in one or two big pieces, but easily either way.
I love Pumpernickel too. I make a garden sandwich with shaved carrots, cucumber, tomato, brick cheese, mixed greens, and vinaigrette. So refreshing on a hot summer day.
Never liked egg salad or potato salad, but this salad was amazing. The apple and those buttery potatoes were a game changer. I sprinkled my egg salad toast with some bacon. It was so good. This recipe is definitely a keeper.
I never had the potatoes in egg salad but will definitely try it. My friend has made a chicken salad similarly with potatoes in it and I must say it was quite delicious. Can’t wait to try this recipe. I just know it is going to be yummy!
To peel hard boiled eggs easily use old eggs. Like ones that have been in the fridge for two weeks. After they're boiled rinse them with cold water till they're cool. Peel off a little then use a plastic spoon to get under the shell and slide off the rest of the shell. Then good luck. Sometimes it seems whatever you do -- they just don't want to peel off cleanly! Love your recipe for egg salad. All I put in mine is mayonnaise and dill. Such a fresh taste. I also use the pumpernickel bread for my egg salad recipes. Love it!
Oops -- I forgot. I start with eggs in cold water -- completely submerged in the water -- then when they come to a boil turn off the burner and clamp a lid on the pot and time for 12 to 14 minutes -- depending on the size of the egg. They come out perfect every time. Be sure and crack them all over before peeling.
Yes good recipe John, and yes I have had the bread, it is a European thing, and I thoroughly enjoy open-faced sandwiches on a hearty bread!!! Keep up the good work Ontario, Canada!
I tap eggs on the counter and then roll them with my hand, using just enough force to crack the shell into small pieces. The shell is then easy to peel.
Oh, my goodness, when I saw the pumpernickel bread I almost screamed! I too enjoy that bread. I love it for cream cheese, cucumber and dill, open face sannies. Egg salad will be my next addition to the rotation. Thanks!!
Hello from France. I cook eggs in my pressure cooker. Use the steaming rack and add water just up to the rack.....water shouldn't touch the eggs. Cooking: When the cooker starts to shhhhh, put your timer for 6 minutes. After the 6, put hot eggs in cold water and peel right away. For softboiled eggs, cook for 4 mins. This method renders *perfectly* cooked eggs that are *EASY* to peel every time. Bonne journée
Un profesor me enseñó a pasar los huevos por agua con hielo y recién pelarlos, para evitar que la cáscara se pegue al menos. Me encanta la ensalada de huevo y esta versión se ve deliciosa!
John I am a fan of that bread too! Delish, And if someone hasn't already suggested it, try peeling hard boiled eggs under cold running water (into a collander), saves rinsing in the end and pretty much helps gently ease the shells off! Give it a try.
Ahaha! 😄 Can't wait to see you in Cut The Core Away From The Flesh. 😂🤣😄 John, you're a riot. Yeah, you just do you. 😄 Definitely egg salad with some extras. The sandwich bread looked great. Pepperidge farms makes a nice pumpernickel. ❤👍
@PreppyKitchen: I really enjoyed your video. Re: Boiling eggs- What has always worked for me is you boil the eggs after you've had them 5-7 days. Fresh eggs never peel easily. I boil only 6 at a time because I'm single. Add 1teas distilled vinegar to the water. This is in case one of your eggs has a crack. It keeps the egg from flowing out into the water. Then slow boil the eggs for 10min. Turn the heat off & allow them to sit 10min more. Then put the pot in your sink & turn the cold water on them for few minutes until they cool down. Take your eggs out & refrigerate them. After an hour or so take them out & peel. When you peel start in the middle of the egg not the ends. With this method you'll not be frustrated nor disappointed! Good luck and thank you for sharing. The potato tip is great. I smash potatoes for potato salad but never thought of doing it for egg salad. 🖒
My father was a chef and he taught me an interesting trick he learned from his instructor at CIA; gently roll the hardboiled egg with your palm against your counter (the same way you would with a lemon or lime), until the shell is crumbly and it should fall right off. Of course, that is if you use salt to boil your eggs, the salt reacts to the shell and allows it to peel. Hope it helps!
Thank you so much for the recipe. I made it last night and didn't expect much, but it's probably the most delicious egg salad I've tried so far ( I haven't tried many 😅) It's really good. Highly recommend to everyone who's still doubting ou there😊
Love your videos. I just did egg salad and deviled eggs for 50. Easy way to boil eggs, and I also do not take them that far done, more like 8 minutes. Put all your eggs back in the pot with some, not a lot, of water. Cover with lid. Now shake the heck out of them, but don't go nuts, just enough to break the shells. Now easily peel them, under running water can also help.
John, an easy way to peel an egg- take a small spoon, turn it over, and run the nose (put a crack in the shell first) between the shell and the egg. The contour of the spoon fits nicely with the shape of the egg and edge of the spoon does a great job lifting the shell off.
Lazy Sunday - binging on your videos - love the potatoes in your egg salad... If I get up off the couch today, I'm going to make your English Tea Sandwiches with your current egg salad recipe (apples, shallots, and celery but I think no potatoes for the sandwiches). YUM! Thanks for your great videos!
Your egg salad recipe is amazing. I would never have thought of adding apples and potatoes in the egg salad. I am going to try this recipe. By the way if you cook your eggs in the instant pot the shells come off so easy.
@@skyllooo07 Yup, same here. Especially with small kids or pets around, sudden stumbles are a thing. Easier to sharpen a dull blade than get stitches for a wound.
This is wonderful. The potatoes and apple are great. I then tried them in chicken salad. Yum. Tuna salad, skipped the apple; adding potatoes is great. I steam the eggs and potatoes; they’re easy to peel that way.
I made this recipe last night, and it was totally delicious. Amazing how that apple kicked it up a notch. I was looking for a new egg salad recipe because for years now I've been making Bobby Flay's Smoked Paprika Egg Salad, which is delicious, but I just wanted a new taste and this really was good. A nice change of pace. Sometimes I make egg salad with Honey-Mustard dressing which is also a recipe. Really like the apple, gives it a nice crunch and just a bit of sweetness. Very good.
i peel eggs great. after they are boiled i put them in cold water not for very long tbh. as long as you’d like at least 2 minutes. then i crack then with the back of a spoon and use my finger gently to make an opening then i use the spoon to go around and it’s super easy!
Tip for the egg peeling; right after they’re done boiling, place the eggs into a separate bowl of ice water or really really cold water for at least 5 minutes. The sooner you take the eggs and start peeling however, the eggs will just be really hot so I like to let them sit in the ice water for 15+ minutes so I can handle them better when they’re peeled! The shock of the ice water right after they’ve been boiled does something to make the eggs easier to peel idk lol but it works!
Just made this, and it was so good, introduced me to fresh dill, amazing flavor! The combination was perfect. Tried two tips for the eggs that worked really good, I rolled the eggs on the table and used a teaspoon to help me remove the shell.
I love pumpernickel too! In Germany our pumpernickel is almost black and it's so delicious! You should try this recipe of one of my favorite german chefs: Pumpernickel topped with (a liberal amount of) butter, a hash brown (german hash browns are called Reibeplätzchen or Reibekuchen) and a drizzle of sugar beet syrup :) If you happen to have a PO box for fanpost, i would love to send you the key ingredients (the pumpernickel and syrup)
Hey John, here is a suggestion for shelling eggs. What I do is a combo of hacks that are out there. First is I crack both top and bottom of the egg, then somewhat crack the egg on its side a bit firm and then roll it away from me on it side and I'm able to peel away the shell well. I do rinse them in water as you do for the little shell that may remain. As for your recipe here I really like it I like it that it's light and flavorful I love fill too 🙂 and it kind of reminds me of potato salad that a lot of people make that they add Apple to it and egg like many Latinos in my family do it. I love that brick bread. Thanks for sharing the recipe and I hope you enjoyed your picnic today! ♥️🙂

Keep up the good work
Ontario, Canada!
My mom always used a pastry blender to cut the eggs. And she always added relish. The fresh dill sounds amazing!
Thanks!!
Looks delicious! I'm from Holland and we call that bread 'Roggebrood'. So good! :-D
Delish,
And if someone hasn't already suggested it, try peeling hard boiled eggs under cold running water (into a collander), saves rinsing in the end and pretty much helps gently ease the shells off! Give it a try.
Ahaha! 😄 Can't wait to see you in Cut The Core Away From The Flesh. 😂🤣😄 John, you're a riot. Yeah, you just do you. 😄
Definitely egg salad with some extras. The sandwich bread looked great. Pepperidge farms makes a nice pumpernickel. ❤👍
I made this for lunch and it turned out delicious specially the addition of dill and apple gave it 👌. Thanks.
Add a pinch of salt when boiling the eggs or a teaspoon of vinegar.
Also you can shock the eggs with cold tap water.it helps.
Just made your egg salad recipe and will never go back! It was amazing, delicious, layers of flavor and crunch. Thank you for this!!!

I don't like egg salad but I enjoyed this video 💕.
Watches both PewDiePie and Preppy kitchen
My brain: Chop chop
My father was a chef and he taught me an interesting trick he learned from his instructor at CIA; gently roll the hardboiled egg with your palm against your counter (the same way you would with a lemon or lime), until the shell is crumbly and it should fall right off. Of course, that is if you use salt to boil your eggs, the salt reacts to the shell and allows it to peel. Hope it helps!
Ohhhh he quoted a scene from Jane Austen’s adaptation “Pride and prejudice” 💕💕💕
Thank you so much for the recipe. I made it last night and didn't expect much, but it's probably the most delicious egg salad I've tried so far ( I haven't tried many 😅)
It's really good. Highly recommend to everyone who's still doubting ou there😊
Pumpernickel is my favorite bread. I do not like egg salad, however yours sounds good.
Adding the potatos and apples looks wonderful. Got to try this.
Pumpernikel and eggs? You can't go wrong with that
Love your videos.
I'm sorry, but you are a good looking cook! Love watching your recipes!
@Laurie P we can still appreciate 😍😉
Yes. I already knew this! He still looks good! ;)
Why apologize for his huzzzband's blessing?
John, an easy way to peel an egg- take a small spoon, turn it over, and run the nose (put a crack in the shell first) between the shell and the egg. The contour of the spoon fits nicely with the shape of the egg and edge of the spoon does a great job lifting the shell off.
In denmark most of us eat pumpernikel/ Rye bread every day.
It's so good!
Love pumpernickel bread and rye bread....yum!
This is the first vid I came across that used apples in a egg salad... curious to try. Seems like a more healthy choice. TY!
Sammy's World::: I think he used miniature potatoes that are known for a 'creamy texture'.
I'm not preoccupied with healthy or so called healthy choices. Taste is the key factor.
Partner must be so happy.
I love his vegetable garden!
Om gosh. John! Never scrape your cutting board with the sharp side of your knife! It is a sure way to dull immediately!
Dirt Road Dini sacrilegious, lol 😂
Your egg salad recipe is amazing. I would never have thought of adding apples and potatoes in the egg salad. I am going to try this recipe. By the way if you cook your eggs in the instant pot the shells come off so easy.
Yikes with the knife scraping! Turn it over and scrape with the dull side.
PutterBeard i use the sharpe side to scrape stuff too... maybe people just prefer it sometimes
@@skyllooo07 Yup, same here. Especially with small kids or pets around, sudden stumbles are a thing. Easier to sharpen a dull blade than get stitches for a wound.
Best practice would be to use a metal bench scraper then you don't risk a dull knife OR injury.
I just hated the sound
How ignorant is not ypur kitchen😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This is wonderful. The potatoes and apple are great. I then tried them in chicken salad. Yum. Tuna salad, skipped the apple; adding potatoes is great. I steam the eggs and potatoes; they’re easy to peel that way.
Please make a video on how to make CINNAMON ROLLS!!!!
I made this recipe last night, and it was totally delicious. Amazing how that apple kicked it up a notch. I was looking for a new egg salad recipe because for years now I've been making Bobby
Flay's Smoked Paprika Egg Salad, which is delicious, but I just wanted a new taste and this really was good. A nice change of pace. Sometimes I make egg salad with Honey-Mustard dressing which is also a recipe. Really like the apple, gives it a nice crunch and just a bit of sweetness.
Very good.
you should poke each egg with a needle at the bottom to make the eggs peel easily before boiling. This will prevent them from cracking as well
I try this with and without potatoes and is delicious. My family and friends enjoyed it very much. Thank you 🙏
If you add a little bit of white vinegar while you are boiling your eggs, they will peel like a dream!
really?? thanks!!
I need to try this! ☺️
@@PreppyKitchen Another thing that helps is to gently crack the bottom and top of the egg and then roll the rounded sides across a flat surface.
Next time I boil eggs I'm going to try this tip. Thank you!
I used to think this was a "hoax" "old wives tale" and recently tried it. OMG made all the difference!
i peel eggs great. after they are boiled i put them in cold water not for very long tbh. as long as you’d like at least 2 minutes. then i crack then with the back of a spoon and use my finger gently to make an opening then i use the spoon to go around and it’s super easy!
"as you can imagine I get tapped pretty hard..." and then the save "for the food stuff" ;)
😄
Love that pumpernickel bread being Swedish 😄 and with your egg salad it’ll be the best ever!
Yeah, cucumber, if by cucumber you mean celery...😉
Tip for the egg peeling; right after they’re done boiling, place the eggs into a separate bowl of ice water or really really cold water for at least 5 minutes. The sooner you take the eggs and start peeling however, the eggs will just be really hot so I like to let them sit in the ice water for 15+ minutes so I can handle them better when they’re peeled! The shock of the ice water right after they’ve been boiled does something to make the eggs easier to peel idk lol but it works!
Works for me every time! 👍
Pumpernickel is a German bread 😂
It’s the sweeter version of our Schwarzbrot (Black bread)
Just made this, and it was so good, introduced me to fresh dill, amazing flavor! The combination was perfect. Tried two tips for the eggs that worked really good, I rolled the eggs on the table and used a teaspoon to help me remove the shell.
Title says “Without all the Mayo”. Why are you adding mayo then??
Because it has less mayo. It's pretty simple. The key word here is "all". There's still some.
I love your videos John. Your humor and positive attitude makes my day. I grew up eating pumpernickel bread in NJ.
show us your husband!!
I love pumpernickel too! In Germany our pumpernickel is almost black and it's so delicious! You should try this recipe of one of my favorite german chefs: Pumpernickel topped with (a liberal amount of) butter, a hash brown (german hash browns are called Reibeplätzchen or Reibekuchen) and a drizzle of sugar beet syrup :)
If you happen to have a PO box for fanpost, i would love to send you the key ingredients (the pumpernickel and syrup)
My moms from Germany and it’s her favorite bread. I get it for her every time she comes to visit.
Pressured cooked eggs peel like a dream. Love your video!
Love pumpernickel bread !! Dang, I am going to try your recipe as I also love egg salad!!!! YUM
